It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.

Clip Source: www.yale.edu

I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.

This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.

But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism.

Tags: elections, party

<clipSource>http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/washing.htm</clipSource>

Republicans are flailing and Panicking

clipped by: oscarrob
clipper's remarks: The republicans simply don't get it. A Republican National Committee ad on Friday whacked Obama for associating with “William Daley: Heir to the Chicago machine. A top Obama adviser.”

McCain praised — and twice voted to confirm — Daley as secretary of commerce under President Bill Clinton. Daley, a Chicago businessman and Obama adviser, is brother of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and son of the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley. He was chairman of Vice President Al Gore’s presidential campaign in 2000.

The new Obama ad shows a grip-and-grin photo of McCain and Daley together, signed by McCain.

Tags: politics, campaign, mccain, obama, republican

<clipSource>http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14491.html</clipSource>

Rational Disagreement or Rabid Hatred?

clipped by: darkeforce
clipper's remarks: Click the link to read this entire article; it makes some very good points. Drawing equivalences between right-wingers and left-wingers is not a valid exercise. The Democrats (and Liberals) see their differences from the Republicans (and Conservatives) as a nuanced disagreement of ideals, while Republicans see it as an absolute battle of Good vs. Evil. They aren't opposing Obama because they disagree with his platform; they are against him because they think he's evil. He's been called the Anti-Christ (critical study of Revelations will reveal that he's too old). At rallies, people are screaming to kill him, and cut off his head. It's come to the point where you can't even take it for granted that Republicans accept the fact that Obama is human, just like McCain. This Republican base is acting on a very primitive level, like a lizard-brain, with no critical thought about what they're doing or why they oppose him.

Clip Source: www.idrewthis.org

Clip Source: www.idrewthis.org

 Fear and loathing

posted by Liberal Eagle at 1:57 PM

You see a lot of false equivalencies in the media. It's sort of their creed: if you report that Republicans have done something that makes them look bad, you must immediately find a way to say that Democrats do it also. That is how you seem "fair." If the Republicans are, for instance, lying through their teeth, and the Democrats aren't, you're obligated to say something like "Republicans are claiming that Ted Kennedy is a serial killer, but Democrats today used a very generous interpretation of their tax plan, so both sides lie."

And this is my point. The conservative base doesn't see politics as a clash of competing legitimate ideas. It sees politics, and everything else, as a clash between good and evil. When George W. Bush said "you're either with us or you're against us," he wasn't just talking about that one moment in history. Conservatives think that about literally everything.

<clipSource>http://www.idrewthis.org/</clipSource>

The 'unitary executive' question

clipped by: Kelika
clipper's remarks: "Bush's aggressive exercise of unilateral powers has attracted serious opposition. Unfortunately, too many imagine that the unitary executive doctrine and its kingly prerogatives will leave office with him. That hope is false. History teaches that presidents do not give up power -- both Democrats and Republicans have worked to keep it. And besides, hoping the next president will give back some powers means conceding that it is up to him to make that decision."

"If people have found Bush's exercise of executive power alarming, they should not only begin questioning presidential candidates about it, they should make it clear to their congressional representatives that they want these excess powers checked. Barack Obama has already promised that he will continue using signing statements, though he will not act as if they have the force of law. Interestingly enough, John McCain has suggested he will end the practice. These slim indicators deserve more pressure and scrutiny."

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Biden charged that Dick Cheney had become "the most dangerous vice president we've had probably in American history" because of his attempts to create a super-powerful unitary executive. There is a fashion these days for apologies: not apologies for the things that one has actually done oneself (that kind of apology is as difficult to make and as unfashionable as ever), but for public apologies by politicians for the crimes and misdemeanours of their ancestors, or at least of their predecessors. I think it is reasonable to call this pattern of political breast-beating the False Apology Syndrome.

What is this all about, and what does it signify? Does it mean that at long last the powerful are making a genuine effort to see things from the point of view of the weak, or is it, on the contrary, a form of moral exhibitionism that subverts genuine moral thought and conduct?

apologies for distant events, however important or pregnant with consequences those events may have been, are another matter entirely. They have bad effects on both those who give them and those who receive them.

<clipSource>http://www.incharacter.org/article.php?article=119</clipSource>

Branchflower Report: Contradicts Itself: Ignores Facts and Law

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: No, indeed, Sen. French and Mr. Branchflower dearly hope most Americans won't look past the headlines generated by this ridiculous farce of a report. French and Branchflower hope that Americans will be misled into thinking this report is from someone whose judgment or opinions actually count for something — instead of being from a hitman hired to complete a political hatchet job, as it actually is.

This report changes absolutely nothing, except that it will be manipulated politically by Obama supporters and Palin haters in an attempt to drive more potential voters into taking sides with Trooper Mike Wooten — a proven child abuser (Tasered his own 10-year-old stepson on a lark) . . . .

UPDATE Even the Anchorage Daily News is misrepresenting[...] I just received an email update from it in which it claims that "Today Alaska legislators found Palin did abuse her power in the 'Troopergate' controversy." French, is a purely political one. They do not want you to read the 263 pages of his report, but I invite you to do so: By the end of it, you'll be thoroughly convinced that both Wooten and Monegan ought to have been fired! And if you're a person, as I am, who admires husbands and fathers who stand up for their families, you'll definitely want to shake First Dude Todd Palin's hand, and maybe even give him a (manly) bear-hug.

Tags: "troopergate", monegan, mike wooten, branchflower, sen. french, gov palin

<clipSource>http://hughhewitt.townhall.com/blog/g/134db782-50f0-42e5-8171-791804d9fbc1</clipSource>

America's Israeli-Occupied Media

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: During the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. citizenbfk
clipper's remarks: While the Republicans make false charges against a group called ACORN, for doing voter fraud...here's a real fact we can hang our hats on:

Republicans - went - to - court - to - try - to - close - voting -- places.

Republicans are trying to close these early-voting centers because they are near poor and minority areas. If they were near their Wall St. supporters there would be no complaint.

It is true, though, BTW, that these new voting centers approved last year by a majority vote of an election board, might help Democrats...that's why the majority of Democrats on this election board voted in favor.

BUT - Such actions are a non-stop battle between all the parties all the time. And this is mild compared to the non-stop efforts at gerrymandering, where the boundaries of election districts and distorted in favor of one party.

Since Republicans have been in power the last eight years they are Much More guilty of this.

Clip Source: abcnews.go.com

Ballot Battle Popping in Indiana

Republicans went to state court and won a temporary restraining order against opening the voting places,

Tags: gerrymandering

<clipSource>http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/Vote2008/Story?id=5997772&page=1</clipSource>
