Navy Ships Repel Bacteria, Thanks to Shark Skin

Ever wonder how sharks stay so squeaky clean, while whales and other sea creatures attract barnacles and other critters? That smooth skin inspired Sharklet Technologies, which based a new bacteria-busting film on it. And the Navy’s going to put it on their boats.

Researchers have been designing products inspired by or flat-out aping mother nature for years, a process called biomimicry. Sharklet Technologies is the latest to employ biomimicry, having studied the pattern of shark skin and printed it on a thin film in order to repel smaller bugs—bacteria.

Popular Science notes that the film, which is covered with microscopic diamond-shaped bumps, is the first “surface topography” proven to keep the bugs at bay. In tests in a California hospital, for three weeks the plastic sheeting’s surface prevented dangerous microorganisms, such as E. coli and Staphylococcus A, from establishing colonies large enough to infect humans.

Oil supplies in flux

According to a report in the Guardian, the Agency may have deliberately overstated world oil supplies, in order to avoid a worldwide buying panic. An unnamed (and therefore unverified) sources claim that the US has played an influential role in encouraging the organization to "underplay the rate of decline from existing oil fields while overplaying the chances of finding new reserves." Another (also unnamed) source was quoted as saying "We have [already] entered the 'peak oil' zone. I think that the situation is really bad."

So whether for the planet or the pocketbook, it's time to wake up. Things simply will not stay the way they are. We can either start spending on clean energy and efficiency now, or pay even more for the privilege of using up more fossil fuel and polluting the planet, with dire consequences. Why does this seem like a difficult choice?

A new EU project SARTRE is being launched to develop and test technology for vehicles that can drive themselves in long road trains on motorways. This technology has the potential to improve traffic flow and journey times, offer greater comfort to drivers, reduce accidents, and improve fuel consumption and hence lower CO2 emissions.

The lead vehicle would be handled by a professional driver who would monitor the status of the road train. Those in following vehicles could take their hands off the wheel, read a book or watch TV, while they travel along the motorway. Their vehicle would be controlled by the lead vehicle.

Biofuels Breakthrough: Making Fuel From Air With Engineered Microbes

clipper's remarks: Although the process sounds similar to algae-produced biofuels, the Joule process is incredibly (and beneficially) different for several reasons:

* Doesn’t produce biomass
* No agricultural feedstock needed
* Can be conducted on non-arable land
* Doesn’t need fresh water
* Produces fuel directly without the need for extraction or refinement

Apparently Joule has discovered some unique genes inside these microbes that produce the enzymes responsible for directly making the molecules found in diesel. From there, engineering organisms to make other fuels was a simple step. At this point, production of the fuels has only been done in the lab, but Joule has plans to open a pilot plant in early 2011.

It's all about stalling and doing nothing while Iran steadily moves on with it's nuclear programs. Why not just give them the dang bomb, shut down the IAEA and the UN, eliminate all diplomatic positions and end the charade. Everyone knows that Iran is NOT going to stop its nuclear weapons development.

U.S. can give Iran space to accept atom deal: official

The United States is willing to give Iran time to decide whether to accept a U.N. draft deal that is meant to defuse nuclear tensions with world powers but has drawn Iranian objections, a U.S. diplomat said on Monday.

Addressing Iran's misgivings over sending low-enriched uranium (LEU) abroad before it receives reactor fuel in return, the U.N. nuclear agency chief has suggested Iran place the LEU in a friendly third country pending arrival of the fuel.

A senior Iranian official rejected the idea at the weekend.

But Tehran has yet to give a full, official reply on the proposal

"There have been communications back and forth. We are in extra innings in these negotiations. That's sometimes the way these things go," said Glyn Davies, U.S. ambassador to the IAEA.

The Northern coast of Russia is covered with through the most part of the year. People of Russia couldn’t stand the situation when they have a 5000 mile long coastline but can’t transport anything across it. They thought they can fight the nature for their freedom of movement and have implemented those giant, nuclear-powdered icebreakers. They are completely independent from the fuel and are being powered by small nuclear power-plants on board. Here are some photos of those machines and the coastline across which they swim crushing all this ice and scaring the polar bears.

Retired Army Sgt. Richard Yarosh has gotten used to the stares. His face is blanketed in knotty scar tissue. His nose tip is missing. His ears are gone, as is part of his right leg. His fingers are permanently bent and rigid.

All is the result of an explosion in Iraq that doused him in fuel and fire three years ago.

"I know people are curious," he said. "They'll stop in their tracks and look. I guess I can understand. I probably would have stared, too."

Soon, a lot more people will be staring at Yarosh's face but in a very different way: A life-sized oil painting of him will go on display at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington later this month. The portrait, by Matthew Mitchell, is a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, which recognizes modern portraiture at the gallery known for its collection of notable Americans. There seems to be a new interest in Puharich's patent (US Patent # 4,394,230) even though it is more than 20 years old (interesting reading). Below is some info from the rexresearch.com site:

Dr Andrija Puharich reportedly drove his motor home for hundreds of thousands of miles around North America in the 1970s using only water as fuel. At a mountain pass in Mexico, he collected snow for water. Here is the only article he wrote on the subject, plus his patent ():

...Visionary scientists tell us that the ideal fuel in the future will be as cheap as water, that it will be non toxic both in its short term, and in its long term, effects, that it will be renewable in that it can be used over and over again, that it will be safe to handle, and present minimal storage and transportation problems and costs. On Thursday, Pvt. Velez, 21, was one of 13 people killed and 30 wounded during an Army psychiatrist's rampage at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

She was due back from Iraq on Dec. 10, but came home early after she found out she was three months pregnant. Her family was planning to visit her in Texas next month.

But Friday there came a knock on the front door of the Velez family's Humboldt Park two-flat. Outside were Army officers with tragic news.

"The hardest thing is to accept the reality that she is gone," Juan Velez said through an interpreter.

Pvt. Velez had her father's electric smile, glorious dance moves and charisma that filled a room, family members said.

"This girl was full of life. She was a happy girl, and he took her from us," Pvt. Velez's cousin, Sandy Rivera said. "She was supposed to have the baby, and everything was going to be happy. We were all waiting. It's not fair."

She made her father proud.
