Italian Court Delivers Damning Verdict on CIA Renditions

A court in Milan has delivered its verdict in the spectacular trial of several CIA agents involved in the 2003 kidnapping of the Islamist Abu Omar. Some 23 American agents received prison terms after being found guilty in absentia. The court's decision is a condemnation of the anti-terror policies of George W. Bush.

In the world's first trial involving the CIA's "extraordinary renditions" program since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a court in the Italian city of Milan delivered a clear verdict. A total of 23 US agents were convicted in abstentia and sentenced to prison terms over their role in the 2003 kidnapping of the Islamist Abu Omar.

Twenty-two of the Americans were given five year terms while the former Milan CIA station chief Robert Lady was sentenced to eight years in prison. Three US citizens were acquitted, with reference to their diplomatic immunity.

There won't be a "death match" between former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush after all.

The New York Post reports that the event, originally scheduled for Feb. 25 at Radio City Music Hall, has been canceled because it was being touted as "death match faceoff."

"This event ... was supposed to be a discussion between the two former presidents, and has been canceled because it was not being billed as such by an overeager promoter," Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna told the Post. He said the event was actually intended to be a moderated panel discussion rather than a debate, as part of a series pairing liberal and conservative thinkers called "Minds That Move The World."

LIKE his mate George W. Bush, John Howard has become the target for an angry shoe thrower.

The airborne attack left the former prime minister unhurt - but severely embarrassed by the "pathetic" throwing abilities of young Australians.

Last Friday Mr Howard was about to address students at England's Cambridge University when a lone heckler, an Australian student, started berating him.

"He was obviously going to have a go. He started calling me a racist and all that stuff," Mr Howard said. The heckler said he had been "ashamed to be an Australian for that entire time" of Mr Howard's 11 years in office.

The 300 other students in the audience didn't join in and started booing the heckler.

The man took off a shoe and threw it at Mr Howard. Well, in his general direction at least.

"It was a pathetic throw. He would never have been in my team," Mr Howard said.
