The Democratic instinct to crush free speech is surpassed only its sister predisposition to crush religion. So it really is no surprise that Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey is suggesting that the IRS revisit the Catholic Church's tax-exempt status.

Bravo to freedom fighter Phyllis Chesler for her robust, intelligent and brave performance on Lou Dobbs this evening. In a face-off with Nation columnist John Nichols about whether the Fort Hood tragedy can be called “terrorism,” Chesler made the crucial points that Hasan was a jihadist, that there is an ideology of radical Islam that is at war with this nation, and that the U.S. Army simply has to become a “politically correct free zone” if it is to protect not only this country but also the lives of its own troops.

Chesler was also, as usual, on target by levelling criticism at President Obama for his failure to even mention the reality of Islamic jihad in his Fort Hood speech today. As she emphasized, it is crucial to name the enemy we are fighting

Westboro Baptist Church, a hate group that travels around the country holding anti-gay rallies, protested outside the school attended by President Obama's children on Monday morning.

The "church," run by Fred Phelps and composed largely of his extensive family, is known for staging its events for maximum publicity and controversy. In the past, members have demonstrated outside troops' funerals. Recently they have been targeting Jewish temples. Now they're aiming their vitriol at Washington-area schools -- including Sidwell Friends, where Malia and Sasha Obama are students.

A message on Westboro's website refers to the Obama children as "satanic spawn" of a "murderous bastard." Along with various schools, the church is also protesting outside the White House, the World War II memorial, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission field office.

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue.

"It's the respect it deserves, right there on the ground with my foot on top of it," Rachel Hockenbarger said. "It's not a flag that needs to be held up high and waved. The international symbol for distress is that you fly it upside down, so we fly it upside down outside our church in Topeka, Kansas, because our nation is in distress."

The New York Times reported on Saturday that the "Obama administration, leading Senate Democrats and a coalition of news organizations have reached tentative agreement on legislation providing greater protections against the fining or imprisonment of reporters who refuse to identify confidential sources." The "Free Flow of Information Act" would allow federal courts the power to stifle subpoenas for information from reporters or privileged "covered" persons if the judge determines the public interest is better served by protecting their source information.

By codifying privileged legal status for a press that already acts as if it is above the law, we open ourselves to a wide range of abuses, none of which will serve the citizen or the nation. The first amendment does not bestow special status for the press beyond the public's collective freedom of speech.

Every American is protected by the guarantees of the First Amendment, but protections for religious liberty and free expression apply only when government actions are involved — and therein is the rub for some of our fellow citizens.

In both instances, the concept that as citizens we are free to express ourselves as we see fit runs smack into the legal reality that private employers, associations, Internet companies and such aren’t restrained by First Amendment protections regarding religion, speech, press, assembly or petition.

Public officials, public schools and public agencies all must present such strong proof of significant public benefit or safety concerns before our First Amendment protections can legally be overridden.

But for now, although the First Amendment protects your right to speak in the marketplace of ideas from government interference, it doesn’t automatically shelter what you want to say at work or on the Web.

It was in 1964 that the police in Aden city turned their guns on the Brits soldiers and were 'put down' by 45 Commando and the Gordons. Yesterday 5 more young men, and probably more, were gunned down by a rogue policeman and Brown still waffles out his venal apologies to the Nation, and his supporters swallow it hook line and sinker. In N. Ireland the situation is as desperate as when I stood the barricades exactly 40 years ago, and everyone tells how much improved it all is.
Get real. The only thing that has happened is that far too many Brits have died, the taxpayer has forked out billions to immoral politicians, both here and abroad, bankers have got richer and politicians haven't the slightest notion of why they have got us into so much doodoo.

Controversial New Video of Obama’s Pastor

A new video of Jeremiah Wright has surfaced, showing Barack Obama's pastor of 20 years praising Marxism and discussing his ties to communists in El Salvador and Nicaragua and the Libyan government. Equally important, Wright is being introduced in the video by Robert W. McChesney, co-founder of Free Press, an organization which has come under scrutiny for its links to the Obama Administration and dedication to the transformation and control of the private media in the U.S.

He called America "land of the greed and home of the slave."

The McChesney introduction of Wright provides more insight into the political network, based largely in Chicago, that launched Obama's political career and still influences him.

clipper's remarks: The ambiguously worded United Nations Human Rights Council resolution could plausibly be read as encouraging or even obliging the U.S. to make it a crime to engage in hate speech, or, perhaps, in mere "negative racial and religious stereotyping." This despite decades of First Amendment case law protecting such speech.

To be sure, the provisions to which I refer were a compromise, stopping short of the flat ban on defamation of religion sought by Islamic nations, and they could also be construed more narrowly and innocuously. It all depends on who does the construing.

Is it "negative stereotyping" to say that the world's most dangerous terrorists are Islamists, for example? Many would say yes.

It was nice to hear Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton say on October 26, "I strongly disagree" with Islamic countries seeking to censor free speech worldwide by making defamation of religion a crime under international law.

But watch what the Obama administration does, not just what it says. I'm not talking about its attacks on Fox News. I'm talking about a little-publicized October 2 resolution in which Clinton's own State Department joined Islamic nations in adopting language all-too-friendly to censoring speech that some religions and races find offensive.
