There must be few things more frightening than being caught up in the deadly path of an all-absorbing lava flow. Imagine the intense heat, being spattered with skin-scalding magma that’s erupting from the depths beneath or being covered in blistering hot ash spewed forth from the gaping mouth of the giant fiery furnace.

A drill bores 300 feet down at a North Seattle home site, preparing for a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Significant savings

Maloney estimates the cost of running a geothermal system in a 3,000-square-foot house would be about $700 a year, with an equivalent natural-gas system costing as much as $6,000 a year.

One analysis used by Maloney, however, estimates a 70 percent drop in home energy costs.

The Department of Energy estimates ground-source heat pumps use 25 to 50 percent less electricity than conventional heating or cooling systems.

He estimates the cost of providing a conventional natural-gas system, including a furnace, air conditioner and water heater, might be $10,000. A ground-source geothermal system probably would cost $15,000 to $20,000

Nonetheless, Maloney said that with this year's rising energy costs, his rate of installations is expected to go from about the 50 of previous years to 75 in 2008.

I built this cabin by myself from new materials for under $2000 (not including windows, doors, and porch). I live in this cabin year round.

The cabin is 14 x 14 and aproximately 400 square feet with a full loft. It includes a kitchen, dining area, bathroom and living area downstairs and a large bedroom and office upstairs.

My electricity comes from the solar panels you see on the roof and a small backup generator. This power runs all my lights, water pump, tv, computer etc. My heat is primarily from direct solar gain through the south facing windows and I use propane for a backup furnace, fridge, stove, and on demand water heater. The station at Orono, Maine is located on the roof of a 4 story university building near a, chimney and furnace exhaust, and above several window mounted air conditioners.

Courtesy of Anthony Watts, the arrows show the flow of air into the sensor that is 2 feet downwind of the hot air conditioning coils.

Gardiner, Maine is located in the driveway of a local water facility.

The Lewiston Maine temperature station is in the heart of a large urban heat island and violates every guideline for locating temperature stations.

NCDC

Farmington, Presque Isle and Houlton stations all have problems that are not as obvious as the others. The Portland station is at the airport between runways where large passenger jets “run-up” their engines before take-off.
