More than a dozen people said they saw it -- the big bright lights in the January skies over Stephenville, Texas. It was unlike anything they'd seen before.

The lights reconfigured into different formations several times, he said.

"Then they burst into a flame, a very unusual bright white flame," he said. "Two or three seconds of that, and then it simply disappeared."

Former military air traffic controller Paul Colcleasure said he also saw something remarkable that night.

"I honestly don't know what to think it was. I know what it wasn't," he said. "I've seen pretty much every military aircraft you can think of in the dark, and these lights were -- just the scale of the lights, the size -- not anything I can conceptualize."

In the nine months since, those lights still have not been identified.

The annual Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics has named Nokia as the most eco-friendly electronic brand.

In the ninth edition of its guide, Greenpeace has declared that Nokia is a step ahead of other well-known manufacturers like Samsung and Nintendo.

Nokia managed to get a high score of seven out of ten possible points, because of its improved take-back practices in India, toxic chemical issues, utilizing models free of PVC and aiming to have all new models free of brominated flame retardants and antimony trioxide by the end of 2009, reports Environmental News Network.

Second in the list of greener electronics was Samsung with 5.7 points, because of the increased energy-efficiency of its products.

It also scores well on its use of recycled plastic, at 16.1 percent, though only 0.2 percent is post-consumer plastic, with a goal to increase to 25 percent by 2008.

Vatican City, Oct 2, 2008 / 10:24 am (CNA).- Bishops and other clergy from Kazakhstan and Central Asia, a region with few Catholics, met with Pope Benedict this morning at the Vatican. The Holy Father encouraged the prelates to "keep the flame of faith alive among the Christian people" and spoke about the dangers of religious fundamentalism.

The solution Pope Benedict pointed to is to fight terrorism and fundamentalism with the rule of law. "However," he warned, "the force of law must never itself become iniquity, nor can the free exercise of religion be limited, because freely to profess one's faith is a fundamental and universally-recognized human right."

"A person may open to the faith after mature and responsible reflection, and must be able freely to realize that intimate aspiration. This benefits not only the individual, but all society, because the faithful observance of divine precepts helps to build a more just and united form of coexistence."

Astrology and the many faces of Vesta

The symbol for Vesta, depicting an oven or an altar carrying a flame, was drawn in multiple ways in astronomical publications. These are two representative versions.

In 1973, Eleanor Bach published "Ephemerides of the asteroids: Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, 1900-2000" for an astrological audience. To my knowledge, this was the beginning of the astrological interest in the asteroids, especially these first four. Bach used a simplified symbol for Vesta that has since become the most widely-used one

(Puerto Rican annatto oil)

Achiote oil is used around the Caribbean to add a yellowish-orange color to dishes, especially arroz con pollo. It is known as rou-cou or huile de rou-cou in the French Caribbean.

Makes about 2 cups

Annatto seeds -- 1 cup
Vegetable oil -- 2 cups

Method

Mix the annatto seeds and oil together in a small saucepan. Heat over medium flame until the seeds start to bubble. Reduce heat to very low and let the seeds infuse in the oil for 5-10 minutes, or until the oil takes on a deep reddish-orange color.
Cool, strain and store in a cool place.

OUTSIDE his village in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, Sudarshan Dhrube inspects a field of jatropha, planted in rust-red soils, heavy with iron. His village is growing the shrub under the watchful eye of D1-BP Fuel Crops, a joint venture between D1 Oils, a British biofuels firm, and BP, an energy giant. D1-BP has promised to pay 6.50 rupees (14 cents) for every kilogram of the black seeds found inside the shrub’s fruit. Crushed, these seeds yield a viscous oil that burns with a clear, clean flame. The oil can run a generator or a pump. Or it can be refined into biodiesel that can fuel tractors, trucks or trains.

By 2017 it aims to meet 20% of India’s diesel demand with fuel derived from plants rather than fossils.

India also makes bioethanol from molasses left over from refining sugarcane.

A campaign group supported by three chemical manufacturers is questioning whether politicians should ban hazardous substances on the basis of the precautionary principle in the face of scientific assessment that fails to identify any potential risk for humans.

The official launch of the REACHforLIFE campaign on 10 September in Brussels saw two US and an Israeli company attempt to initiate a debate on the role of scientific risk assessments in the EU's chemicals policy.

Presenting their campaign objectives, spokesperson Willem Hofland called for science-based policymaking, asking the EU to respect the assessments of its own scientific committees. Indeed, the three campaigners Albemarle, Chemtura and ICL-IP are using the recent (as of 1 August) EU-wide ban of Deca-BDE, a brominated flame retardant, from electronic appliances as an example of how "decision-makers are putting consumers in danger through bans of safe chemicals".

Morose that there hasn't been another terrorist attack on American soil for seven long years, liberals were ecstatic when Hurricane Gustav was headed toward New Orleans during the Republican National Convention last week. The networks gave the hurricane plenty of breaking-news coverage -- but unfortunately it was Hurricane Katrina from 2005 they were covering.

There wasn't a major al-Qaida attack in 2003. Nor in 2004, 2005, 2006 or 2007. Manifestly, liberals thought there would be: They announced a standard of success that they expected Bush to fail.

If Bush's only concern were about his approval ratings, like a certain impeached president I could name, he would not have fought for the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq. He would not have resisted the howling ninnies demanding that we withdraw from Iraq, year after year.

By liberals' own standard, Bush's war on terrorism has been a smashing, unimaginable success.

While there's life there is hope

Big questions still hang over CCS technology overall

This mini power plant is a pilot project for carbon capture and storage (CCS) - the first coal-fired plant in the world ready to capture and store its own CO2 emissions.

A cloud of pure oxygen will be breathed into the boiler. The flame will be lit. Then a cloud of powdered lignite will be injected.

The outcome will be heat, water vapour, impurities, nine tonnes of CO2 an hour, and a landmark in clean technology.

Because the CO2 will then be separated, squashed to one 500th of its original volume and squeezed into a cylinder ready to be transported to a gas field and forced 1,000m below the surface into porous rock

the problem is that the exact cost of large-scale CCS is unknown.

The latest estimates suggest CCS power will cost roughly the same as wind power - maybe 50% more than it does at the moment.

The real test of CCS, though, is not in Europe.
