'Killer wallaby' fear after boy survives attack

RESIDENTS fear a mob of vicious wallabies hanging around a housing estate will kill a child, following a terrifying attack on a nine-year-old boy.

Concerned White Rock dad Alwyn "Bones" Bailey told the Cairns Post if he had not been there to fight off the 1m-tall wallaby on Saturday afternoon, he had no doubt his nine-year-old son Morgan would have been mauled to death.

"Its deadset serious. Someone should get a gun and shoot the buggers," Mr Bailey said.

"They're not just friendly, cute little wallabies any more they're killers."

An Environmental Protection Agency spokesman said attacks on humans by wild wallabies or kangaroos were extremely rare, but animals that were regularly fed could become conditioned to seeing people as a source of food then become frustrated and aggressive if they did not get it.

If you try to get every last little cheater, you're going to be pretty frustrated. There are always going to be ways to beat testing. But if you don't test, sport is gone, it really is. Then you might say, well, OK, everybody is going to be on drugs, and they will all be equal again. But people will start getting really sick. All these things are toxic.

One reason - despite the large number of small businesses, oftentimes, they don't have a clear stance on the issues. The NFIB, typically more conservative though definitely not in all respect, represents one of the US's largest lobbying groups and it reaches a wide group at very much a grassroots level. Still there even on issues like health care, it's difficult to suss out exactly what all small businesses want. Same goes for taxes... The NFIB has a position and a huge membership base but it's unclear how much its membership votes the "NFIB" line.

MEXICO CITY - Hundreds of thousands of frustrated Mexicans, many carrying pictures of kidnapped loved ones, marched across the country Saturday to demand government action against a relentless tide of killings, abductions and shootouts.

The mass candlelight protests were a challenge to the government of President Felipe Calderon, who has made fighting crime a priority and deployed more than 25,000 soldiers and federal police to wrest territory from powerful drug cartels.

Cries of "enough" and "long live Mexico" rose up from sea of white-clad demonstrators filling Mexico City's enormous Zocalo square. The protesters held candles twinkling in the darkness as they sang the national anthem before dispersing.

DENVER — Amid a spate of awkward on-air conflicts among MNSBC anchors at this week’s Democratic convention, some staff members say there are sharp internal disputes at the cable network over whether its opinion and personality-driven political coverage has crossed the line.

In addition to Olbermann, MSNBC personalities Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough and David Shuster were involved in Denver controversies.

On Monday evening, Olbermann interrupted Scarborough while he was talking about McCain being competitive in the polls. “Jesus, Joe, why don’t you get a shovel?” Olbermann remarked.

Fay’s rains put a dent in drought

Tropical Storm Fay frustrated forecasters with its twisted, crawling trek across Florida, where it dumped more than 30 inches of rain in some parts of the state.

But in North Central Florida, where many escaped the storm’s worst effects, Fay’s rainfall has helped by improving drought conditions.

“It does look like maybe a lot of Florida is not considered abnormally dry anymore,” said Marie Trabert with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. “We definitely are making strides to alleviate a drought.”

As of Tuesday, the Gainesville area had 3.30 inches of rain more than normal for the month. The total for the year still stood below normal by 2.95 inches.

Rainfall totals at the Gainesville Regional Airport over a four-day period during Fay came to 4.5 inches of rain.

McCotter Debates Tourist as Protest Winds Down

While millions were tuning in to the Democratic National Convention, a small band of Republicans continued to protest on the House floor for a vote on oil drilling Monday, even debating tourists.

At one point, Republican Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.) engaged in a one-on-one impromptu debate with a Prius-driving tourist who was having none of the Republican calls for domestic oil drilling as the key to lowering gas prices.

Randolph McGrorty, 45, of Miami, was touring the Capitol when his tour guide noted they could go on the House floor because of the GOP protest. Once there, McGrorty quickly grew frustrated at the drilling-centric Republican rhetoric and started asking McCotter why the Republicans don’t push hybrids instead as a transition to an economy less dependent on fossil fuels.

ATLANTA — Measles cases in the U.S. are at the highest level in more than a decade, with nearly half of those involving children whose parents rejected vaccination, health officials reported Thursday.

Worried doctors are troubled by the trend fueled by unfounded fears that vaccines may cause autism. The number of cases is still small, just 131, but that's only for the first seven months of the year. There were only 42 cases for all of last year.

Pediatricians are frustrated, saying they are having to spend more time convincing parents the shot is safe.

The CDC's review found that a number of cases involved home-schooled children not required to get the vaccines. Others can avoid vaccination by seeking exemptions, such as for religious reasons.

Even before the new pressure from the government, many Awakening members were growing frustrated — and at an especially delicate time. United States and Iraqi negotiators have just completed a draft security agreement that next year, Iraqi officials say, would substantially pull American forces back from cities and towns to be replaced by Iraqi security forces.

Awakening members complain, with rising bitterness, that the government has been slow to make good on its promises to recruit tens of thousands of its members into those security forces. General Perkins said only 5,200 members had been recruited in a force of about 100,000.

BAGHDAD — The Shiite-dominated government in Iraq is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols, the groups of former insurgents who joined the American payroll and have been a major pillar in the decline in violence around the nation.

In restive Diyala Province, Unites States and Iraqi military officials say there were orders to arrest hundreds of members of what is known as the Awakening movement as part of large security operations by the Iraqi military. At least five senior members have been arrested there in recent weeks, leaders of the groups say.

“The state cannot accept the Awakening,” said Sheik Jalaladeen al-Sagheer, a leading Shiite member of Parliament. “Their days are numbered.”

But it is causing a rift with the American military, which contends that any significant diminution of the Awakening could result in renewed violence, jeopardizing the substantial security gains in the past year.

Let’s say you’re talking on the phone to someone. They are having difficulty setting a filter in their email program. They have called you for help.

You can get frustrated trying to explain what to do over the phone…you can spend 15 minutes typing detailed instructions by email…or you can send them a short video that shows them exactly what to do.

Of the three, sending a video is the no-brainer best option. You simply record yourself demonstrating exactly what to do on your own screen…and then the other person can just watch the video and duplicate what you’ve done. Problem solved.

Jing is a great “quick and dirty” solution for producing simple video tutorials in a hurry. Does it replace traditional screen recording software? No, not even close…but it’s not supposed to. It’s just there for those moments when you need to make a video screen demonstration…but don’t have a lot of time to spare.
