In collaboration with Professor Tim Berners-Lee – the co-inventor of the World Wide Web – the pair have been investigating the next generation Web. “What is emerging now is a digital ecosystem,’ says Professor Shadbolt, ‘involving lots of simple systems which connect millions of complex ones – humans!”

And there begins to be a certain amount of logic and a lessening of the fear I feel for the day when I am some robots whipping boy. We see such developments already in websites such as Facebook and Flickr, and programs such as Google Earth and World of Warcraft. We are being linked together, ever so slowly by a collective consciousness.

One of the greatest fears of many is the underlying knowledge that of all the wonderful advances of technology, the internet and robotics is simply bringing us closer to being subservient to our robotic overlords.

However British Computer Society President and ECS Professor of Artificial Intelligence Nigel Shadbolt, believes differently.

Shadbolt believes that the future of artificial intelligence will be much different, though no less exciting, than previously expected.

Instead of intelligence that is a “brain in a box”, we are seeing intelligence that is assistive, adaptive and flexible.

In other words, instead of an intelligence that is “…agonizing about their existence or whether we are about to switch them off” we are seeing the growth of intelligence that, in years to come, will immerse us and center around humans, rather than feel the need to enslave humans.

There will be micro-intelligences all around us – systems that are very good and adaptive at particular tasks

Mesh Platforms

clipper's remarks: There seems to be a pretty big focus on 'the mesh' these days. This post from RWW pulls together material from Marc Canter's upcoming book. It's a good look at the competing platforms that are emerging.

The idea of a mesh network is a bit hard to conceptualize. You could say that it's a bunch of communications devices that help each other move data from one point to another. Wikipedia offers a much better, albeit more involved, definition. I found Microsoft's explanation rather easier to grasp. And their Vision video isn't bad either.

It's great to hear that Marc Canter is writing a book, called 'How to build the Open Mesh'. He's been working for years on this vision with his product PeopleAggregator. He's just posted the four Appendices that conclude the book in his blog. It's a great overview of the major web platforms: Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft Mesh, and Facebook/MySpace.

Gaming Social Network Raptr Opens Its Doors

That's where new social network Raptr, launching today, comes in handy: It helps track the games you play on your computer and on the three major videogame systems -- Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's PS3 -- and lets your friends know what you're up to. For instance, it could alert them if you log in to Halo 3 and start playing, so they can join in. And then if you get enough kills to move up a skill level in the game, it will tell them that too. It'll also hook in to Facebook or Twitter to send out alerts, which should help make it more useful while Raptr grows.

Founder Dennis Fong says the company will also be announcing some deals soon to bundle Raptr software with some PC games.

In February, Raptr raised $12 million from Accel Partners and the Founders Fund. Fong sold his last social network for gamers -- XFire -- to Viacom in 2006 for $102 million.
