Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner announced Tuesday that the state had realized letting poll workers baby-sit voting machines in their homes, offices, cars or garages without any supervision the night before they're used was, well, maybe not the best plan in the world.

Local officials had defended the practice after Brunner raised some questions about it, saying the only way to keep the machines safe from fraud was to, ahem, keep them hidden somewhere unofficial, where no one could see whether they were being tampered with.

Sale of bank data alarms Germany

Data protection officials in Germany have called for privacy laws to be tightened amid a scandal over illegal sales of personal data.

The officials say they were able to buy six million items of personal data on the internet, including bank account details and phone numbers.

Police snooping in the past makes the issue very sensitive in Germany

As you must realize, there aren't too many words with the versatility of "fuck", as in these examples describing situations such as:

Fraud: "I got fucked at the used car lot."

Dismay: "Aw fuck it."

Trouble: "I guess I'm really fucked now."

Aggression: "Don't fuck with me buddy."

Difficulty: "I don't understand this fucking question!"

Inquiry: "Who the fuck was that?"

Dissatisfaction: "I don't like what the fuck is going on here."

In Confidence: "He's a fuck off."

Dismissal: "Why don't you go outside and play 'hide and go fuck yourself?'"

I'm sure you can think of many more examples. With all of these multi-purpose applications, how can anyone be offended when you use the word? We say, use this unique, flexible word more often in your daily speech. It will identify the quality of your character immediately.

Say it loudly and proudly, "Fuck you!"

Being called a law that assures Obama a win in Ohio get a load of what the democrats in the Buckeye state have just done:

Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner on Wednesday issued a directive advising county elections boards that they must have procedures in place to allow voters who register to be immediately issued an absentee ballot. She said boards can delay voting if they have concerns over the validity of a registration.

Brunner said absentee ballots are verified once they are cast and counted after polls close Election Day.

..."The prospect of someone coming in with no ID and registering and voting is contrary to every sort of protection that legislators and lawmakers have built into this system for decades," said Kevin DeWine, a Republican lawmaker who is poised to take over the state party after the election. "The processes and the law and the systems in our 88 counties are not equipped to handle same-day registration."

Pen or Pin? Yeah right

clipper's remarks: My local supermarket has had a sign up for months letting shoppers know that from June 4th (yes I know its August). they can choose PEN or PIN when paying with credit or debit card. I've kept signing (PEN) up to this point in time. The funny thing is you cant make out my signature on the card but still that doesn't seem to bother anyone. I still get the goods EVERYWHERE.

Why Not Test the Phaistos Disc?

If there are suspicions that the renowned Phaistos Disc is fake, why not address them by determining its age? That was the excellent question raised by Lab readers in response to a post on the disc. The short answer is that the keepers of the disc — the Herakleion Archaeological Museum in Crete, where the purportedly ancient artifact was found a century ago — won’t allow it.

For a longer answer, I consulted Jerome M. Eisenberg, the editor-in-chief of Minerva and the author of the article in that archaeological journal questioning the disc’s authenticity. He provided more details, and also addressed other questions raised by Lab readers. He told me that he has been trying for many years to test the disk (as well as another artifact at the museum, the Archalochori Axe, which he considers suspicious):

Of all the statements on this case the most astounding is the official assertion that the SA80 is a weapon of worth. Just recently it has been reported for it's 240th modification. If whomever now is in possession of the useless piece of weaponry, here is a suggestion. Take it back to whomever sold it to you and demand a refund. It cannot be sold as it does not meet any criteria of the Sales of Goods Act as it is unfit for purpose.
I await with unbaited breath when the procurer's of this piece of rubbish will be prosecuted for fraud. But we all know that will never happen. Just like MP sending in true expense accounts?

Marine Jailed For Stealing Gun

A ROYAL Marine has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for stealing a gun from a nuclear submarine base.

John Hickman, 24, took the Browning 9mm automatic pistol when he was stationed at Faslane on the Clyde - home of Britain's Trident fleet.

A 600-rounds-a-minute SA80 assault rifle - accurate up to 400 metres - went missing from the base at the same time but has not been recovered.

Shane Brighton, of the Royal Institution for International Affairs at Chatham House, said: "The SA80 is an extremely effective assault rifle. It is built not only to kill people but to kill a lot of people effectively."

In 2004 (right before election time as usual) Alcee Hastings, just like this week in August 2008, warned government officals to be on the lookout for “official misconduct, deliberate fraud and an attempt to suppress voter turnout by unlawful means”, said Congressman Alcee Hastings.

The same old “Boy Who Cried Wolf” routine from 71 year old Alcee.

But in this election, the same ole scare tactic isn’t going to pass muster or work out very well for Hastings in 2008.

I'm on to you Hastings, so I say, "Let's look into lobbying Congress for monies to fund the construction of a retirement home for old and washed-up politicians"

U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, is alerting local black elected officials, and anyone else interested, to be on the lookout for attempts to suppress black voter turnout in the Aug. 26 primary and non-partisan elections.

"Recent history has taught us that there are still many in Florida who will do virtually anything to stop minorities and others from voting. As elected officials, it is our responsibility to be prepared to help our constituents if they fall victim to voter intimidation. We can hope for the best. But we also have to be prepared for the worst," Hastings wrote last week in a memo released Wednesday by his office.

Italy holds five on terror charge

Five North Africans have been arrested in Italy on charges of conspiring to commit acts of international terrorism.

Police in Bologna say they arrested four Tunisians and a Moroccan and are seeking a sixth man.

They are investigating an alleged international terrorist ring, which they say recruited suicide bombers for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The North Africans are also charged with fraud. They are alleged to have collected money from phoney car accident insurance claims to finance their operations.

They recruited and trained people willing to sacrifice their lives in terrorist attacks in war zones, the police said.

The alleged leader of the terrorist ring was a former mujahideen colonel, of unknown nationality, who had fought in Bosnia during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

Investigators had gathered information on the activities of the terrorist group through phone taps.

War Hero?

John McCain is running as a war hero.

There are just a few problems with that.

He's despised by fellow Vets, especially fellow POWs, not only for cooperating with the enemy, but also for blocking every effort to make sure all American POWs were returned after the war.

Interestingly enough, the other veteran who obstructed truth on the matter was John Kerry, the fake candidate and Skull and Bones member who ran against Bush in 2004 and stepped aside in spite of massive and obvious electoral fraud in Ohio.
