What is extreme ironing?

The sport that is 'extreme ironing' is an outdoor activity that combines the danger and excitement of an 'extreme' sport with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt. It involves taking an iron and board (if possible) to remote locations and ironing a few items of laundry. This can involve ironing on a mountainside, preferably on a difficult climb, or taking an iron skiing, snowboarding or canoeing.

How many people do extreme ironing?

Presently it is estimated that up to 1,000 people (2003 figs) around the world take part in extreme ironing. Over 80 people competed at the World Championships in Munich in Sept 2002.

Where can I start?

Budding extreme ironists are advised to start ironing in the safety of their back garden, before progressing to mountainsides, woods or public places. The basic equipment is an iron and board. Ironists are also advised to take full safety equipment such as harnesses, ropes and helmets where appropriate.

Last week we remarked on the news media’s extreme emphasis on Dara Torres’s age (41) in their coverage of her success at the U.S. swimming trials

Torres’s age especially seems like a dodge, when you consider that there’ll be an athlete making his debut at next month’s Games at a far more advanced age — 60, to be exact

That athlete is Laurie Lever

Yet Lever will hardly be the oldest athlete at these Games. Canadian show jumper Ian Millar, 61, will be appearing in his ninth Olympics and has been nominated for the honor of carrying the Maple Leaf into the stadium during the opening ceremony

Millar has an avid following, as you can tell from this 2007 clip, But even he won’t be the oldest at the Games.

That distinction will probably go to Japanese dressage rider Hiroshi Hoketsu, 67, who will be appearing at his second Olympics.

There will be athletes well into their 40s and 50s in other sports besides equestrian

Battling both gravity and the elements, the climber claws her way up a granite boulder by just her fingertips.

For most, the lack of ropes and safety equipment would be a perilous step too far.

But this woman has gone even further and abandoned her clothes to take part in the new sport of naked rock climbing

The climber is one of a series of super-fit 'Stone Nudes' captured in action on the cliffs and mountains of America.

Without clothes, specialist shoes or other equipment, participants say the experience captures the 'true essence of the climbing spirit.'

It is the latest extreme sport craze to sweep the US, and is now tipped to become a popular pastime in the UK.

And not just any sport - extreme sports! Women's role in contemporary society is an ongoing debate as more and more women take part in the workforce. After all, making a career for women is just as important as for men. At this point I stand on the Model B side of Talcott Parsons' views of gender roles, i.e. total disintegration of roles. All housework should be done by both parties in equal shares.

CROSS CITY, Fla. — Warren Messner was 15 when he and some friends attacked a homeless man and left him for dead. Mr. Messner jumped on a log laid across the man’s ribs. He does not know why. He was high, does not remember much and wants to forget the rest.

“It was just a senseless crime.” he said, his eyes down, his shoulders slumped. “I wish it would have never happened. It made no sense. It was stupidity.”

Mr. Messner’s story is not unusual. Nationwide, violence against the homeless is soaring, and overwhelmingly the attackers are teenagers and young adults. In Florida the problem is so severe that the National Coalition for the Homeless is setting up speakers bureaus to address a culture that sees attacking the homeless as a sport. I

“I think it reflects a lack of respect for the homeless that has reached such extreme proportions that homeless people aren’t viewed as people,” said Maria Foscarinis, executive director of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.

Triatheletes can over extend themselves, and no event in extreme heat conditions should be run without a trainer and medical advice. Apart from merely 'collapsing' in the heat there can be a condition known as 'muscle meltdown,' where the integrity of the muscles breakdown, and muscles can literally melt.

A hot day early in the competitive season raises a triathlete's risk of collapse from heat stress because they are not yet acclimatised to the heat, new Australian research has found.

Cameron Gosling of Monash University and colleagues report their findings in this month's issue of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

"Participants need to be aware of acclimatisation needs and if there are extremes of temperature early in the season, be more cautious,"

"They should exercise within their capacity, not over-extend themselves, keep hydrated and not progress too fast."

They found the incidence of heat-related collapse was dramatically reduced by acclimatisation and by event organisers introducing protective measures to lessen the chance of collapse.

He says the research is the first to reveal heat casualty incidence in shorter triathlons.

"These extra demands meant when they stopped, their blood pressure dropped, they felt faint, dizzy and collapsed," he says.
