3D Architectural Illusions

3D street artists are great, but their ever-popular sidewalk chalk art isn’t the only 3D art of its kind. Inside a home, on the outside of a building or even in a swimming pool, the illusion of three-dimensionality can transform a space, giving the appearance of depth, texture and place in a mythical or fantastical fashion.

Eric Grohe creates surprising illusions of far-reaching spaces out of otherwise flat surfaces. In some of these images of his works, it is difficult to see what is within the picture he created and what is in the real foreground. Though not strictly photorealistic, his plays on perspective feel compellingly real from a distance.

This mystery artist clearly has an eye for classical and medieval scenes. His paintings both enliven these otherwise conventional interior spaces, creating amazing conversation pieces and great play spaces for children. If anyone knows who this is, please add information and links in the comments!

It was all about the draping and rough unexpected layering of textures at Yigal Azrouel Spring 2009. As Yigal himself told me after the show he starts his creative process with the fabrics, and then goes into the draping, shaping womens' body in a very natural soft layers. Comfortable effortless chic only a confident woman can pull off. There is something edgy but soft at the same time about Yigal Azrouel's signature look, urban influences mixed with sophisticated draping, always modern, always unexpected.

Bad Girl, Gone Good? Kati Stern, designer for Venexiana is a force to be reckoned with. Her staple smoky eye, body hugging skirts and platinum pageboy never wavers, yet her usually hard-edged rock-n-roll design sensibility was not present during her Spring 09’collection.

Stern who was inspired by Chanel while designing this collection played with couture techniques and ladylike silhouettes. The first look, a dusty blue dress with floral details set the tone for the overall show. Cocktail dresses embellished with Swarovski encrusted bow-shaped brooches replaced Venexiana’s traditional corseted mini dresses. Not sure if her current customer will have a place for these prim and proper looks, but surely a new following will be taking notice after this metamorphosis.

Designer Anthony Mallier from India has created ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses to make your eyes “Sparkle like they’ve never sparkled before.” The ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses are fused with tiny Swarovski crystals in a circle around the edges of the lenses.

The ‘Sparkle’ contact lenses are the second place winner in the ‘Crystal Vision’ competition co-organized by designboom and Swarovski. Mallier took the ‘Crystal Vision’ theme literally when he designed the crystal eye ‘bling’. The competition had 4074 entries from 92 countries.

Mallier relates, “Swarovski has been synonymous with adding that extra ‘sparkle’ to everyday life. Swarovski crystals have the power to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary through their sheer brilliance. `Sparkle’ is one such attempt to enhance the expression of one of our most expressive features: our eyes.”

While there were rumors of an A-list attendance including Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig, Mariah Carey and Tom Brady at Duckie Brown this afternoon, the reality was closer to that of an offsite show (and not of the Marc Jacobs variety).

Despite the empty promises though, there was no fault to be placed on Duckie Brown, who produced an absolutely stellar collection, different from everything else we’ve seen in menswear this season.

With a palette of almost exclusively black, the collection had a feel that went beyond modern as to be propelled into an entirely new category of innovation and newness. There was a contrast between the stretch body suits that were part of every look and the often boxy, geometrical construction of the outer-garments.

There was often a hybrid combination of athletic wear like nylon hoods peeking out of a jacket that contributed a post-modern utilitarian effect that transcended current trends to create an entirely new genre of its own.

Vanity Fair editors estimated that McCain's fierce saffron shirt dress with the popped collar, diamond earrings, four-strand pearl necklace, white Chanel watch and strappy shoes totaled up to $313,100.

And Bush's white sensible suit, Stuart Weitzman heels and pearl stud earrings would ring up to $4,325.

BCBG Max Azria pulled out all the stops to present a collection that was so unabashedly va-va-voom sexy that it left hearts pounding and tongues wagging by the end. A tonal palette of grays and whites was the backdrop for occasional flashes of bright color that were likened to “blurs into the urban landscape.”

The sexiness was evoked in flowing and draped jersey fabrics that hung effortlessly off the body. The relaxed, airy effect was played against cinched waists. A dusty purple washed silk gown with a grey belt and satin platform pumps accurately represented the nature of the collection by combing a loose and draped silhouette with a feminine and powerful waist that demands attention.

There was also a certain utilitarian “workman” chic that came through in jumpsuits and dresses with pockets that often contrasted with the overtly seductive nature of the garments.

There is something ignoble about these elite, affluent, and well-connected observers in smug fashion savaging Palin, when — especially in the case of the sneering power-women — we should all at least grant that Palin is intrinsically bright, energetic, savvy, and independent to have come this far at all, given the slanted and insider rules of the game she’s in.

In short, Sarah Palin is the emblem of what feminism was supposed to be all about: an unafraid, independent, audacious woman, who soared on her own merits without the aid of a patriarchal jumpstart, high-brow matrimonial tutelage and capital, and old-boy liaisons and networking.

Instead this entire sorry episode of personal invective against, and jealousy toward, Sarah Palin is surreal. Given the rising backlash, Palin Derangement Syndrome may prove to be the one thing, fairly or not, that sinks Barack Obama.
