This just in: Hurricane of delicious irony slams Republican National Convention, flooding the streets of Minneapolis/St. Paul with rivers of savage hypocrisy as levees of evangelical denial and sexual confusion overflow into the streets, leaving stunned party members scrambling in vain for shaky moral high ground.

Yes, the rumors are true. The cosmic votes have all been tallied, and I do believe we can now say, with some measure of happy certainty, that God appears to be just as sick-to-death of the Republican Party as the rest of us.

Let's imagine the hot 'n' febrile reaction if, say, an enormous storm had come thundering through Denver during DNC '08, if some gale force winds or bowel-shaking rainfall had shut the city down, prophetically timing itself just right to thwart the Democratic Party's biggest party and stop Barack Obama from making all sorts of stunning history as he delivered his record-breaking speech to a wary and Bush-ravaged nation.

To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks."

But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.

Louisiana Governor Says 'A Lot More Work Ahead' After Gustav, New Orleans Largely Spared

Though New Orleans was spared the devastating damage many feared Hurricane Gustav could unleash, the Louisiana governor warned Tuesday that the state had still sustained a significant hit.

Gov. Bobby Jindal told reporters that the most serious threats remained strong downpours and the possibility of tornados.

"The greatest dangers are heavy rains," Jindal said. "Many of us are relieved ... We didn't have widespread flooding. But this is still a very, very serious storm that has caused major, major damage in our state."

He said there have been unconfirmed reports that parts of northern Louisiana had been badly battered, and there was a lot of work still to be done.

Tropical Storm Fay was a "wake-up call" for many counties throughout Florida on how to deal with future storms and hurricanes. ("Pay for '75-year event' after what Fay dumped," Wednesday).

While the impact from Fay's historic flooding and hurricane-force winds is not yet fully realized, it is evident that large numbers of people will be displaced. One would think, following Florida's 2004 and 2005 deadly hurricane seasons and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, that the Federal Emergency Management Agency would be prepared to provide for our nation's emergency housing needs. Unfortunately, it isn't, and FEMA has not shown that it is serious about addressing the problem.

Although New Orleans escaped serious damage from Hurricane Gustav on Monday morning, winds of the Category 2 storm pushed a 12-foot storm surge into the Industrial Canal, sending waves sloshing over the western wall and triggering minor flooding in the Upper 9th Ward.

Gustav's landing point was 72 miles away near Cocodrie, a low-lying fishing community in Cajun country. Cocodrie is about 20 miles from Port Fourchon, a vital hub in the energy industry where huge amounts of oil and gas are sent inward via pipelines to refineries. There had been fears of extensive damage.

By mid morning, water was splashing for several hundred yards over the western side of the Industrial Canal's floodwall near North Claiborne Avenue, said Jerry Sneed, New Orleans' director of homeland security and emergency preparedness.

W5 is a nebula, a giant cloud of gas roughly 6000 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It’s enormous, spanning about 2 x 1.5 degrees of the sky (15 times the size of the full Moon on the sky), and is actively cranking out stars. The valentine-shape is actually an enormous cavern, a hollow carved out of the gas by the winds and fierce ultraviolet light flooding out from massive young stars in its… well, its heart. It’s like these stars are blowing a vast bubble in the middle of the cloud.

The stars doing the work can be seen in the image; the bright blue ones are the culprits. Mind you, this is an infrared false-color image; blue is not really blue, it’s actually light at 3.6 microns, more than four times the wavelength of visible light.

Fay Stalls

The National Hurricane Center's projected path of movement for Tropical Storm Fay now includes a fourth Florida landfall as it continues to dump "historic" amounts of rain on parts of Central Florida.

"Fay will be with us for the next 48 hours at least," Wilson said. "Thankfully, by Friday morning, it should be (located) just to the north of Ocala and on its way out of Florida. But if (Fay) does take this path into the Gulf of Mexico it would (make) its fourth landfall into Florida."

Fay's third landfall Thursday will again deliver heavy rain and high winds to Central Florida counties, Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells said.

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Homeowners in a Tropical Storm Fay-flooded community were being warned of an alligator swimming in their streets and near homes as record-breaking rain continued to fall Thursday.

"We have removed alligators, we have removed snakes and we've removed all kinds of wildlife," Brevard EOC Director Bob Lay said. "Our animal services and enforcement officers have been doing this all over the county for the last three days."

Some Local 6 viewers sent images of alligators in their neighborhoods -- including one gator captured by animal services.

The National Guard has been called to Melbourne to help with voluntary evacuations.

Record-Breaking Rain Reported

Meanwhile, the city of Melbourne shattered a 50-year-old rainfall record after the system dumped hours of rain in the area.

The city received more than 11 inches of rain in a 24-hour period.

It’s a scramble for the spoils of global warming as the rapid melting of Arctic sea ice is opening access to previously unreachable deposits of oil and gas, setting off a race by northern nations - including the United States, Canada and Russia - to claim them.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed last month what the oil industry had long suspected when the agency released an estimate that the area north of the Arctic Circle may hold as much as 90 billion barrels of oil and 1,669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, or roughly 13 percent of the world’s total undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas.

The dash to stake out territory across the Arctic has accelerated since Russia sent one of its submarines last August to plant the country’s flag on the sea floor beneath the North Pole, provoking an outcry by other nations that viewed it as an unauthorized land grab.
