clipper's remarks: Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post-World War II Western Art, most strongly with American visual arts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with this movement include Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Richard Serra. It is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and a bridge to Postmodern art practices.

The term has expanded to encompass a movement in music which features repetition and iteration, as in the compositions of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, and Terry Riley. (See also Postminimalism).

The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays of Samuel Beckett

Robert Rauschenberg Dies at 82- Respect

Robert Rauschenberg, one of the American artists who made significant changes in art during the 1950 transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art, died on Monday night at his home on Captiva Island, Fla., at the age of 82.

According to his New York gallery, PaceWildenstein, the cause of his death was heart failure.

A painter, printmaker, choreographer, sculptor, photographer, onstage performer, set designer and even composer, Mr. Rauschenberg encouraged the idea that an artist should not only stick to one environment or style. If one has a mind as creative as Rauschenberg’s, he cannot be confined to only one domain.

With Rauschenberg, the lines between painting, sculpture, technology, printmaking, dancing and photography become really thin, almost invisible.

“I really feel sorry for people who think things like soap dishes or mirrors or Coke bottles are ugly,” Rauschenberg once said, “because they’re surrounded by things like that all day long, and it must make them miserable.”

Abstract Expressionism: An Experiment

When I began painting a few months ago I also began trying to learn about various artists, periods, and movements. It's tough to learn about this stuff on your own, I think, because you don't have the enforced discipline of a classroom and grading nor the instructor or other group to help in clearing up any confusion.

For me the experiment was an unqualified success, regardless of what the final painting looks like. In this case I happen to like the result, but that's just a bonus. I consider it to be a success because if I could see what I feel on a relatively good day this is what it would look like, given the style constraint I placed on myself. Further, the act of painting this did bring out more of my non-depressed self. The reality became the expression and the expression enhanced the reality.

To the untrained eye, they appear to be simple daubs that could have been created by a two year old. Which is precisely what they are.

But that didn't stop the supposed experts falling over themselves to acclaim them.

The toddler in question is Freddie Linsky, who has fooled the art world into buying and asking to exhibit his paintings.

Freddie's efforts, which include works using tomato ketchup composed while sitting on his high chair, were posted by his mother Estelle Lovatt on collector Charles Saatchi's online gallery.

Freddie is said to favour the "spot and blotch" technique pioneered by the American abstract expressionism movement in the 1950s.

One creation

was captioned: "A bold use of colour. Inspired by the 'plein air' habit of painting by Monet, drawing on the natural world that surrounds us all."

Freddie's mother, a lecturer at Hampstead School of Art and a freelance art critic, said she never dreamt anyone would be duped by her over-the-top descriptions.

Two works by Jamali, an acclaimed US-based artist of Pakistani origin, will be auctioned for an AIDS charity at a private dinner he is hosting at his Manhattan gallery Sep 27.

He came in contact with Sufism early in his life and also acknowledges the influences of Buddhism and Hinduism on his art.

Now going by the name Jamali, the prolific artist runs two galleries for display and sale of his works in Florida besides the one in New York

Jamali's artistic style called Mystical Expressionism - blending contemporary consciousness with art's ancient traditions - and charismatic persona have attracted a select circle of prestigious collectors including Raquel Welch, Oprah Winfrey, Elton John and Jack Welch.

"My objective is to raise one quarter of a million dollars from the two works," Jamali, who has been supporting many charities, told IANS.

His co-host for the event with an exclusive guest list will be Sheila C. Johnson, an African-American billionaire philanthropist.

his site is The Museum of Modern Art’s first, exclusively created “virtual” exhibition and showcases its unparalleled collection of German Expressionist prints and illustrated books. The Brücke group, formed in 1905 in Dresden by four revolutionary architectural students including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel, strove to achieve a new synthesis between art and life, bringing meaning back to what they considered the superficial bourgeois existence of German life under Kaiser Wilhelm II. They organized exhibitions and publicized their own work by issuing annual portfolios of prints. Printmaking, and the woodcut in particular, became one of their most important modes of expression. This site presents more than 110 prints arranged into thematic groupings that highlight the issues and motifs central to this seminal movement in the history of modern prints.
