These custom-made fake babies, known as re-borns, are extremely lifelike and can be made with beating hearts and some sort of breathing mechanism. Creepy stuff.

If you have ever seen a Reborn baby doll, then you know that they look for all the world like real babies. Reborns are popular with doll collectors as well as those who can't or don't want to have actual children.

Some of them, however, just lie there looking like real babies who aren't breathing. Like the one police in Australia saw when they peered into the window of an otherwise empty and locked automobile. Believing a child's life was in danger, the police smashed the window and rescued the doll.

A similar incident in the United States cost a man a window out of his brand new Hummer after his wife left her Reborn in his car.

Published this week by Harvard University Press, How Infants Know Minds, by Vasudevi Reddy, a professor of developmental and cultural psychology at the University of Portsmouth, details how children use deception.

Reddy describes how babies as young as eight months can fake crying and laughter. She talks of nine-month-olds who, unwilling to stop playing, feign deafness despite their mothers' calls; and of babies not yet one year old acting innocent when caught doing something forbidden. By the time the children in Reddy's studies were 2 they were indulging in face-saving lies, often ready to blame siblings, to avoid punishment.

Last year she published her findings, Deception and Social Living, in the Royal Society journal Philosophical Transactions. From Reddy's studies, it soon became clear that infants were attempting to fool parents at a far younger age than predicted.

However, many child experts remain sceptical about her claims.

China executes ex-food safety chief

China has executed its former head food and drug regulator for taking bribes to approve medicines, rapidly carrying out his sentence in an apparent warning to other officials following a series of scandals about the quality of products made in China.

The execution of Zheng Xiaoyu, 62, was confirmed by state television and news agencies after the Supreme People’s Court approved the death sentence. Mr Zheng was convicted of taking Rmb6.5m in bribes from pharmaceuticals companies.

As well as the cases of fake medicine raise during Mr Zheng’s trial, China has witnessed a series of product safety scares in recent years including a cancer-causing dye used to colour egg yolks, faulty milk powder that led to the deaths of several babies and pork which contained banned additives.

Do Christians get a humorectomy at confirmation?

There's a rather unsurprising study that shows babies can "lie" at a very early age, deceiving their parents with fake cries as early as six months (any parents out there? You know this is trivial—kids pop out of the birth canal as greedy, selfish little beasts who will do anything to cajole their way into your heart.) Now look at how a fundie blog spins the story: it's sin! It confirms what the Bible tells us, that we are born into sin! And then the author asks, "What stories (humorous, preferably) can you share about how your children demonstrate they, too, are sinful from birth?"

It will make you groan with boredom. There follows a discussion of whether Jesus would have faked a cry to get Mommy's attention (no, apparently not) and the most boring anecdotes about kids ever. It's pathetic and tedious and clueless all at once.

Chinese investigators say nearly 60 hospitals and pharmacies in north-eastern China have been using fake blood protein in patients' drips

Officials said the fake product could be life-threatening

Albumin, or plasma protein, is used to treat patients suffering from shock and burns and during open-heart surgery.

The scandal is the latest to expose weaknesses in China's regulation of food and drug standards.

The food and drug administration in the north-eastern state of Jilin found 18 hospitals and more than 30 pharmacies were sold or were selling false batches of the albumin.

Officials did not say whether anyone had died or fallen ill through using the false protein, though one Chinese newspaper said it had led to one death.

China has launched a nationwide clampdown on counterfeit products after a series of scandals.

In one of the worst cases 13 babies died from malnutrition after being fed fake baby milk.

The tainted toothpaste has been blamed for dozens of deaths in Panama.

California's governor, who was oiling his quads for the camera when Lois Gibbs was fighting a chemical catastrophe at Love Canal, is suddenly being hailed as an environmental hero.

Fine. To a point.

Arnold Schwarzenegger does seem to understand that the planet is in trouble. As a green Republican, he is a welcome contrast to the know-nothing, do-less attitude of President Bush. His movie star persona is perfect for delivering lines like "Arnold to Detroit: Get off your butt."

Duh. Keep talking, Governor, but rather than comforting us with visions of the fantastic green future, start making people uncomfortable. Remind your Malibu neighbors that California has the highest percentage of minority residents living near toxic waste facilities. Tell the chemical industry they have no right to pollute the bodies of babies still in the womb. Announce that you will no longer accept campaign contributions from the oil industry.

The breasts are used by community midwife teams

A hospital needing a cheaper alternative to fake breasts has begun knitting its own.

The woolly breasts are being used at Liverpool Women's Hospital to show new mothers how to breastfeed and how to express milk if necessary.

Kate McFadden, the hospital's infant feeding co-ordinator, has already knitted several and has called in the services of her mother, a keen knitter.

The breasts are produced in a variety of skin shades.

They are used by community midwife teams to demonstrate how milk should be expressed, particularly for premature babies being kept in hospital.

Ms McFadden told BBC News: "We have a regional neo-natal unit and we encourage new mothers to express milk to help the small and sick babies.

Expensive models

"When we first put an e-mail appeal out to everyone in the trust, there were a fair few messages being sent back.

"But they are vital to us and are a low-cost, simple teaching tool."

Ms McFadden sourced the breast pattern from the Lactation Consultants' Association.

She said: "You can buy model breasts, but they cost around £35 each, which is quite prohibitive, as we need about 50."

Although community groups, including the official friends of the hospital association, have pitched in, more knitters are needed.

Sometimes you have to be careful when selecting a new name for yourself. For instance, let's say you have chosen the nickname "Fly Head."Normally you would think that "Fly Head" would mean a person who has beautiful swept-back features, as if flying through the air. But think again. Couldn't it also mean "having a head like a fly"? I'm afraid some people might actually think that.

Somebody told me how frightening it was how much topsoil we are losing each year, but I told that story around the campfire and nobody got scared.

I think a good product would be "Baby Duck Hat." It's a fake baby duck, which you strap on top of your head. Then you go swimming underwater until you find a mommy duck and her babies, and you join them. Then all of the sudden, you stand up out of the water and roar like Godzilla. Man those ducks really take off! Also Baby Duck Hat is good for parties.

Before criticizing someone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away and have their shoes.

I hope some animal never bores a hole in my head and lays its eggs in my brain, because later I might think I'm having a good idea but it's just eggs hatching.

During the Middle Ages, probably one of the biggest mistakes was not putting on your armor because you were "just going down to the corner.

Broken promises don't upset me. I just think, why did they believe me?

For mad scientists who keep brains in jars, here's a tip: why not add a slice of lemon to each jar, for freshness?
