Black fox spotted for first time - see exclusive video

It's linked to Gaelic tradition and superstition. But the unlucky black fox has never been spotted in Britain before. Until now.

Kevin Hehir, 48, was out walking in a cemetery with his friend Jeff Brown when they spied the creature lurking among the gravestones.

Kevin, from Ribbleton in Preston, said: "It was on the outskirts of Chorley, I don't want to give the exact location out as it's a very rare fox and I don't want people to go and try and catch it.

"We were walking along looking at gravestones and I spotted it.

"I thought, it's a myth, there's no such thing.

"I took some photos and videoed it.

"It's only a cub, I managed to get right up to it – I thought it was the Devil looking at me. It's definitely a black fox.

"It's really good because I've been told they're very rare and I've got it on video."

In North America, foxes with black coats are often found, with a variable amount of white or white-banded hair in the dark coat.

The following is by no means an indictment of the religion called Wicca. Wicca is indeed a valid and powerful path for those who truthfully walk it and understand it. However, there is a body of people who believe that Wicca is the descendant of the religious ways of the Gaelic or other Celtic peoples (or 'Celts' as a general nomenclature). This simply is not the case.

The following is a brief comparison of the Wiccan religion and Celtic religion. The purpose of this exercise is to dispel the notion that Wicca is Celtic, or derived from Celtic religion.

The people who make the statement that Wicca is Celtic are usually of two sorts. These are the new people who either for their own reasons truly believe this to be the case, or they have fallen prey to some unscrupulous teacher who uses the allure of things "Celtic" to draw in new students or ensure profits.

In both cases the problem is exacerbated by the fact that solid information is not easily accessible to the general public.

clipper's remarks: Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence.

We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully.

By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela, just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

With its heady brew of drums, fire, theatre and pagan ritual on the top of Calton Hill, the Beltane Fire Festival, celebrating the arrival of Summer, is one of the most exuberant events in Edinburgh's calendar. But what's it all about?

What's your name?

How did you get involved with Beltane and what's the festival mean for you?

Like many of the participants, I first got involved as a spectator. I heard a vague rumour about an amazing festival on Calton Hill so I wandered up with a drum and a few friends to check it out. I caught a bit of the procession and then hooked up with some other drummers and when I stopped it was dawn and I hadn't yet touched the alcohol in my bag. The sheer energy of the event, even on the periphery, blew me away and I knew that I had to get more involved.

A village in the southwest of Ireland won its battle to get its ancient "harlot" back

For centuries, the village in County Limerick, known as Doon in English, had been known in Gaelic as Dun Bleisce, or Fort of the Harlot, but the name was changed in 2003.

The village's Gaelic name was changed to An Dun, or The Fort in Gaelic

The community argued that, although the literal translation of the word is harlot, the woman who the village was named after in ancient times may not have been a harlot in the sense of the term today.

Banshee comes from the Irish words "bean," woman, (ban) and "sidhe," fairy, (shee.) It is said that Banshees come to only those with a strong Celtic lineage

In Irish legend, a banshee wails around a house if someone in the house is about to die. There are particular families who are believed to have Banshees attached to them, and whose cries herald the death of a member of that family.

Traditionally, when a citizen of an Irish village died, a woman would sing a lament at their funeral. These women singers are sometimes referred to as "keeners". Legend has it that, for five great Gaelic families: the O'Gradys, the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, and the Kavanaghs, the lament would be sung by a fairy woman; having foresight, she would appear before the death and keen.

THE church elder’s reaction was one of utter disbelief. Shaking his head emphatically, he couldn’t take in what the distinguished professor from Yale University was telling him.

"No," insisted Jim McRae, an elder of the small congregation of Clearwater in Florida. "This way of worshipping comes from our slave past. It grew out of the slave experience, when we came from Africa."

But Willie Ruff, an Afro-American professor of music at Yale, was adamant - he had traced the origins of gospel music to Scotland.

The distinctive psalm singing had not been brought to America’s Deep South by African slaves but by Scottish émigrés who worked as their masters and overseers, according to his painstaking research.

He said: "We as black Americans have lived under a misconception. Our cultural roots are more Afro-Gaelic than Afro-American. Just look at the Harlem phone book, it’s more like the book for North Uist.

The Isle of Skye is a romantic island in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. A popular vacation destination the island has some of the most stunning scenery in the United Kingdom, a deep history and a rich Gaelic Culture (about one third of the population have Gaelic as their first language).

Skye is also a popular vacation destination for hill walkers and mountain climbers. The Cuillin Ridge is a group of rocky mountains that dominate the island. Mountaineers are often surprised at how challenging the hills can be and some are even caught unawares and have to be rescued by the emergency services (remember that in the UK the emergency services telephone number is 999).

Hangovers rarely inspire scientific breakthroughs. But Billy Quinn's eureka moment occurred on just such a head-pounding morning in 2003. After a night spent carousing at a pub in Galway, Ireland, he and colleague Declan Moore were discussing their plans for the day over a traditional breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, white pudding, beans, and fried potatoes. The two archaeologists were scheduled to excavate a nearby grassy mound known as a fulacht fiadh (pronounced "full-oct fee-ah"). About 5,000 of the mounds have been discovered throughout Ireland, most dating from 1500 to 500 BC. They're not much to look at — excavation reveals a rectangular trough (fulacht is Gaelic for "recess") surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped arrangement of burnt stones. No one's certain what they were used for, but in a flash of insight, Quinn proposed a hypothesis in keeping with his nation's cerevisaphilic reputation: The Bronze Age relics might just be Ireland's first breweries.
