Global recession hits Zimbabwe horticulture srctor

HARARE (Xinhua): Zimbabwe's Horticultural Promotion Council (HPC) said on Friday the global recession has impacted negatively on the country's horticultural sector, particularly flower growers.

He told New Ziana that as a result, some growers, particularly smaller ones in the country had gone under. "Last season was one of the worst in the history of the industry," he said.

"Companies need to go down there, find out what consumers want and grow the crop," he said, noting that when horticulture firms fail to get freight space from Air Zimbabwe, they drive all the way to South Africa with their produce to load it to other airlines going to Europe.

He said fear of taking risks was the major factor preventing local companies from moving away from traditional markets in the North and establish new ones in the South.

He said there were more than 45 million people in South Africa who could buy horticulture produce from Zimbabwe. "They have the money and we have the land," he said.

A voice of reason in a maelstrom of condemnations

U.S. bishops,

By denouncing Notre Dame for inviting President Obama

are surely in an awkward position

The problem is that on July 10, Pope Benedict XVI will receive President Obama at the Vatican itself

will those same bishops denounce the Vatican, too, as they did Notre Dame?

It does not

mean that the pope and the Vatican have abandoned the Catholic world view on questions of the value of life or can no longer be considered "Catholic." All of which are allegations made of those who fail to judge, condemn, deny or reject Catholic politicians who seek to eliminate abortion by making it unnecessary rather than simply criminalizing abortion and ignoring the social system that breeds it.

Is the attempt

to ostracize those who seek alternative approaches to

abortion really the most effective -- and the most moral position -- a Catholic can take?

By ignoring

other social justice issues, can we

consider ourselves

grounded in a Catholic vision of the world

I'm in a good mood. No. I'm like in a singing good mood. I might even dance. The state of Connecticut's efforts to go after the diocese of Bridgeport have fallen into the category of EPIC FAIL once again. The state Attorney General just called on the Office of State Ethics to stop attacking the Church.

The Attorney General stated today that Connecticut should drop their efforts to force the Diocese of Bridgeport to register as a lobbyist because "[t]here is no denying the profound and serious constitutional concerns in enforcing the lobbyist registration laws against the Church under these circumstances."

You see, it all started when a couple of dopey legislators last year got it in their tiny brains that as revenge for the Church's stance on gay marriage they were going to try to wrest the power of the Church away from bishops and forcibly hand it over to elected lay boards in each parish.

Student’s Design Helps Piece Together Parts Of The Alzheimer’s Puzzle

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2009) — A Kingston University design student has turned his coursework into a budding business venture, launching a jigsaw puzzle ideal for people living with dementia.

Ben Atkinson-Willes, 22, who is completing a degree in product and furniture design at Kingston University in South West London this year, was inspired to use his skills to create a specially-designed activity puzzle after his granddad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s important to keep people with Alzheimer’s as physically and mentally active for as long as possible, because it gives them a better quality of life in the long run,” Ben explained. “One thing my granddad loves doing is puzzles, but the products with fewer pieces were generally designed for very young children. I wanted to create something that would suit his need and respect his age.”

Just the title of the study is confusing, so I intend to parse it out a little bit and define some of tee terms used in common words. This way you can actually understand the significance of the type of clinical trial that was done.

A big part of conducting a fair clinical trial is controlling all the factors. This is the only way to prove a very specific cause for the effect that you are seeing. For instance, there is a group of college students who all fail an exam. They all stayed up late the night before the exam. So staying up late causes students to perform poorly on exams? There is no way to tell from this data! You would need to have a control group for all factors that may contribute to the grade. These may include GPA, drug-alcohol use, amount of time spent studying etc. There are factors that were controlled in this study about the laser comb. When a study is randomized the participants do not know which control group they are in.
