If not for the dichotomy of the overbearing plantation-owner attitude both she and Barack Obama demonstrate–Michelle Obama’s inspiring roots would otherwise be compelling.

Obama’s approach toward government indicates that he identifies with the slave owners not with the slaves who reside in Michelle’s family tree. Obama should hearken to the words of Abraham Lincoln who poignantly expressed in an April 1859 letter, “…he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave. Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”

Many of the same people who protest against "trading blood for oil" when it comes to military interventions in the Middle East seem not to see that higher miles per gallon can also mean trading blood for oil.

The magic number du jour is the number of Americans without health insurance. Apparently getting more people insured is another "good thing"-- which is to say, it is something whose costs are not to be weighed against the benefits, or whose costs are to be finessed aside with optimistic projections or a claim that these costs can be covered by eliminating "waste, fraud and abuse."

In real life, people weigh one thing against another. But in politics one declares one thing to be imperative, so the issue then becomes how we do it. In real life, all sorts of desirable things are not done, either because of other desirable things that would have to be sacrificed to do it or because of the dangers incurred .

More than two centuries ago, Edmund Burke said, "Nothing is good but in proportion"-- that is, when weighed as a trade-off. But a prudent weighing of trade-offs does not produce the political melodrama of pursuing a "good thing" measured by some magic number.

One of the other magic numbers that is popular in politics is the average miles per gallon of gas that cars are supposed to get, in order to meet standards set by the government. No matter how big this number gets, it can always get bigger, so there is no logical stopping place-- which means a never-ending political crusade to increase that magic number.

The open-endedness of magic numbers is not their only problem. The more fundamental problem is that the costs entailed by a magic number are often either ignored or downplayed. More miles per gallon, for example, are usually achieved by having lighter cars-- and lighter cars mean less protection from the consequences of automobile accidents.

Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, having been nominated for it just two weeks into his Presidency.

Uch. Can you get any more disgusting? A peace prize being used to justify an expanded war into Afghanistan. By the way, according to National Security Advisor Jim Jones, Afghanistan has less than 100 Al Qaeda in it. (What?)

Well, this award is largely for what Obama might do. Let's take a look at what he has done:

* Been hypocritical on torture: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

* Expanded the war in Afghanistan.

* Says he will leave up to 50,000 troops in Iraq even after "ending military operations."

* Extended Blackwater's (aka Xe's) military contracts, Blackwater which has gone virtually unaccountable for its crimes.

* Expanded the use of military contractors.

* Continues to spy on peace groups through "fusion centers."

* Supports the growing trend of police militarization.

* Pushed to continue provisions from the Patriot Act, including the "Lone Wolf" provision.

This statement is true. Every ideology IS right. There is nothing inherently evil in ANY ideology. It may be that the ideology I despise most..Fascsim..is the best political ideology there is, and I believe it may be. Here is the rub. You cannot take any ideology in a vacuum. The best ideology for the current state of humanity is the one which allows for the greatest expression of liberty. Since, the closest one that allows for this happens to exist under the framework of Jeffersonian Democracy in this Republican system of government.

What I mean by "right" is that is each one is responding to a genuine problem within human existence. And their prescriptions for how to deal with that problem "work," at least in the short term in limited circumstances.

Obviously, there are unforeseen consequences because each ideology looks at a limited aspect of reality, and then tries to apply its solution for that part of reality to ALL of reality. The important thing is to try to have your ideology "look" at as much of reality as possible.

When you're dealing with people with other ideologies than your own, it's difficult not to try to persuade them they're wrong.

So instead of telling them they're wrong, you have to demonstrate that they're only seeing part of the picture.

I've come to believe that every ideology is right. Liberalism is right, conservatism is right, radicalism is right, fascism is right, communism is right, Catholicism is right, Rastafarianism is right, Pastafarianism is right. Any ideology that survives more than ten minutes in the ferocious Planet Earth laboratory is right.

Conservative activist David Horowitz will not be speaking at St. Louis University this month after school officials raised objections about the title and content of his speech, "Islamo-Fascism Awareness and Civil Rights."

The SLU College Republicans, a student group, had invited Horowitz to speak on campus. The event would have been paid for out of student activity fees.

SLU said in a statement that it did not "ban" Horowitz from campus. Rather, the school was concerned that the event could be viewed as "attacking another faith and seeking to cause derision on campus."

Horowitz, reached by phone on Friday, called the university's decision "outrageous." He said his speech is about what he sees as a campaign against Jews and the state of Israel on many college campuses.
