The release of Microsoft Security Essentials has changed the landscape of antivirus software. We've finally got a completely free application that protects against viruses, spyware, and other malware—without killing system performance like some of the "suites" tend to do. In my personal experience, it barely slows down the machine and rarely affects my work—and during a deliberate attempt to download some viruses (for testing purposes), it immediately found and blocked them from doing anything.

Living without antivirus software

Ok, I'll admit it. I've been living dangerously for the last several years.

To be blunt: I refuse to install any kind of antivirus or personal firewall software on most of my computers. This includes a Windows XP Home system that was used by my children as a web surfing / email / game system. I've suffered zero infections during this time. (The only time I ever suffered a malware infection was before, when I did rely on Norton Antivirus to protect the kids' computer.)

Why do I refuse to use these massively popular products? Simple. I am convinced that they cause more harm than good, and that they foster a false sense of security - leading users to engage in riskier behavior. Further, antivirus software is almost always behind the curve - by definition, the antivirus people are playing catch-up with the malware writers. It's a good living for them, but I choose not to contribute to it.

His emails started disappearing as though they were being sifted remotely. 'I believe this will have been done by a state-sponsored agency and not by an amateur acting singly,' he said.

Dr Kelly's death may have been linked to the secret world of germ warfare research.

Until his death Dr Kelly was privy to some of the state's most sensitive information and worked closely with the intelligence services of all the major industrialised countries.

The death of Government scientist David Kelly returned to haunt Labour today as a group of doctors announced that they were mounting a legal challenge to overturn the finding of suicide.

Dr Kelly's body was found six years ago this week in woods close to his Oxfordshire home, shortly after he was exposed as the source of a BBC news report questioning the grounds for war in Iraq.

The only official verdict has come from the Hutton Inquiry, commissioned by Tony Blair, which concluded that Dr Kelly, 59, died from loss of blood after cutting his wrist with a blunt gardening knife.

Critics regarded the report as a 'whitewash', and Mr Blair remains acutely sensitive to the accusation that he has 'blood on his hands' over the scientist's death.

'We reject haemorrhage as the cause of death and see no contrary opinion which would stand its ground. I think it is highly likely he was assassinated.'

Even though I know that they will never understand the tech speak, I feel it is my duty to tell it to as many as who will listen. I have good security, but some people actually believe that their Windows Defender and Firewall will do the job. WRONG !! The real killer about facebook is they are now using hi tech backdoor Trojan viruses and worms now. Brothers & sisters if you have enough money to buy and use a PC, you had better be protecting it. $50 a year is a lot cheaper than having to have it reconditioned or relaced, and with the hi-jacking you're gonna lose your privacy as well. I know that it seems like a hassle to have to re-enter your credit card info and other stuff (passwords etc),but I only store mine in my Norton toolbar, and no one can get in but me. More to follow

According to unified threat management specialist Fortinet Facebook users had better start paying attention to the postings that appear on their message wall within the popular social networking site. It appears that spammers are moving away from targeting third party applications, as evidenced in the recent 'Secret Crush' case, and are instead turning their attentions to posting deceptive message containing links to spam sites on the wall instead.

Fortinet has also published the findings of its March malware report, and this makes the usual somber reading it has to be said. It reveals that Sunday has become a spike day for malware activity, with four consecutive Sundays seeing an increase in activity that has pushed the Pushdo.EV Trojan to the top of the malware tree with 13.5 percent of all activity for the month. It achieved this by sending out animated e-cards that promised recipients pictures of naked ladies.

SEATTLE - Microsoft plans to release a beta test of its free computer security program next week and is on track to launch a finished product in the fall.

Microsoft will can its Windows Live OneCare when the full version of its new security freebie ships.

Microsoft also maintains a database of trusted software sources, so the tool won't accidentally block items like Google's web browser toolbar, she said.

The security software will come as a free download, but it won't be part of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, which goes on sale in October. Bundling the two could be fodder for antitrust complaints.

"Referring to Microsoft's basic antivirus and antispyware product as an essential security solution is misleading," said Dave Cole, a senior director at Symantec.

He said PC users need the extra firewall protection, spam fighters and other features that come with subscription security programs.

So far the reviews are favorable but I would like more than one month experience to decide.

XP is set up just about perfectly for me and I am not eager to leave it.
