This is the time of year to find a dark place and behold our very own galaxy, the Milky Way, meandering across the midnight sky. Can't find a dark place? Here's one:

This is no ordinary picture of the Milky Way; it's a doorway. Just knock and you'll be wafted away to a beach in the south of France with a dizzyingly beautiful galaxy arcing overhead. Photographer Laurent Laveder explains: "Two nights ago, I used a fisheye lens to take 16 individual pictures covering the entire sky. I then combined them to produce a Quicktime Virtual Reality view of the Milky Way."

Tip: In the VR environment, look up and spin the Milky Way. You can make your own star trails. Don't go overboard, though; it can be disturbingly realistic.

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II in Russia & Kazakhstan

I've just reached home in Malaysia, after driving 17,000 km over 65 days in a 4x4 Range Rover, starting from London and passing through Holland, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Laos and Thailand.

I brought along a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II with a 16-35, a 24-70, a 70-200 and a 15mm Fisheye

here's a view of the Kremlin that you will see across the Moskova River if you enter Moscow by driving in from the East as I did

the "Lollypop" Cathedral, the signature image of Moscow, otherwise known as the Cathedral of the Intercession or Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed.

there were many mosques too, especially in Kazakhstan

Explanation: Dust from curious near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon seems to fall from the constellation Gemini in this fisheye skyview. The composite image was recorded over four December nights (12-15) just last year from Ludanyhalaszi, Hungary. Of course, the streaks are meteor trails from the annual Geminids meteor shower. The work of astronomer Erno Berko, the finished picture combines 113 different frames and captures 123 separate meteors. The Geminids is one of the northern skies most reliably performing meteor showers and did not disappoint last year. Under good conditions some skywatchers reported well over 100 meteors per hour near the December 14/15 peak for the Geminids in 2007. Look up tonight and you might see the 2008 Quadrantids.

clipper's remarks: If you know your lake sometimes the easiest thing to do is to idle in familiar places and find baitfish and bass nearby. The hardest thing in vertical fishing is to stay on top of the fish while trolling around and fishing. Nothing can be more frustrating than to find a good school of fish and catch a couple and have them just disappear.

I’ve learned a lot the last month by looking at schools of fish and shad with the side imaging, reading the article fisheye posted, and doing the balloon experiment that Randy and DFW Mike suggested.

I’d like to share what I’ve learned and hopefully put it into words that anybody can understand. At one time I thought you needed to be a rocket scientist to really understand your electronics but, trust me, anybody can understand it!

Pro Optic 0.42x Semi-Fish-eye Auxillary Lens for 52mm Filter Threaded Lenses.

We tried the 0.42X Pro-Optic converter marketed by Adorama (www.adorama.com), $39.95 including case and one mounting ring. We mounted it on a 28-70mm f/4 Pentax FA zoom with a Pentax ZX-5n body, and compared results with a real fisheye, Pentax's very groovy 17-28mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom fisheye.

With the Pro-Optic converter in place, we were able to dial the 28-70mm zoom down to a point (around 38mm) where a curvaceous fisheye image filled the frame, corner to corner. (Auto focus and auto exposure worked without a hitch.) Zooming to a shorter focal length resulted in vignetting in the corners.
