A high-fat, high-sugar diet does more than pump calories into your body. It also alters the composition of bacteria in your intestines, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it, research in mice suggests. And the changeover can happen in as little as 24 hours, according to a report Wednesday in the new journal Science Translational Medicine.

Many factors play a role in the propensity to gain weight, including genetics, physical activity and the environment, as well as food choices. But a growing body of evidence, much of it accumulated by Dr. Jeffrey I. Gordon of Washington University in St. Louis, shows that bacteria in the gut also play a key role.

An Italian court has cut the sentence given to a convicted murderer by a year because he has genes linked to violent behaviour — the first time that behavioural genetics has affected a sentence passed by a European court. But researchers contacted by Nature have questioned whether the decision was based on sound science.

Abdelmalek Bayout, an Algerian citizen who has lived in Italy since 1993, admitted in 2007 to stabbing and killing Walter Felipe Novoa Perez on 10 March. Perez, a Colombian living in Italy, had, according to Bayout's testimony, insulted him over the kohl eye make-up the Algerian was wearing. Bayout, a Muslim, claims he wore the make-up for religious reasons.

While many genetic studies have examined alcoholism among adults, identifying genes that are associated with alcohol misuse during youth is equally important, given that genetic and environmental influences on alcoholism vary across development. New findings show an association between a polymorphism of the µ-opioid receptor (OPRM1) gene and alcohol misuse among adolescents.

"But the relative importance of environmental and genetic factors appears to shift considerably over the course of adolescence," Miranda Jr. added, "with genetics playing an important role once teenagers begin to drink. Although family and twin studies can disentangle genetic and environmental influences, they cannot identify the specific genes that confer risk for alcoholism in youth. Our goal was to test if and how the OPRM1 gene, which was previously shown to be associated with alcoholism in adults, is associated with alcohol misuse among adolescents."

The researchers found that most people in countries widely described as collectivist have a specific mutation within a gene regulating the transport of serotonin, a neurochemical known to profoundly affect mood.

In China and other east Asian nations, for example, up to 80 percent of the population carry this so-called "short" allele, or variant, of a stretch of DNA known as 5-HTTLPR.

Earlier research has shown the S allele to be strongly linked with a range of negative emotions, including anxiety and depression.

Critically, it is also associated with the impulse to stay out of harm's way.

By contrast, in countries of European origin that prize self-expression and the pursuit of individual over group goals, the long or "L" allele dominates, with only 40 percent of people carrying the "S" variant.

Researchers found that older men were more likely to have the benign tumours, known as spermocytic seminomas, which although harmless on their own, potentially passed on genetic mutations to their sperm, thereby increasing the chances of their offspring have health problems including autism or schizophrenia.

Professor Andrew Wilkie, from Oxford University, who led the study published in the journal Nature Genetics, said clumps of tumour-producing cells form in the testicular tissue which then produced the "germ cells".

In recent times there have been major advancements in what is known about the causes of aging and how to help stop and prevent aging. I want to learn all I can about this subject and eventually obtain a position where I can truly help advance this field of research. I am unsure of whether genetics, biology, medicine etc etc would be best to major in for college. It seems like there is so much to it that it’s hard to determine what the best path to take really is! Hopefully I can obtain a response from someone more educated than I on this.
