Child-support cases clog jail

Among the inmates clogging Greenville County's overcrowded jail are parents serving sentences for up to a year for failing to pay child support.

If all 138 were freed, the overcrowding problem would be nearly cut in half. It costs taxpayers $51.78 a day to house each one of them, or about $214,000 for that number of prisoners each month.

"We don't need to be building more jails on account of this population because this is not a population that is dangerous to the public," said Patterson, now a University of South Carolina law professor.

Libba Patterson, the former director of the state Department of Social Services, said most jailed parents don't have the means to comply with the court's order to pay child support.

Bodiford said most of the inmates serving time on child-support citations could be "any guy that could be walking down the street right now." They owe anywhere from less than $100 to tens of thousands of dollars, he said.

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

I love reading memoirs, but I especially love reading them when they are about where I live. I just finished reading Frank Wetzel’s World War II memoirabout growing up in Bremerton, Washington before, during and after World War II. The book was published in 1995, and and contains WWII era, and before, photos of Frank and all of his friends. One of those friends was none other than Bill Gates. No, not the gazillionaire tycoon, but his father.

Take a look at this picture from page 111 in the book. You can sure see the resemblance between father and son, can’t you? Did you know that the Gates family had an association with Bremerton, WA? “In March of 1940, Bill Gates, Sr. (grandfather to the Microsoft Bill Gates) obtained a permit to build and lease out a new Ice Creamery on Sixth Street”. I haven’t looked into it in depth, but I suspect that Bill Gates’ family were some of Washington State’s pioneers.

Gossip alienates, hurts, and destroys the subjects of its base talk. It sullies the speakers and degrades the listeners. Gossip in any of its ugly forms is not in harmony with the covenant Latter-day Saints have made to remember the Savior and follow his example. By gossiping, we break our covenant and lose the blessings associated with keeping that covenant. We lose the companionship of the Holy Ghost. If we do not repent, we will lose eternal life, the greatest gift of God. We also hurt others and may lead them to sin.

Love is the main antidote to gossip. When we love our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, we will want to be more like them. We will learn to love those around us the way Heavenly Father and Jesus love them. We will see their infinite worth and limitless potential as children of God. We will see them as our brothers and sisters.

"Cremated" father reunited with family

LONDON (Reuters) - A father mistakenly declared dead after going missing eight years ago has been reunited with his family after his son spotted him on television, police said on Thursday.

The family of John Delaney thought he had died when he disappeared in April 2000. They held a funeral and cremation after police found what they thought was his body three years later.

But Delaney, 71, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, had in fact been admitted to hospital in a confused state 10 days after he was reported missing.

Meanwhile, a badly decomposed body found in the grounds of Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2003 was mistakenly identified as that of Delaney. His family was informed and they arranged a funeral and cremation later that year.

The truth of what happened to Delaney only emerged earlier this year when he appeared on a daytime television show about missing people.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her lifestyle ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

FORREST CITY, AR – Police say a Forrest City, Arkansas man has been charged with raping his 8 day-old baby.

According to a police report, officers were called to the Forrest City Medical Center, September 1, 2008, about a baby that had been sexually assaulted. Forrest City police say the baby also had a skull fracture and had to be transferred to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock because of the severity of the injuries.

Investigators say the father attacked the infant during a visit at her 15 year-old mother's house. Police say other people were at the home at the time of the assault.

Police say Davis had no criminal record since turning 18, but could not say whether Davis had a juvy wrap-sheet. The information could not be released under Arkansas state law, said investigators.

Police say the infant’s father, 18 year-old Reginald Davis, has been charged with Rape and Second-Degree Battery.

A new Swedish study suggests older age among fathers may be associated with an increased risk for bipolar disorder in their offspring.

Other than a family history of psychotic disorders, few risk factors for the condition have been identified. Older paternal age has previously been associated with a higher risk of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism.

Emma M. Frans, M.Med.Sc., of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues identified 13,428 patients in Swedish registers with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. For each one, they randomly selected from the registers five controls who were the same sex and born the same year but did not have bipolar disorder.

When comparing the two groups, the older an individual’s father, the more likely he or she was to have bipolar disorder.

After adjusting for the age of the mother, participants with fathers older than 29 years had an increased risk.
