Welcome Salute & Public Visitation For USS NEW YORK

The future USS NEW YORK (LPD 21), built with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in her bow, will be commissioned in New York City on Nov. 7, 2009. The ship arrived on Nov. 2. The public can welcome her by visiting the ship before she leaves on Nov. 12, 2009.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., on November 2, the future USS NEW YORK will come to a standstill across from the World Trade Center site, dip her flag, and deliver a 21-gun salute. Members of the Fire Department of New York, the New York Police Department, Port Authority Police, members of the families of 9/11 victims and veterans will gather on the shore at the North Cove in the World Financial Center to return the salute. Long long ago when future seemed to be so distant and dim, people of the Soviet Union dreamt a lot and cherished a bunch of illusions about fantastic makings of the future. And straight 50 years ago, on the eve of New Year, one of most famous Russian newspapers published a special edition. Group of journalists-dreamers took their risks and tried to predict how it’s going to be 50 years after, in 2010.

But it seems that they were not so good at future forecasting and failed at almost any article. So let’s see what came out of it.

This cutting has 3 interesting articles. The first one on the left is called “Funny Birthday party” and tells about a reunion of some boarding school group. They met and celebrated 100-th birthday of 17 people in their group. Two articles to the right are about tunnel under the Caspian Sea which is more than 200 miles long and also about the underwater mine at a depth of 470 meters (it is about 1400 feet).

The 10 states whose obesity rates have remained unchanged or decreased since 2008 have seen an average reduction in reported diabetes incidence of 0.3 percentage points. These states -- Delaware, Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Louisiana, Virginia, Missouri, Nevada and Florida -- provide examples for future study to learn more about managing diabetes nationally, according to Gallup-Healthways.

Creating the rift

The crack, 20 feet wide in spots, opened in 2005. Some geologists believed then that it would spawn a new ocean. But that view was controversial, and the rift had not been well studied.

A new study involving an international team of scientists and reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters finds the processes creating the rift are nearly identical to what goes on at the bottom of oceans, further indication a new sea is in the region's future.
