CAIRO — Actress Lucy Liu, who has produced a film about children sold into the sex trade in Cambodia, says the fight against human trafficking will be long.

That assessment rings true in the Middle East, where stigma in conservative societies and a lack of data have frustrated activists' efforts. Highlighting those challenges, organizers of several UNICEF-funded programs Liu visited in Egypt did not even want to make details of their efforts public out of fear doing so would stir up controversy and pressure from conservatives.

In Egypt, the sex trade is often hidden under the guise of temporary marriages sanctioned by some religious figures and local authorities. Under these marriages, hundreds of underage girls in rural Egypt are essentially sold by their families for large sums to wealthy visitors from Gulf nations.

Egypt recently passed its first child protection law, which criminalized trafficking and raised the age of marriage to 18.

Angry Muslims stop filming of Ayaan movie

The filming of the life of Ayaan Hirsi Ali in Kenya has been stopped after unrest in the African country. Parts of the script in which Islam is criticized were leaked.

Commissioned by the Dutch broadcaster VPRO, IDTV is working on a biography about a Somali woman whose life closely resembles that of former politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A quote from the script was published in the Muslim magazine The Friday Bulletin [pdf]. In this scene “Ayaan” strikes her mother around the ears with a Koran and exclaims that she will wipe her behind with it.

Imams responded angrily and said that they perceive the filming as an insult to all Kenyan Muslims.

the Kenyan casting agency that IDTV had involved, does not want to cooperate [pdf] any further on the film after all the criticism. The film production company does not know how to proceed with the project, a spokesman said. The company in any case will not return to Kenya.

Navy Ships Repel Bacteria, Thanks to Shark Skin

Ever wonder how sharks stay so squeaky clean, while whales and other sea creatures attract barnacles and other critters? That smooth skin inspired Sharklet Technologies, which based a new bacteria-busting film on it. And the Navy’s going to put it on their boats.

Researchers have been designing products inspired by or flat-out aping mother nature for years, a process called biomimicry. Sharklet Technologies is the latest to employ biomimicry, having studied the pattern of shark skin and printed it on a thin film in order to repel smaller bugs—bacteria.

Popular Science notes that the film, which is covered with microscopic diamond-shaped bumps, is the first “surface topography” proven to keep the bugs at bay. In tests in a California hospital, for three weeks the plastic sheeting’s surface prevented dangerous microorganisms, such as E. coli and Staphylococcus A, from establishing colonies large enough to infect humans.

The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, US space agency NASA insists.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Pictures, 2012, arrives in theatres today.

The $US200 million production about the end of the world is based on internet rumours and myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

The film claims that the end of time will come when an obscure planet - Nibiru - heads toward and collides with Earth.

The planet was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to claims by pseudo-scientists, paranormal activity enthusiasts and internet theorists.

Some websites accuse NASA of concealing the truth on the wayward planet's existence, but the US space agency has denounced such stories as an "internet hoax."

"There is no factual basis for these claims," NASA said in a question-and-answer post on its website.

If such a collision were real "astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye," it added.

The opening credits scroll over a raucous rave-up in a cramped apartment, with revelers—white and black—boozing and singing along to an impromptu jam. Without a word of dialogue the demimonde is established—this is not Don Draper's Manhattan. Shadows centers on three siblings: Benny (Ben Carruthers), a brooding beatnik and unemployed trumpet player; Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), the innocent little sister who puts up a worldly front; and Hughie (Hugh Hurd), the oldest and a struggling jazz musician. The three are African-American, but only Hughie looks it—both Benny and Lelia are light-skinned enough to pass for white.

If American independent cinema could be said to have a birthday, Nov. 11 is as good a date to celebrate as any. On that night 50 years ago, John Cassavetes, an actor then best known for his TV roles, unveiled for a downtown New York audience his directing debut, Shadows. Cassavetes had financed the production with his paychecks from Hollywood and made the film with a cast and crew of novice actors from his drama workshop. The finished product betrayed their inexperience: mismatched cuts, shots out of focus, audio out of sync. But it was also unlike anything audiences had seen before: a raw, kinetic, jazz-scored dispatch from bohemian New York that was frank about sex, progressive on race, and intoxicated with youth. The film radiated a sense of urgency, even desperation—it felt like something Cassavetes just had to get out of his system

Dow Chemical has developed a roof shingle that contains thin-film solar power cells and can be integrated into asphalt roofs, which are used in 90 percent of American homes.

Dow executives said the solar shingles can be handled like a regular asphalt shingle and can be nailed right onto a roof and walked on by roofers.

The company will begin test-marketing the shingles in mid-2010 and the company will initially target new home construction.

The thin-film solar cells, made by Global Solar of Tucson, are less efficient than traditional photovoltaic arrays, but a Dow researcher that with the solar shingles covering large portions of a roof they could meet 40 to 80 percent of a homeowner’s electricity demand.

Electricians are not needed to install the solar shingles but do have to connect the completed array to the home’s electrical system.
