Complete Genomics, a Silicon Valley company backed by venture capitalists, produced complete sequences of three people’s DNA at an average cost of $4,500, accelerating the race to develop faster, cheaper gene-mapping systems

That’s about one-tenth as cheap as the $48,000 effort reported in August by Helicos Biosciences Corp. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first human genome map was completed by researchers in 2001 at an estimated cost of more than $100 million, according to a report published today in the journal Science. Complete Genomics funded the research.

Helicos, Illumina Inc. of San Diego, Pacific Biosciences Inc. of Menlo Park, California, and Roche Holding AG of Basel, Switzerland, are competitors trying to develop technology that would map the DNA of individuals for less than $1,000 and to sell systems to government and academic researchers. This article will show you how to link to a specific point in any YouTube video by adding an extension to the URL. That way, next time you post a link to Facebook or email your friend that funny video, it'll start right where you want it to.

Go to the video you are linking to and pause it at the point you want it to start when you link to it. Hover the cursor over the round time marker on the red bar at the bottom of the video. The time should appear above it.

Add #t=[number minutes]m[number seconds]s to the end of the URL in the browser bar, ensuring it follows directly after the video code. If it says "&feature=related" or "&feature=popular" right after the code, just erase that.

Your URL should now look like this: youtube.com/watch?v=a1b2c3d4#t=1m15s (This example would link to 1 minute and 15 seconds.)

Copy and paste the URL so the people who click on it will start watching it right at that time!

The fans who founded Wonder Festival had started running science fiction conventions in Osaka in 1981, with Daicon III, whose opening animation has become famous among anime, video games, comics, manga,hentai fans. They used the experience and contacts they gained to set up General Products, Japan’s first specialty science fiction store. Wonder Festival was a logical extension of the store. A number of the group went on to form anime studio GAINAX, creators of such hits as Evangelion, and in 1990 General Products withdrew from Wonder Festival and merged with GAINAX to focus on animation. They later fictionalized their memories of the period in Otaku no Video.

El papel no es el mejor comunicador, ni el más rápido, pero sí es un medio ideal para transmitir «valores» que no consiguen otros formatos. No obstante, tenemos que tomar conciencia de que la sociedad ya ha dictaminado.

La muerte del papel?

No se necesitan periodistas, infografistas o programadores, sino hombres —y mujeres— del renacimiento capaces de entender la noticia en toda su extensión; pintada en la página, con un texto telegráfico sazonado de dibujos, gráficos y tablas, como un todo y que se pueda leer en menos de un minuto. Todo eso hecho en un día y, al menos 2 ó 3 veces, para que sea rentable para la empresa.

Sólo nosotros, los diseñadores, podemos frenar éste cataclismo cultural.

Los periódicos cierran o reducen su presencia en las calles

Otros se quedan en lectura de fin de semana

Cada día más ojos miran a la pantalla y menos al papel

The good news is, President Obama will sign a measure today to extend unemployment benefits for at least 14 weeks for people out of work. It's money well spent -- it helps struggling people, and the investment tends to be stimulative -- and with new, discouraging job numbers, the timing is right.

"Given the employment situation and the general bang for the buck you get from unemployment insurance, that's probably the most sensible of the stimulative policies to extend," Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said.

Because even though Republicans were allowed to tack on a tax cut to the bill as the price of getting it passed, they decided to filibuster anyway

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) wondered yesterday why any lawmaker would deliberately hold up unemployment benefits during a recession. "Who are they representing?" she wondered.
