Trick or Tweet? Malware Abundant in Twitter URLs

As many as one in every 500 web addresses posted on Twitter lead to sites hosting malware, according to researchers at Kaspersky Labs who have deployed a tool that examines URLs circulating in tweets.

The spread of malware is aided by the popular use of shortened URLs on Twitter, which generally hide the real website address from users before they click on a link, preventing them from self-filtering links that appear to be dodgy.

Kaspersky, an anti-virus and computer-security firm based in Moscow, created a tool called Krab Krawler, which extracts URLs from millions of tweets a day. The tools expands shortened URLs to examine words in the web address for those matching known malware sites. For unknown sites, Kaspersky visits the web page to determine if it’s hosting malicious code that could infect visitors.

Ever wonder how tomorrow’s bathrooms would look like? Will they be radically different from the ones we have today? What technologies would these futuristic bathrooms incorporate?

The first three are via Yanko Design, a terrific blog that features new concepts in design.

There is a good chance that water might become a precious commodity in the future. Designer Jang Woo-seok keeps this mind while designing his concept bathroom which cleverly reuses the water drained from the sink for flushing the toilet.

Here is another concept by designer Young Sang Eun that lays emphasis on hygiene. What is special about this design is that on one side it features a urinal and the other a sit-down commode. With the flip of a switch the design is capable of swiveling around. It self-sanitizes using Steam and UV. No more dirty toilet seats.

Using a natural filtering principle called phyto-purification, the bathroom becomes a mini-eco-system by recycling and regenerating the wastewater.

On first meeting, there is little evidence of the internal struggle Chris Goodchild faces daily as someone living with Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism.

"Often we want to scream and shout, but most of us do so internally. The way we cope is to withdraw."

"We experience life with great intensity and have a very poor filtering system.

"We can get bombarded with stimulation and information and can become easily confused and overwhelmed."

For years he struggled with depression and anxiety as he tried to conceal his autistic traits behind a façade of learnt, socially-acceptable behaviour.

Neither his adoptive parents nor his teachers realised what was wrong and at 15, he left with no qualifications and started on a downward spiral of depression, ending up in a psychiatric hospital for a year on anti-psychotic medication.

When he was 20, he traced his natural father and was shocked to discover he shared what he later recognised, were autistic traits.

Scientists believe they have located a new brain area essential for good memory - the "irrelevance filter".

Memory capacity may be linked to filtering out irrelevant information

People who are good at remembering things, even with distractions, have more activity in the basal ganglia on brain scans, the Swedish team found.

The work in Nature Neuroscience could help explain why some people are better at remembering things than others.

Clinically, it could also aid the understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The ability to hold information in the mind so that it is immediately accessible is known as working memory.

We use working memory all of the time - for example, when doing a simple maths calculation in our head or recalling a telephone number.

There will be many brain regions that filter irrelevant information, so it is too early to tell if these findings will have a bearing on conditions such as ADHD

Unfortunately, Americans looking for an opportunity to volunteer may get something they weren’t expecting.

By typing “ACORN” into the search field entitled “What interests you” at Serve.gov, you’re transported to allforgood.org where you can choose from a list of volunteer opportunities, including “healthcare activist.”

So after they assist you in procuring housing for your brothel of underage girls, ACORN can also assist you in skirting your taxes, in keeping with the law of probability.

Serve.gov is just one of many projects managed by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency which oversees various government service agencies, including Americorps, the outfit at the center of the . . .

For the most part, I can make the analogy to other media and decide that, if we are not willing to eliminate books and libraries because they may contain "dangerous" ideas, why would we attempt to keep young people from the internet and the world wide web? Obviously, however, we do attempt to "protect" young people from much that is available in traditional print media, and various types of filtering software are now available to "protect" young people in the electronic world as well.

Ironically, some of the most powerful and positive learning sites (according to my value system, of course) are filtered out using such software. For example, CyberPatrol blocks access to the Ontario Religious Tolerance Site because it includes Wicca among its 62 religious and ethical systems. This site also includes information of abortion, cults, the death penalty, and satanism.

‘Anonymous’ Declares War on Australia Over Internet Filtering

“Anonymous” has struck again — this time declaring war on Australia.

Hackers identifying themselves as “Anonymous” launched a denial-of-service attack Wednesday against a web site for Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to protest a government proposal to filter internet content, according to the Australian Associated Press.

The hackers also targeted a web site belonging to the Australian Communications and Media Authority and planned to attack a web site for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy as well.

According to a message posted by the purported hacker on a different web site, the government proposal to introduce a mandatory internet filtering plan would amount to China-like censorship.

“Not only will your rights be at stake, our internet speeds will slow down by 70 percent, be mandatory for all Aussies and will not protect us from evil AT ALL.”
