This chart can feed the appetite of conspiracy theorists who claim that the US needs to exaggerate the threat of Iran in order to sell more military goods to the oil rich Arab states in the Persian Gulf. But at the same time it undermines their arguments because conspiracy theorists often include Iran’s military expenditures as part of their reasoning. The chart shows Iran’s military expenditure at around $6 billion/yr versus the Saudis alone at around $33 billion/yr. Moreover, Iran buys most of its military goods from Russia, China, N. Korea, etc. and not from American or Western European companies.

Twitter feed to become TV show?

A Twitter feed featuring pearls of wisdom from a 73-year-old father could be turned into a US TV show.

Justin Halpern, 29, has attracted more than 700,000 followers since he began posting his father's often profane words of wisdom.

The comments include: "The baby will talk when he talks, relax. It ain't like he knows the cure for cancer and he just ain't spitting it out."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Halpern will co-write the CBS project. The creators of Will and Grace will help him create a pilot show which could become a series.

Halpern moved back in with his parents in San Diego in August and began the Twitter feed based on daily conversations with his dad soon after.

Here are some of Mr Halpern Snr's words of wisdom: "Oh please, you practically invented lazy. People should have to call you and ask for the rights to lazy before they use it."

Comedy Twitter feed lands TV deal

The New South Wales Government has reversed its policy on solar power - meaning households with solar energy systems will soon be paid for all of the electricity they generate.

The state Government is adopting a gross feed-in tariff system for solar energy rather than the net model which is in place in other states.

The Environment Minister John Robertson says it means households will be paid for all of the electricity produced by solar panels, not just the surplus which is fed back into the grid.

"It will be the highest payment for families anywhere in the country at 60 cents per kilowatt-hour," he said.

"This will provide households the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and also ensure they're generating electricity using solar cells."

The scheme will only run for seven years.

But Greens MP, John Kaye, says that for it to make a real difference it needs to run for 20 years.

"We will be moving to amend the scheme to make it a scheme for the long term," he said.
