MPs demand inquiry into great energy 'swindle'

Anger is growing over energy prices because the "big six" – British Gas, EDF, E.ON, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern – have cut bills by only 4 per cent this year to £1,140, despite wholesale costs, which make up 60 per cent of the bill, halving in the past year. Minnows such as First:Utility and OVO Energy have recently introduced bills as low as £921, £440 cheaper than Scottish Power's tariff of £1,361.

As well as supplying 99 per cent of households, the "big six" own a network of power stations, making them strong examples of "vertically-integrated" businesses.

The "big six" suppliers say they cannot lower prices because they are locked into expensive, long-term contracts agreed when prices spiked last year and have been hit by rising environmental costs and bad debt.

the number of households paying 10 per cent or more of their income on fuel bills had risen to 6.6m this year, one in four families.

Maine Residents Angered by Expansion of Dirigo Program Subsidy

New taxes to support Dirigo Care, the Maine state government's attempt at providing "universal" health care, have so angered Maine residents that a coalition dedicated to repealing the tax increases was able to collect nearly twice as many signatures as required to put a repeal referendum on the state's ballot this November.

Dirigo Care is being funded by newly imposed taxes on health insurance claims, as well as on goods such as beer, soda, wine, and tobacco.

Tax Promises Broken

Dirigo Care has cost the state's taxpayers nearly $164 million in the four years since its inception. Although its intended purpose was to insure 128,000 people who had no health coverage, only 4 percent of that total, or just over 5,000 individuals, have been successfully removed from the rolls of the uninsured and into the state program, according to figures from the Maine Heritage Policy Center.

"Dirigo Care has been worse than useless," said Greg Scandlen, director of Consumers for Health Care Choices

World production of fossil fuels-oil, coal, and natural gas-increased 2.9 percent in 2008 to reach 27.4 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) per day.¹ (See Figure 1.) In the first half of the year, producers strained to meet global demand, but when the recession took hold later in the year the market was swamped by excess supply. Energy prices reflected this shift: oil peaked at $144 per barrel in July, then fell to $34 per barrel in December^.2 Continuing a decade-long trend, most of the growth was in the Asia-Pacific region, where production grew 6.3 percent

The ratio of proved oil reserves to annual production has held steady at roughly 40:1 for more than 20 years, but the remaining reserves are increasingly concentrated in more politically and technically challenging terrain

Taking the bus can be a cheaper commute than driving a car. No fluctuating gas prices or expensive vehicle maintenance to deal with. Leave the driving to someone else, and you can read a book, talk on the phone, or listen to your iPod for a more relaxing route to work or school.

But waiting for the bus can be a chore ... unless you get to hang out in one of these unusual bus stops around the world. Some communities celebrate their heritage, others places make use of creative materials, and a few towns let artists express themselves with a bus stop as the canvas.

Maybe if more transit systems had attractive bus stops like these, more people would enjoy a car-free commute!

Differences in emissions and safety standards, as well as consumer preferences, have kept some fuel-efficient superminis off U.S. shores

Automobiles and apple pie: about as American as you can get, right? Well, no. The U.S. gave up the global car crown years ago. While Detroit cranked out gas-guzzling behemoths, carmakers elsewhere worked toward building smaller, more fuel-efficient models. When gas prices hit dizzying new heights in September of 2005, American consumers realized they could admire all sorts of vehicles they would never be able to buy. "Why can't we get that car here?" has become a common refrain.

Wary of Diesel

Safety standards are another reason European and Asian superminis don't make it to U.S. shores. Vehicles in America have to reach a certain weight. The bare bones design of Tata's Nano (TTM) would not likely meet the restrictions necessary to be considered roadworthy in the U.S.

Retail Sales Plunge By Largest Amount This Year

Retail sales declined in September by the largest amount this year as car sales plummeted following the end of the government's popular Cash for Clunkers program. But outside of autos, sales were better than expected.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that retail sales dropped 1.5 percent last month. That's smaller than the 2.1 percent fall economists had expected, but still the biggest setback since sales dropped 3.2 percent in December.

Consumer demand, which accounts for 70 percent of total economic activity, is being watched closely by economists who worry that any recovery from the recession could stall due to rising unemployment and tight credit conditions.

Outside of autos, demand at gasoline stations rose 1.1 percent September, partially reflecting higher prices. Excluding gas and auto sales, retail sales rose 0.4 percent in September.

Energy crisis is postponed as new gas rescues the world

The breakthrough has been to combine 3-D seismic imaging with new technologies to free "tight gas" by smashing rocks, known as hydro-fracturing or "fracking" in the trade.

The US is leading the charge. Operations in Pennsylvania and Texas have already been sufficient to cut US imports of liquefied natural gas (LGN) from Trinidad and Qatar to almost nil, with knock-on effects for the global gas market – and crude oil. It is one reason why spot prices for some LNG deliveries have dropped to 50pc of pipeline contracts.

We may soon be looking at an era when gas, wind and solar power, combined with a smarter grid and a switch to electric cars returns the country to near energy self-sufficiency.

Engineers have performed their magic once again. The world is not going to run short of energy as soon as feared.

America is not going to bleed its wealth importing fuel. Russia's grip on Europe's gas will weaken. Improvident Britain may avoid paralysing blackouts by mid-decade after all.

The World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires last week was one of those events that shatter assumptions. Advances in technology for extracting gas from shale and methane beds have quickened dramatically, altering the global balance of energy faster than almost anybody expected.

Tony Hayward, BP's chief executive, said proven natural gas reserves around the world have risen to 1.2 trillion barrels of oil equivalent, enough for 60 years' supply – and rising fast.

This is almost unknown to the public, despite the efforts of Nick Grealy at "No Hot Air" who has been arguing for some time that Britain's shale reserves could replace declining North Sea output.

Lieberman-Warner (S.2191) relies heavily on an unproven technology, capturing carbon and sequestering it. Even with the most generous assumptions " presuming that carbon capture and sequestration is commercially developed in 10 years " the economic costs for the average American are staggering. Under a more realistic scenario, the economic impacts in terms of losses in the job market, losses in household budgets, and higher energy prices will be drastically higher. To make matters worse, there will be inconsequential effects on the environment to show for it, if any.

The Senate's leading climate-change bill, while aiming to combat global warming by reducing carbon dioxide in the air, actually poses "extraordinary perils" for Americans and the economy, according to a new study from The Heritage Foundation.

Fear of steep energy bill rises

Domestic UK energy bills could rise by 60% by 2016 in a worst-case scenario identified by the energy regulator.

However, most other estimates outlined in the Ofgem report would see prices rise between 14% and 25% above inflation by 2020.

The report was the result of Project Discovery, a scheme that Ofgem started in March, in which it outlines four possible scenarios for energy use and security in the next 10 to 15 years.

Green transition: Rapid economic recovery and significant expansion in green measures lower gas demand, but increase electricity demand for electric vehicles and heat pumps. Domestic energy bills rise by 23% by 2020.

Green stimulus: During a slow economic recovery, governments support stimulus packages targeting environmental goals. Consumers energy bills rise 14% by 2020.

"These are big challenges. Consumers are already enduring high energy prices," said Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan.
