The white man's dead forget the country of their birth when they go to walk among the stars. Our dead never forget this beautiful earth, for it is the mother of the red man. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters; the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony, and man --- all belong to the same family.

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

I am a savage and do not understand any other way. I have seen a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, left by the white man who shot them from a passing train. The combined effect of low temperatures and rain has presented Britain's invertebrates with a double whammy. As insects are cold-blooded they need the warmth of the sun to raise their body temperatures in the morning and allow their muscles to work. A cool day means this cannot happen and they are unable to forage for food, such as nectar from flowers and plants, or other smaller insects as prey – and a succession of such days can be fatal.

Scientists have found that bumblebees learn from their "near-death" encounters with crab spiders and adapt their future foraging strategies.

Bumblebee vs Robotic Crab Spider

They watched real bees in an artificial meadow - containing yellow "flowers" and robotic crab spiders.

Bees that had been "captured" spent longer inspecting flowers during subsequent foraging trips.

They may outwit the spiders - but at the expense of valuable foraging time, Current Biology reports.

Crab spiders lie in wait on flowers, ready to ambush their "most prized prey" - the bumblebee.

This cryptic predator has an amazing ability to change its colour to closely match the flower it is lurking on.

Scientists wanted to know if bumblebees adapt their foraging behaviour after encountering a crab spider.

Fairy lights can be enhanced with feathers, paper, cardboard cones or...egg carton cups! These recycled cardboard cups offer an unusual texture and soft colors that, with minimal skills, can be turned into a vine of light-emitting morning glory. For this project, Use LED lights only.

Save different colored egg cartons. With a pair of sturdy scissors, cut away excess cardboard surrounding the cup strips. Then cut out each separate cup. With shorter scissors, trim the edges of each cup to form flower petals.

Starting at the cup opening, make a short slit into each side of the cup. Then simply insert one LED bulb into each "flower". Using a one-hole paper punch, make decorative holes on the flowers. See photos for pattern ideas, or invent your own!

Hang your fairy lights in a dark area, over a mirror or above a bed for a cozy, warm effect.
