Today, over 200 years after the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, an estimated 27 million people are still locked into slavery and servitude across the globe. This exhibition, organised by Hayward Touring in collaboration with the photographic agencies Autograph ABP and Magnum Photos, takes an in-depth look at the prevalance of slavery today through the lenses of eight internationally acclaimed documentary photographers: Abbas Ian Berry, Stuart Franklin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Paolo Pellegrin, Chris Steele-Perkins and Alex Webb.

Peru repeals tribal land laws

Thousands of Peruvian Indians have staged celebrations after Peru's congress voted to repeal two controversial laws that would have allowed the selling of Amazonian tribal lands to developers.

Legislators voted 66-29 in favour of repealing the laws, which had been issued by Alan Garcia, the president, on Friday.

Thousands of Indians celebrated in the main plaza of Bagua, a Peruvian jungle city where protesters had clashed with police on Wednesday.

"This is a new dawn for our people and for all Peruvians who wish to develop in liberty, not in oppression," Alberto Pizango, president of the Peruvian Jungle Inter-Ethnic Development Association, said.

Indigenous leaders said they were never consulted about the laws and that they were intended only to benefit a free trade agreement Peru has signed with the United States.

In sharp contrast, McCain has promised tax cuts to promote economic growth and strengthen the U.S. dollar. The federal corporate tax rate today is 35 percent, and McCain suggests cutting it to 25 percent. This would mirror rates elsewhere: The average corporate tax rate in the European Union was slashed from 38 percent in 1996 to 24 percent by 2007. The rates in India and China are lower as well. American companies are not going to produce more jobs and higher wages with this crippling competitive disadvantage.

Peru moves to end Amazon protests

Peru has declared a state of emergency in jungle areas where indigenous groups are blocking oil and gas installations in protest at a new land sale law.

Some 65 Amazon tribes say the law will make it easier for big energy companies to buy up their land, parts of which are known to be rich in oil and gas.

The indigenous people have been demonstrating for more than a week at hydro-electric dams and oil and gas installations in three different parts of Peru's Amazon basin.

They are angry at a law which they say makes it easier for investors to buy their land because it lowers the bar for consent from two-thirds of a community assembly to a simple majority.

A careful reading of the initiative, "Enforcement of Laws Related to Prostitution and Sex Workers," however, shows a measure that shields child prostitution and traffickers of human beings

Yet the San Francisco ballot measure completely ignores the prostitution of children. The measure simply states, "Law enforcement agencies shall not allocate any resources for the investigation and prosecution of prostitutes for prostitution." Astonishingly, there's no exemption that encourages police to enforce the law for minors.

If the measure passes, the city is likely to become an international haven for pimps who peddle girls and boys, and perverts seeking sex with minors.

The other big problem: The measure prohibits city law enforcement from applying for grants to prosecute human traffickers. That's right, this measure gives a free pass to the human sex-slave trade -- in a city that is a central stop for international sex-trade rings.

Mobile Users Would Watch Ads to Get Free Content

Some 88% of mobile users in the UK are willing to receive pre-roll mobile ads in return for free video content, according to 4th Screen Advertising’s Adlndex for Mobile research, conducted by Dynamic Logic.

Some 59% of participants said the mobile ads made them more interested in the advertised brand, and 62% said the ads gave a good impression of the brands being advertised.

Participants seem happy to view pre-rolls ads, provided the advertising is matched appropriately to the video content.

Overall response to pre-roll ads on mobile phones is very positive, particularly among a young male audience, considered to be early adopters.

Respondents seem to be happy with the trade-off of watching a mobile pre-roll ad in exchange for free video content, especially males and the younger audience. Some 88% said they were happy to have video ads if it meant they could watch free video.

The US has been slowly peeling away its ban, and in March, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the sale of absinthes that were "thujone free" (containing less than 10 parts per million).

Said to turn mild-mannered imbibers into raving maniacs, it was banned in the US and much of Europe in the early 1900s.

(Remember Van Gogh's ear incident? Some scholars blame the green fairy.)

The chemical culprit was thujone, a toxic compound found in the crushed flowers and leaves of absinthe's key ingredient, wormwood. Or so we thought.

Unbalanced U.S. trade with China since 2001 has had a devastating effect on U.S. workers. Between 2001 and 2007, 2.3 million jobs were lost or displaced, including 366,000 in 2007 alone (Scott 2008). These jobs were displaced by the growth of the U.S. trade deficit with China, which increased from $84 billion in 2001 to $262 billion in 2007.

Growing China trade deficits between 2001 and 2007 eliminated jobs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
