FUTURE colonisers of Mars needn't worry about lugging materials from Earth to build their bases - the most widely used building material on Earth, steel, could be manufactured on the Red Planet.

The rover Opportunity has found elemental iron - a key ingredient of steel - peppered across the Martian surface as a result of collisions with iron-rich meteorites. The dry conditions and lack of atmospheric oxygen mean that the stuff has not rusted, says Geoffrey Landis of NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

On Earth, any natural metallic iron rusts in our wet, oxygenated environment, so we rely on iron oxides such as haematite to make steel. Yet these oxides must be stripped of oxygen molecules in the steel-making process, which requires vast amounts of energy (Acta Astronomica, DOI: 10.1016/j.actaastro.2008.07.011).

1. Don't bother updating your software.

2. Believe everything you see. If a pop up window tells you that Windows has found spyware on your computer or that you have 324 errors in your registry, you'd better click on it.

3. You need more free smilies and screensavers.

Everyone loves smilies, especially the friends that "msg u bak n 4th @ myspace". And screensavers? Shut up. I love having fancy animated crap displayed on my monitor when I'm nowhere near it - that's how everyone walking past knows what a cool guy I am. None of the websites giving this stuff away want to piggyback any nasty BHOs or other malware anyways.

4. Use your main email address and the same password everywhere you register for an account.

Italy refuses to prosecute comic for Pope gay joke

(Rome) Italy’s Justice Minister has rejected a call to prosecute stand-up comic Sabina Guzzanti for telling an audience that Benedict XVI would “go to hell and be pursued by two big, gay and very active devils.”

Benedict is known for his vocal opposition to LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. Guzzanti was appearing at an anti-politics rally in Rome last July.

It is a criminal offense in Italy to “offend the honor” of the Pope or the Italian president, under a Fascist-era law.

The Rome city prosecutor, Giovanni Ferrara, asked Federal Justice Minister Angelino Alfano for permission to start criminal proceedings against Guzzanti. Ferrara said that Guzzanti’s comments went beyond satire.

“I decided not to authorize it, knowing well the stature and capacity of the Pope for forgiveness,” Justice Minister Angelino Alfano said Friday.
