The perfect cup of joe is determined by a number of things, from the quality of the beans to the roughness of the grind. But even bad coffee tastes best when it is served at an ideal temperature: approximately 58 degrees celsius. But coffee cools quickly, and even the most ideal cup of coffee, exposed to the open air, becomes less than ideal in less than a few seconds.

What’s the java gourmet to do but turn to the sweet aid of technology to help tame that dark but temperate mistress, the coffee cup?

What this means is that if you pour coffee in this cup, the first thing that will happen is that the cup will cool your coffee down to the ideal 58 degrees celsius. Then, when your coffee starts to cool too much, the phase changing material will release the heat back into the cup of coffee.

The Ministry of Defence was left embarrassed tonight after its internal guide to preventing leaks appeared on the internet.

The Defence Manual of Security sets out tactics for preventing Chinese and Russian intelligence services from using blackmail or hi-tech gadgets to obtain sensitive information.

It also describes methods of countering the threat from 'subversive or terrorist organisations' and investigative journalists.

The three-volume, 560,000-word guide - marked 'Restricted' - was released on the Wikileaks website, which campaigns for freedom of information.

But the MoD insisted the publication did not pose 'significant security concerns' because it dates from 2001.

The document branded Chinese intelligence activity 'widespread', with a 'voracious appetite for all kinds of information'.

While China was 'at least a generation behind the West' in key military areas, it was trying to 'acquire illegally the technology that will enable them to catch up'.

the witch hunt is on: Politicians are weighing in, pushing for federal legislation that would prohibit pilots from using laptop computers and other devices while flying

on this square-wheeled bandwagon is Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who wants to ban all nonessential gadgets from the cockpit

What's true in a car is generally true in an airplane," he added, demonstrating an exquisite knowledge of how jetliners are operated

most all airlines prohibit the personal use of computers in the cockpit

Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) restrict a pilot's use of certain other devices

Is a federal law going to make any difference?

And if Menendez is truly that concerned about "distraction," why is he not weighing in on the improvement of flight and duty time regulations, which, believe me, are a much bigger threat to safety than a pilot's laptop or iPhone.
