Liberal Democrats have a long tradition of tarring opponents as the monolithic forces of hatred and prejudice while casting themselves as the enlightened proponents of peace, love, and decency. And this election shows that tradition is alive and well.

McCain has done nothing to fuel racism. Or, put another way, the McCain campaign has done as much to promote prejudice as the Obama campaign has to inflame the vile passions behind the “Abort Sarah Palin” bumper sticker, Madonna’s stage video lumping McCain in with Hitler, the eugenic snobbery aimed at Palin’s son with Down syndrome, or the column in the Philadelphia Daily News that predicted a “race war” if McCain wins.

Looks like Toyota is bringing the 56-mpg iQ microcar to America after all, but it's slapping a Scion badge on it first.

Car magazine called the iQ the best concept of 2007 (.pdf) and "the most significant small car since the original Smart City Coupe back in 1997." Everything about it, from the shape of the dashboard to the placement of the gas tank, was designed to maximize interior room, and the iQ, like the Fiat 500 seems much bigger than it is.

The iQ also would give Toyota/Scion a strong competitor against the Smart ForTwo, which despite mixed reviews has been a hit. More than 18,000 have sold since the car was introduced to America eight months ago. The iQ also would help Toyota/Scion meet tightening fuel economy standards.

no word on what we'd see under the hood of an American iQ, but it's a safe bet it won't be the 55.9-mpg 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas or the 1.4-liter turbodiesel engines available in Europe. More likely is the 1.5-liter gasoline four-banger found in the Yaris.

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A pair of car designers said they have constructed a vehicle that averaged 113.1 miles to the gallon of fuel during a drive from Canada to Oregon.

Craig Henderson and Bill Green said the drive from the Canada-Washington border to the Washington-Oregon border on Interstate 5 in the car they designed, named the Avion, set a new record for fuel efficiency, KPTV, Portland, Ore., reported Monday.

Green and Henderson said a prototype version of the Avion, which is named after the French word for airplane, averaged 103.7 miles per gallon during a drive in 1986. However, they said the accomplishment has only recently drawn attention due to the current interest in fuel-efficient cars.

They said the aerodynamic design of the vehicle means it can reach speeds of more than 100 mph with only 3 to 6 horsepower.

Henderson and Green said the Avion is scheduled to go into limited production soon to allow consumers to purchase their own super-efficient cars.

Christians flee Mosul after violence

MOSUL, Iraq: More Christian families have quit their homes in Mosul, a local official said on Monday, as the UN voiced concern at the community's plight in the northern Iraqi city.

The violence that began late last month has provoked the exodus of over 1,000 Christian families since Friday, although the numbers of those leaving had started to drop since the police reinforcements arrived on Sunday, according to the head of Mosul's bureau of displaced people, Jaweat Ismael.

Another 109 families quit the city Sunday and Monday, he said, although there was "no new wave of displacements."

"These acts are aimed to fuel tensions and exacerbate instability at a critical time," he said in a statement.

Iraq's 275-member Parliament passed a controversial law last month that will allow provincial elections to go ahead in early January, but crucially it struck a clause that would have reserved seats on local councils for Christians.

Morning Edition, October 13, 2008 · More than 50 years after its first flight, the KC-135 tanker is the workhorse of the U.S. Air Force, a flying gas station that loiters over the skies of Iraq and Afghanistan every day. And it will keep flying for at least 30 more years — there isn't even a contract for a replacement.

The plane entered service in 1957, when President Eisenhower was just starting his second term. With the Cold War heating up, armed B-52 bombers idled on runways, ready at a moment's notice to fly over the North Pole to strike the Soviet Union.

But the B-52, an eight-engine gas guzzler, couldn't carry enough fuel for a round-trip mission.

Enter the KC-135 Stratotanker, a jet-age filling station in the sky. The B-52 is still flying missions — and so is the Stratotanker, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It refuels bombers, fighters, cargo planes — even other tankers.
