Saturnian trifecta: The planet, its rings and a moon

On November 8, the Cassini spacecraft snapped this photo of Rhea, Saturn's second largest moon, against a backdrop of the gas giant planet and its famed rings. The spacecraft has returned countless striking images since it arrived at Saturn in 2004, but it continues to carry out exploratory science as well.

Less than a week before this snapshot was taken, Cassini plunged through a misty plume spewing from the south pole of Enceladus, another Saturnian moon. During that November 2 flyby, designed to gather data about the mysterious plume's composition, the spacecraft buzzed Enceladus at a distance of roughly 100 kilometers. For comparison, Cassini was nearly two million kilometers from Rhea when the image above was captured.

clipper's remarks: Talking of USA, it is one country that significantly increased its post-independence size through purchase of land from Russia, France, Mexico, Denmark etc. It must have made the most profitable land deal in history when it purchased Alaska from Russia at a little over 7 million dollars in 1867, which comes to about $10 per sq. mile (2 cents per acre). Just imagine that Alaska accounts for 20% of total oil production in USA, not to speak of the huge reserves of natural gas, and mineral resources like coal, gold, zinc etc. and you will appreciate the magnitude of the bargain!

Geographical oddities

Indonesia is a country consisting of islands only – more than 17,000 of them! But only about on-third of these are inhabited.

Norway has an area of approx. 150,000 sq. miles and a nominal coastline of approx. 1600 miles. But if you study its map through a magnifying glass, you will find that the coastline looks like an extremely kinky hair – the result of glacial erosion that has caused innumerable fjords along the coast. If you could straighten out the kinks, the coastline would stretch beyond 14,000 miles – that is more than the distance from the North to the South pole! United States with all its territories has nearly the same length of coastline for an area which is 27 times the size of Norway!

Scientists have found that acidic ozone water can effectively kill H1N1 viruses, with the advantages that it leaves no environmentally harmful residue and is inexpensive to prepare.

Scientists have found that acidic ozone water can deactivate H1N1 viruses very effectively, offering a promising disinfectant for the millions of people trying to avoid the disease. Acidic ozone water (AOW) is made from regular tap water mixed with a small amount of acid such as hydrochloric acid, along with an ozonized gas that can be produced in the lab. After deactivating the virus, the substance eventually decays into plain water, leaving no residue or harmful materials in the environment.

AOW also has the advantage that it may cost significantly less to prepare compared with chemical disinfectants.

The U.S. has 1,321 billion barrels of oil (or barrels of oil equivalent for other sources of energy) when combining its recoverable natural gas, oil and coal reserves. This is oil known to exist and oil estimates in fields as yet untapped. Between Alaska and the continental offshore potential, we could literally be self-sufficient.

Keep in mind, however, oil represents less than 40% of our energy use, nor do we import most of that from the Middle East. Two-thirds of our oil consumption comes from North America with Canada and Mexico being major providers. By expanding domestic production, we could reduce dependency on the Middle East even further.

When it comes to coal, the United States is the Saudi Arabia of coal with 28% of all the world’s coal reserves. Russian comes in second with 19%. Coal represents more than 50% of all the electricity produced in America and the Obama administration has declared war on it.

That town is Gladstone, a town of 30,000 on the mid-north coast of Queensland just to the South of Rockhampton.

With nine planned or committed infrastructure projects over $1bn in value, Gladstone is the classic example of an infrastructure boom town. Indeed, the value of the town's projects has rocketed 188% over the last two years to a breath-taking $65bn.

THE sun’s million-degree outer atmosphere is the last place you would expect to find rain, yet a form of it does occur there. The stuff could help explain why the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is much hotter than closer in.

Coronal rain is made of dense knots thousands of kilometres across consisting of relatively cold gas, at tens or hundreds of thousands of degrees C, which pours down towards the sun’s visible surface from the outer atmosphere at speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per second. “There’s just this constant rain of these blobs that seem to be coming down from high up,” says Judy Karpen of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
