French Polynesia

Below A few of my favorite pictures from a May 2008 trip to French Polynesia. We visited Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahaa, Raiatea, and many smaller motu's. We spent a few days on land, then took a week cruise on the M/s Paul Gauguin. I also added underwater images taken with my older Nikon D100 DSLR.

Travelling from the US to Bora Bora required an overnight stop in Tahiti. Our "in-transit" hotel.

What planet is this?

It’s Earth, of course, viewed from around 9900 miles above a small island called Tetiaora, one of the few bits of land on this half of the planet.

It’s weird that there’s a view of earth that’s almost entirely water.

South Seas Anchorage - Rangiroa Atoll, French Polynesia

Bearing down on the Tuamotus, our crew are keeping a sharp lookout ahead. They know now that the first sighting of land is going to be the fronded crown of a palm tree, rooted in the sand of a coral atoll barely above sea level. The expectation of being the first to spy one of these occupies cour crew with the formidable fervour of young boys. In the event, a number of these mop tops sluggishly grow out of the southern horizon, bathing in the western afternoon sunlight. Staring at an empty horizon for so long, these rising palms, eagerly awaited as they are, still bring with their languid appearance an almost unwanted intrusion.

‘Another of humans’ trivial life foibles’ our little ship thinks.

Willing as they are to have their daily routine disrupted once again, the actual arrival brings with it a momentary, but deeper level of relutant resistance to the imminent change.

Exotic Parrots Return to Cook Islands

Two centuries after a dazzlingly feathered parrot called the Rimitara lorikeet disappeared from the Cook Islands, a breeding colony of the birds has been re-established with the help of the islands' royalty.

Rimitara lorikeet is seen in this undated on the island of Atiu in Cook Islands after it disappeared there more than 200 years ago.

Some 27 of the birds were caught recently on the French Polyesnian island of Rimitara and transferred to Atiu.

Some 100 years ago, the Queen of Rimitara Island in French Polynesia imposed a tapu (taboo) that locals say saved the last naturally occurring population of one of the Pacific's most beautiful parrots.

Coral reefs in much of the Pacific Ocean are dying faster than previously thought, according to a study released Wednesday, with the decline driven by climate change, disease and coastal development.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill found that coral coverage in the Indo-Pacific -- an area stretching from Indonesia's Sumatra island to French Polynesia -- dropped 20 percent in the past two decades.

''We found the loss of reef building corals was much more widespread and severe than previously thought,'' said John Bruno, who conducted the study along with Elizabeth Selig. ''Even the best managed reefs in the Indo-Pacific suffered significant coral loss over the past 20 years.''

The Indo-Pacific contains 75 percent of the world's coral reefs and provide a home for a wide range of marine plants and animals. They provide shelter for island communities and are key source of income, mostly from the benefits of fishing and tourism.

Found: The clearest ocean waters on Earth

As clear as the clearest lakes on the planet, salty as ocean waters, and roughly the size of the Mediterranean – this, say researchers, is the clearest and most lifeless patch of ocean in the world. And it is in the middle of the Pacific.

"Satellite images that track the amount of chlorophyll in ocean waters suggested that this was one of the most life-poor systems on Earth," explains Patrick Raimbault of the University of the Mediterranean, in Marseille, France (see image, right).

In October 2004, Raimbault and colleagues set out to study the remarkable patch of ocean water on a three month cruise – called BIOSOPE – that left from Tahiti in French Polynesia, passed by Easter Island and ended on the Chilean coast. Along the way, they sampled the water's chemistry, physics and biology.

Beautiful but barren

At the clearest point of the south-east Pacific, near to Easter Island, Tedetti found that UV rays could penetrate more than 100 metres below the surface.
