A modified food starch produced from corn by Grain Processing Corporation. It forms clear, flexible films without requiring hydration or cooking. Products thickened with Pure-Cote dry into a crispy "glass" at room temperature.

[edit] Uses

Alinea uses Pure Cote mixed with fresh pineapple juice to make "pineapple sheets". The mixture is dried on acetate sheets at room temperature until pliable. The sheets are then separated from the acetate, cut into individual portions and shaped as desired. Finally, the pieces are dried to a crisp texture using a food dehydrator.

The typewriter symbolized the golden age of writing in the last century. It not only helped produce great literature, but often became part of the story itself.

Redolent of Parisian garrets on the left bank of the Seine, with writers like Joyce, Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the humble typewriter helped produce great literature. Invented in the 19th Century, it dominated the writing scene of the last century, but was made obsolete by the advent of word processors and computers.

A large grid seen rotating at a certain speed will appear to group itself into smaller grids, spinning independently.

You are trying to capture a motion that is too fast for the framerate you’re using. In the case of a spinning wheel, what happens is that the wheel might turn, for example, 350 degrees between two frames but your eyes interpret it as -10 degrees. A similar thing happens with your grid. At the periphery, the lines move by more than one grid cell between two frames and the resulting visible motion is “snapped” to the smallest possible motion. The correct way to prevent such artifacts is to make sure that the shutter of the camera is open during the full interval between two frames, so that motion that is too fast gets blurred.

Bruce Lee is a national hero in China for the way he embodies Chinese pride and nationalism in his movies. Yet many in mainland China missed him the first time around – in the early 1970s – because movies such as Enter the Dragon and Fists of Fury were banned by Chairman Mao Zedong's Communist government as spiritual pollution andrightist sentimentality.

'Emily' will set a new precedent for photo-realistic characters in video games and films, says her creator, Image Metrics

Extraordinarily lifelike characters are to begin appearing in films and computer games thanks to a new type of animation technology.

Emily - the woman in the above animation - was produced using a new modelling technology that enables the most minute details of a facial expression to be captured and recreated.

She is considered to be one of the first animations to have overleapt a long-standing barrier known as 'uncanny valley' - which refers to the perception that animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness.

Researchers at a Californian company which makes computer-generated imagery for Hollywood films started with a video of an employee talking. They then broke down down the facial movements down into dozens of smaller movements, each of which was given a 'control system'.

US researchers have developed ultrathin films that when sandwiched together form a superconductor, an advance that could lead to a new class of fast, power-saving electronics.

The films can be used at relatively high temperatures for superconductors, making them easier to handle and produce, they say.

"What we have done is we have put together two materials, neither of which is a superconductor, and we found their interface - where they touch - is superconducting," says physicist Dr Ivan Bozovic of the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.

"This superconducting layer is extremely thin. It is thinner than 1 nanometere, which is 1 billionth of a metre," says Bozovic,

superconductors are useful because they are extremely efficient at conducting electricity.

If cooled to the material's critical operating temperature, they have no resistance to the flow of electrical current, unlike ordinary electrical wires, which can eventually overheat.

After being contacted by a number of people whose opinions I respect and after reviewing Obsession with their criticisms and concerns in mind, I have asked the film makers to remove my endorsement from the Obsession website and from any future promotional materials. While I remain committed to the film’s essential message — that the hate-mongering promoted by radical Islamism presents a real threat to western values of tolerance and pluralism — I also appreciate that the goal of co-existence and tolerance is not being served by films like Obsession.

Researchers have demonstrated a flexible television screen which could result in people folding up their computer and putting it in their pocket.

The design could be used for television and posters, as well as computers, while it could also pave the way for the development of newspaper display technology which would allow readers to upload daily news to an easy-to-carry display contraption.

It is all organic, flexible and transparent with an extremely low energy requirement, while it has an almost unlimited viewing angle and high efficiency.

There is no need for a backlight and response times are up to 10 times fast than LCDs (liquid crystal displays), meaning ultra-smooth motion without blurring.

Moving images on posters, seen in films such as Minority Report could also be a possibility, as well as cereal boxes with talking images.
