peek and poke from BASIC are only an replacement for the missing pointers like in C.

With Basic4GL pointers you can do the same job from peek and poke.

There is an old saying that you should be careful what you wish for, since you might get it. I think NOW should think twice about trying to win this lawsuit. If they win, wouldn't that endanger the innumerable government-funded programs that benefit only women?
More to the point, how many proofs do we need that NOW and similar organizations oppose fathers' involvement with their children and will use any excuse to attack programs that encourage such involvement? And here I thought they believed in gender equality–silly me.

When I was a little girl, I remember feeling very guilty for wanting the things that boys wanted - erector sets, modeling sets, mechanical sets etc. I felt guilty and shameful for wanting those things instead of being happy with the dolls and more “feminine” toys that I was given. I was so terribly unhappy though, even angry to see my male peers treated so differently.

Do you consider yourself a feminist, and if so, what does that mean to you, and what role do you think it plays in your comedy?

Yes, I’m a feminist. It is an extension of my lifelong war against pantyhose.

To me it means that as women we are individuals before we are gendered people and that we’re not defined by our gender except in the ways we chose to appropriate that definition.

We’re in a weird generation, right? Our Moms were forced to grapple with that definition more immediately, and I think it’s changed as we’ve grown up. The core issue "how do I fight bias against me because of my gender" is still there but has gotten more complicated and wrapped into all kinds of identity issues about how you present yourself as a woman and I pretty much think it's your choice and fuck pantyhose. So, hence my answer above.

I think all comedians bring their experience and perspective to comment on the world and I am a woman, so that gets involved.

And not just any sport - extreme sports! Women's role in contemporary society is an ongoing debate as more and more women take part in the workforce. After all, making a career for women is just as important as for men. At this point I stand on the Model B side of Talcott Parsons' views of gender roles, i.e. total disintegration of roles. All housework should be done by both parties in equal shares.

The results of the survey, going back an average of 17 years in 52 countries and involving 350,000 people, will be published in the July 2008 issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. Researchers have asked the same two questions over the years: "Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy?" And, "All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?"

They speculate reasons for the sunny outlooks include societal shifts in recent decades: Low-income countries such as India and China have experienced unprecedented rates of economic growth; dozens of medium-income countries have democratized; and there has been a sharp rise of gender equality and tolerance of ethnic minorities and gays and lesbians in developed societies.

"The results clearly show that the happiest societies are those that allow people the freedom to choose how to live their lives," Inglehart said.

Facebook to Users: Let's Cut Grammatical Errors

NEW YORK -- The online hangout Facebook is getting more serious about grammar. No more should users see jarringly incorrect declarations such as "Debbie changed their profile picture."

Users who haven't specified their gender in their Facebook profiles will be asked to do so in the coming weeks. That way, Facebook doesn't have to default to "their" or the made-up word "themself," as it had been doing.

While not knowing someone's gender poses grammatical challenges in English, it has created even larger headaches as Facebook expands to other languages, where a gender-neutral option isn't available in plural form.

"People who haven't selected what sex they are frequently get defaulted to the wrong sex entirely," Naomi Gleit, a Facebook product manager, wrote Friday in a company blog.

This isn't the first time Facebook, one of the world's most popular social-networking sites with some 80 million users worldwide, has had to confront grammar.

As Canadian immgration chiefs seek to attract Britons fed up with the cost of living here, it has been revealed that Denmark could be a better option for those looking for a fresh start.

'Though by no means the happiest country in the world, from a global perspective the United States looks pretty good,' Inglehart said. 'The country is not only prosperous; it ranks relatively high in gender equality, tolerance of ethnic and social diversity and has high levels of political freedom.'

The survey, first done in 1981, has kept to two simple questions:

'Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy?' And, 'All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?'

Writing in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, Ingelhart's team said they have surveyed 350,000 people.

The annual Conference Board of Canada report card measuring quality of life among 17 advanced countries released Monday concludes that Canada is like a student who started out strong, but is coasting toward the bottom of the class.

Canada's economy was the envy of the world in the 1970s, ranking third. Now it has fallen to 11th place, behind leader Ireland. And on a per capita basis, individuals in the United States, which ranks seventh, earn $6,400 a year more on average than Canadians.

For instance, Canada has 17 times the rate of assaults, seven times as many burglaries and three times as many homicides as Denmark.

But even more surprising is that the United States, which is last in the society category, still has fewer burglaries, a lower suicide rate and greater gender equity than Canada.

Canada could successfully address other social challenges to sustain future quality of life,"

Private LaVena Johnson's nose was broken, teeth were loose, one eye was concave and there were abrasions over her body. The supposed M-16 hole to the head was far too small for the revolver-sized exit wound, and was on the wrong side of her skull for a right-handed woman to have pulled the trigger. Her genital area showed evidence of acid, perhaps used to destroy DNA evidence. She had white military gloves glued to her burned hands.

Since then, the Army has continued to insist that the LaVena committed suicide by pointing her rifle with her non-dominant hand at the side of her head and set herself on fire, all after she beat herself up and poured acid on her genitals (since their was no apparent investigation into whatever happened there). Oh, and there was a trail of blood leading away from the tent where her body was found.

Facebook 'gender policy' has grammar in mind

A blog post from Facebook product manager Naomi Gleit early on Friday announced an update to the site that initially may seem extremely minor: after years of using the grammatically abhorrent reflexive pronoun "themself" to describe actions in members' activity feeds (i.e. "Dwight Schrute tagged themself in the album 'Booze Cruise '08'"), the social network will be using the proper "himself" and "herself" instead.

"We've gotten feedback from translators and users in other countries that translations wind up being too confusing when people have not specified a sex on their profiles," according to Gleit's post. "People who haven't selected what sex they are frequently get defaulted to the wrong sex entirely in Mini-Feed stories."
