Russia officially recognized South Ossetia, along with breakaway Abkhazia, as independent countries on Tuesday.

TSKHINVALI, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - A Georgian unmanned reconnaissance plane was shot down early on Thursday over the South Ossetian capital, a local Interior Ministry official said.

"A Georgian drone was flying from south to north over Tskhinvali at 00.10 Moscow time (20.10 GMT). South Ossetian military units opened fire at the UAV and shot it down," said acting Interior Minister Mikhail Mindzayev.

He also said several illegal armed groups were operating near the capital under orders from Georgian authorities to conduct subversive activities and terrorist acts.

"To prevent these activities, South Ossetian security-related forces, including police, are forming special counter-terrorist units," Mindzayev said.

On Wednesday, Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of Russia's General Staff, said a Georgian reconnaissance drone made a flight at 3.15 p.m. Moscow time [11.15 GMT] over South Ossetia, spying on places of deployment and movement routes of Russian military detachments

So you think your level 70 paladin is pretty boss? Well just think about how much time you spend in World of Warcraft simply running around. These guys set up a simulation that requires one to actually run in order to keep their character going. Check it out:

The awesome guys in this video added a treadmill to their normal joystick and keyboard set-up. Never before have a bike tire and a mouse pad been used to propel a Night Elf.

Personally I was not the least bit surprised by the results. While most things in video games try to replicate real life (which makes them more immersive), the running and flying systems are really just there to move the game along. In the middle ages, people were typically born and then died within a fifty mile area. Clearly that won’t cut it for WoW, a game where you sometimes have to travel to other worlds.

Many biologists thought that the bats, like their avian counterparts, might be falling victim to the fast-spinning turbine blades. But an examination of 188 hoary and silver-haired bats killed at a wind farm in southwestern Alberta in Canada between July and September in 2007 showed that nearly half showed no external injuries–as would be expected if the giant blades had smashed the flying mammals to the ground.

While she was "flying" down the road yesterday, a woman passed over a bridge only to find a cop with a radar gun on the other side lying in wait.

The cop pulled her over, walked up to the car, with that classic patronizing smirk we all know and love, asked, "What's your hurry?"

To which she replied, "I'm late for work."

"Oh yeah," said the cop, "what do you do?"

I'm a rectum stretcher," she responded.

The cop stammered, "A what? A rectum stretcher?

And just what does a rectum stretcher do?"

"Well," she said, "I start by inserting one finger, then work my way up to two fingers, then three, then four, then with my whole hand in. I work from side to side until I can get both hands in, and then I slowly but surely stretch it, until it's about 6 feet wide."

Rice Criticizes Israeli Checkpoints and Travel Restrictions

On her final Middle East tour as Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice used the occasion to criticize Israeli checkpoints and restrictions on travel for Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. When asked about them, she told reporters that “obviously there’s more that needs to be done.” At the start of her two-day tour, she praised the release of 198 Palestinian political prisoners on the eve of her visit. Rice is scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah today before flying back to Washington.

Tuskegee Airman died amid plans to immortalize him

Baugh and the other Tuskegee Airmen helped conquer Axis forces abroad, but their greatest victory may have been against bigotry and ignorance at home. Call them a squadron that ushered in not only the desegregation of the armed forces by President Harry S. Truman but the civil-rights movement that followed.

Gilding the lily is nothing new to politics. From the 1840s when William Henry Harrison claimed to have been born in a log cabin (it was actually a Virginia plantation) to Ronald Reagan’s reminiscing about flying over Germany in World War II (he did, but only in a movie), politicians have taken perfectly good stories and embellished them.

This campaign is no exception.

Such exaggerations may simply be the product of a faulty memory or a desire to be “better” than one is in a political culture that requires larger-than-life idols. But with the advent of the fact-checking obsessed blogosphere – and a media racing to keep up – such self-aggrandizement doesn’t last as long as it once did.

“But now there are too many professional and amateur fact-checkers,” he says. “And there are hundreds if not thousands of bloggers who have detailed knowledge on specialized information, so you really can’t get away with stretching the truth anymore.”

In the latest in the seemingly never-ending series of announcements by airlines on the new fees they are levying on customers, Delta said yesterday that it will now charge people $50 each way to check a second bag on domestic flights, double the current $25

Starting Aug. 1, US Airways will even start charging passengers $2 for a Coke or a bottle of water

What does strike me in relation to the constant stream of new fees by the airlines is the increasingly negative reaction of people who fly regularly. Rather than becoming inured to all the extra fees, passengers are becoming more and more incensed. Just take a look at a sample of comments posted by readers of the Consumerist blog in reaction to the latest Delta announcement:

In all seriousness, what can airline passengers do in reaction to all the fees? Are there any avenues left, short of not flying?

Fish Tale Has DNA Hook: Students Find Bad Labels

Many New York sushi restaurants and seafood markets are playing a game of bait and switch, say two high school students turned high-tech sleuths.

In a tale of teenagers, sushi and science, Kate Stoeckle and Louisa Strauss, who graduated this year from the Trinity School in Manhattan, took on a freelance science project in which they checked 60 samples of seafood using a simplified genetic fingerprinting technique to see whether the fish New Yorkers buy is what they think they are getting.

They found that one-fourth of the fish samples with identifiable DNA were mislabeled. A piece of sushi sold as the luxury treat white tuna turned out to be Mozambique tilapia, a much cheaper fish that is often raised by farming. Roe supposedly from flying fish was actually from smelt. Seven of nine samples that were called red snapper were mislabeled, and they turned out to be anything from Atlantic cod to Acadian redfish, an endangered species.
