The 1788 state capitol designed by Thomas Jefferson stands a few blocks north of the Richbrau Brewing Co.

A few blocks south runs a 1785 canal championed by George Washington.

And down the cobblestone street in the historic Shockoe Slip neighborhood sits the birthplace of American freedom of religion

In the middle of it all, Richbrau's owner Mike Byrne makes his own beer and serves hamburgers.

"Cities need to take advantage of their historic backgrounds," he said. "We have wonderful history. That's why I'm here."

Tom Lemon, principal planner for the Toledo-Lucas County Planning Commission, said the city needs to build on its past. "We have a collection of buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century. They portray kind of a different period in history," he said. "It's a pretty neat example of architecture."

Right now if I need to print something out or scan a document I need to switch the usb cords currently connected to my computer. Truth is, I need a USB hub. But why get any old boring USB hub when you can buy one that is in the form of R2D2 or Darth Vader? The good news is that George Lucas is releasing Darth Vader and R2D2 shaped USB hubs later this month for $66. The bad news is you’ll have to import them. Click the photo above to enlarge. Baseless Indiana Jones 5 Speculation! Bonus: Penis!

At the Cannes film festival this weekend, when asked about the possibility of doing a 5th installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, George Lucas replied that he’d first have to come up with “an object for Indiana to seek.” That he made no mention at all to the rapid deterioration of Harrison Ford’s face suggests to me that Lucas is already planning on replacing Ford entirely with digital technology, if not some elaborate scheme involving a ruse and a carbonite chamber.

Anyways, seeing as Lucas is probably a fan of this blog (hey, if it’s good enough for you…), I’ve decided to use my advanced knowledge of mythology and Wikipedia to compile a list of likely MacGuffin’s for Indy to chase after the fifth time around:

CHARLESTON — Edward Gibson had just received his wings in the early 1940s when he returned to his hometown of Charleston on leave and ended up in a military police lock-up.

Gibson’s crime was that none of the military police had seen a black man dressed as he was: an aviation cadet and part of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first group of black fighter pilots allowed into the U.S. Army Air Corps.

“They said I was impersonating something; they didn’t know what it was,” Gibson said recently.

Gibson, 86, and Earl Adams, 87, a Tuskegee Airman in North Myrtle Beach, said they hope to see the group’s achievements abroad and how they were treated at home portrayed as realistically as possible.

Gibson and Adams spent time training in both Tuskegee, Ala., the home of the first “experiments” to see if blacks could fly airplanes, and Walterboro, which also was a site where hundreds of airmen were trained, but it doesn’t get the same recognition.

George Lucas Testifies in Washington D.C. -- Yes, Really!

On Tuesday, George Lucas testified before the House subcommittee on telecommunications and the Internet. His intentions were really very admirable, as he was arguing in favor of reforming the universal service fund, which provides Internet and telephone access in rural, low-income, and high cost areas of the country. Lucas is passionate about education reform, and he testified in favor of making Internet access "a digital civil right," that is free to schools and libraries.

While he refused to answer Examiner's query as to whether President Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney was more like Darth Vader, he was happy to compare Barack Obama to a Jedi Knight. "I would say that's reasonably obvious." Forget Internet for schools and low-income areas; this was the quote heard around the Internet, and derided for its sincerity. And it is very obvious. Everyone knows Obama is strong in the Force, a Jedi Knight like his father before him.

Luís Salvador Gnoato, arquiteto (UFPR, 1977), doutor em arquitetura (USP, 2002), diretor adjunto de pós-graduação em arquitetura e urbanismo, PUCPR

Blade Runner, com o título em português Caçador de Androídes, dirigido por Ridley Scott, foi um cult-movie dos anos 1980. Sua música, composta por Vangelis ex-integrante da banda Aphodite's Child, autor de outras trilhas sonoras, como Chariots of Fire, fez o mesmo sucesso do filme, mas o uso de instrumentos eletrônicos, característicos de sua década, fez com que esta trilha sonora, embora de excelente qualidade, ficasse um pouco datada.

Baseado em romance homônimo, o filme, embora não contasse com o aparato de altíssima tecnologia de seus contemporâneos Steven Spilberg e George Lucas, tem execução técnica que nada deixa a desejar.

George Lucas has created legendary film heroes like Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones, but the US director says that in real life, his hero is Barack Obama.

Lucas was in Japan on Wednesday to promote his latest film, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” as Obama clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.

“We have a hero in the making back in the United States today because we have a new candidate for president of the United States, Barack Obama,” Lucas said when asked who his childhood heroes were.

Obama, ”for all of us that have dreams and hope, is a hero,” Lucas said.

Indiana Jones is back - and on form

Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford's dashing hero, was infamously named after George Lucas's pet dog. And there were rumours that the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - the fourth movie of the film franchise - was the runt of the litter.

The film suffers slightly from the mumbo-jumbo plot device of that titular Crystal Skull, but it was always thus.

Every Indiana Jones movie has what creator and co-writer George Lucas calls a "MacGuffin" - a mystical artefact that the intrepid archaeologist has to track down - be it the holy grail or a sankara stone.

This time, Jones is on the trail of a skull that must be returned to a lost city in the Amazon which is guarded by the undead.

It is a load of old nonsense, of course, but the journey is worth the price of admission.

Farm Bill Passes U.S. House With Enough Votes to Override Veto

May 14 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. House of Representatives passed a five-year, $289 billion farm bill with enough votes to override a presidential veto, making it more likely the measure will become law.

The plan to boost food aid for the poor and keep U.S. farm subsidies largely intact was approved 318-106 in the House, more than the 289 votes needed to override a veto threatened yesterday by President George W. Bush. The president said the plan exceeds spending guidelines, distorts trade and subsidizes farmers as crop prices reach records.

``Half a loaf is better than no loaf,'' said Representative Frank Lucas, a Republican who said he opposed many provisions of the bill and voted for it because it improves farm programs for his rural Oklahoma district.
