Educators Hungry for Farm-to-School Programs

As U.S. school boards and parents seek to provide locally grown food for school cafeterias, administrators struggle to pay for it.

Rising food costs and increasing requests by parents have encouraged many schools across the country to adopt farm-to-school programs so that kids can get fresh, local produce, and see how it is grown and prepared. Despite the economic benefits of supporting small, local farms and the health benefits of eating fresh produce, many school districts are struggling to garner requisite funding.

Even without the requisite financial resources, many school administrators are buying locally grown food whenever possible. States like Oregon, for example, don’t provide money to fund in-school meals, so advocates of farm-to-table programs have relied on grants or parental support.

I think that plumber that got Obama to admit that he wants to "spread the wealth around" is spot on!

How about an ad with him and maybe a few other small business owners?
Maybe some women business owners, like me, too!

Show American's who is really going to get hit by Obama's tax increase.

I think that most Americans think that it is the "brie eating" crowd who will be hit the hardest.

My husband and I own a concrete flat work company. We install driveways, basement floors, garages etc.
He leaves at 5 am and doesn't get home until usually around 8 pm. He works in hundred degree heat during the summer.
On our "days off" we work our farm, build fence and work cattle.

We don't wear suits, we wear t-shirts, jeans and work boots.

We routinely work 15 hour days either in our concrete flatwork business or on our farm.

Why should we be punished for working towards and earning the American dream?

This would be a powerful ad in my opinion.

In August, we brought you the story of Coal River Mountain, one of the last mountains in West Virginia's Coal River Valley that hasn't been destroyed by mountaintop-removal coal mining. Residents are lobbying to build a wind farm on the mountain, but Massey Energy is moving ahead on plans to strip-mine a 10-square-mile area of the mountain, regardless of whether they have the permits to do so.

Yesterday, CNN covered the battle over Coal River Mountain and the plight of the residents of Raleigh County. They also got some great quotes from state Department of Environmental Protection officials and representatives from the office of Gov. Joe Manchin (D) about why they won't step in.

"The governor sincerely believes as a country we can't take anything off the table," Lara Ramsberg, the governor's spokesperson, told CNN.

DRESDEN, Germany: A health official says 1,400 birds have been slaughtered at a poultry farm in eastern Germany after a duck tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus.

Saxony state health ministry spokesman Ralph Schreiber said Friday that the farm's entire stock of ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens was slaughtered overnight.

The farm near Goerlitz on the Polish border has been sealed off to prevent the spread of the virus. Birds at other poultry farms in the region are being checked.

Otow Orchard is renowned for preserving the Japanese art of hoshigaki -- hoshi means dried and gaki is from kaki, the Japanese word for persimmon.

Our fresh persimmons are dried each fall in a slow, patient, hands-on process that usually takes three to six weeks...per persimmon. Each persimmon is hand-peeled, strung onto a rack, and massaged every 3 to 5 days for several weeks. Weather conditions are watched carefully. The result is a transformation into a sugary delicacy that is tender and moist with concentrated persimmon flavor.
