Long long ago when future seemed to be so distant and dim, people of the Soviet Union dreamt a lot and cherished a bunch of illusions about fantastic makings of the future. And straight 50 years ago, on the eve of New Year, one of most famous Russian newspapers published a special edition. Group of journalists-dreamers took their risks and tried to predict how it’s going to be 50 years after, in 2010.

But it seems that they were not so good at future forecasting and failed at almost any article. So let’s see what came out of it.

This cutting has 3 interesting articles. The first one on the left is called “Funny Birthday party” and tells about a reunion of some boarding school group. They met and celebrated 100-th birthday of 17 people in their group. Two articles to the right are about tunnel under the Caspian Sea which is more than 200 miles long and also about the underwater mine at a depth of 470 meters (it is about 1400 feet).

Q. Why do economies recover?

A. They recover because bad investments made during the bubble are liquidated, valuable capital is no longer being wasted on them, new capital is formed from savings, and profitable enterprises attract new capital to expand. Low real interest rates caused by increased savings encourage borrowing, manufacturers use the capital to make new machines, producers of consumer goods buy them, cash goes through the system, consumers see things are getting better, more consumer goods are produced, and consumers buy them. It has to happen this way or the recovery will fail.

The difficult part of a recovery is ugly. Bankrupt firms need to fail so that valuable capital resources are not wasted on their continuing activities. This means that unemployment rises (10.2% now) and business bankruptcies are high. Trillions of dollars of asset values are wiped out.

In order to understand the present state of the U.S. economy you have to understand that there are two things happening at once. For the most part they are in conflict with each other, in that one track can negatively impact the other.

Here are some of the economic data that have come out this week, in no particular order:

PositiveNegative The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose 3.1 points to 55.7, the third straight month of growth and the highest level since April 2006. A reading above 50 indicates expansion for the sector.Current-dollar personal income decreased $15.5 billion (0.5 percent) in the third quarter, in contrast to an increase of $19.1 billion (0.6 percent) in the second.

The ISM's employment index rose for the first time in 15 months as manufacturers sought to recall workers or enlist temporary help.

Consumer confidence fell to 47.7 in October, from 53.4 in September.

Wis. man attempts drive-by shooting, forgets to roll down car window

Drive-by shooting epic fail: Forgetting to roll down your car window before you start shooting from the driver's seat. Whoops.

Andrew J. Burwitz, 20, of Appleton, Wis., allegedly tried to do a drive-by shooting at the home of his ex-girlfriend's family and another random house. Police found him because he failed to roll down his car window and shattered it when he made the first shot.

He was charged Wednesday with four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, four counts of endangering safety by reckless use of a firearm, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

Voters last night added language to a town bylaw that will make it illegal to own more than three cats without a kennel license, though Selectman Steven Sullivan said housing three felines was already a violation.

The article came after a neighborhood feud over cats owned by Mary Ellen Richards of Kennedy Drive

Some of Mrs. Richards’ 15 cats are allowed outside, and one neighbor said the cats have ruined his yard.

The discussion at town meeting last night had Mrs. Richards warning residents that the $100 per day fines being imposed on her could also be imposed on them if they fail to get kennel licenses for their pets.

She has put her home up for sale and plans to move to a “more cat-friendly community,” but vowed to fight the fines.

The ultimate political expression has evolved to a sector of the world that is, in effect, ruled by multinational corporations.

What is worse is that these multinationals fail to realize that ultimately they are undercutting their own profits and shrinking their own market by underminding their own profit center in formerly prosperous prime economies. The bonus from offshoring can only last so long and is highly subject to proper application and use within a given multinational corporation. Offshoring is not a cure-all for corporate profits, nor a real solution for long-term benefit to anyone.
No government contracts should be given to multinational corporations, ever!
