A peckish bird has briefly knocked out part of the world's biggest atom smasher by causing a chain reaction with a piece of bread.

The particle collider has been plagued by problems since it was briefly started in September 2008. (ABC)

Bits of a French loaf dropped on an external electrical power supply caused a short circuit last week, triggering failsafe devices that shut down part of the cooling system of the giant experiment to probe the secrets of the universe.

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) says the system was restored several hours after the incident last week while the multi-billion-dollar Large Hadron Collider was barely affected.

"The bird escaped unharmed but lost its bread," CERN said in a statement.

CERN said the latest incident was minor and did not affect attempts to restart the accelerator later this month following repairs.

"It made for a small warming from absolute zero (minus 273 degrees Celsius) to minus 268 degrees but the machine was not stopped

I did these reversals myself. I wasn't a big believer in reversals until I reversed some of my own speech!! I was amazed at the things I was REALLY saying... and YES... I absolutely agreed that I was unconsciously thinking what the reversal said!! After that, I decided that there really IS something to speech reversals. Sometimes, you don't believe in things until you experiment ON yourself!!

A curious finding was revealed yesterday by researchers from the University of Bristol, UK, challenging the capacity of nanoparticles and medical treatments in causing damage in the DNA structure. The experiment was made to see if a nanoparticle can damage the DNA of cells at a certain distance even when the cells are placed behind an impassable barrier of tissue. The said tissue barrier was about four cells deep, and is made from a “BeWo” human cancer cell. It is unique compared to other cell type found in the body as it become a standard cell line and this type of cell is very fit to work for laboratories. The nanoparticle used in the experiment however is a 30-nanometre-wide bead of surgical cobalt-chromium alloy, in which is used on a larger scale in making surgical implants such as hip prostheses.

The difficulties faced by those working on the project have prompted some members of the scientific community to speculate, in all seriousness, that the machine is sabotaging itself — from the future.

The theory is that the particle that physicists hope to produce might be "abhorrent to nature," so that once created it would work backwards through time to put a stop to whatever created it. However Dr Mike Lamont, who works at the Cern control center, said that the nature of the experiment meant that glitches were inevitable.

Bread-bombing bird interrupts LHC cooling

Yep, it’s true: A bird dropped a baguette on some outdoor electrical equipment at the Large Hadron Collider on Tuesday, interrupting the cooling system that chills two sectors of the collider. CERN issued a statement today saying that the incident was similar to a power outage: failsafe systems came on, the cause was identified, and the two sectors are now back to normal operating temperatures.

According to the statement, the bird escaped unharmed but lost its bread.

Scientists develop machine that can read minds, paint pictures

A MIND-reading machine that can produce pictures of what a person is seeing or remembering has been developed by scientists.

The device studies patterns of brainwave activity and turns them into a moving image on a computer screen.

In a pioneering experiment, an American team scanned the brain activity of two volunteers watching a video and used the results to recreate the images they were seeing.

Although the results were crude, the technique was able to reproduce the rough shape of a man in a white shirt and a city skyline.

Using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner, normally found in hospitals, the American team scanned the brains of two volunteers while they watched videos.

The results were fed into a computer which looked for links between colours, shapes and movements on the screen, and patterns of activity in the brain.

Frog tadpoles have a good nose for danger: Scientists know that they go from headlong swimming to total stillness when they smell a predator. Now, researchers have discovered that frogs get that odoriferous training very early on. When they’re still embryos, they can learn to assess the threat level by sniffing for a predator’s pheromones.

In an experiment sure to make PETA squirm, crushed tadpoles were mixed with water in which a tiger salamander had been swimming. Embryos were raised in this water with different concentrations of crushed tadpoles. Once the embryos had hatched into tadpoles, researchers tested their response to only the salamander odor. The tadpoles that were exposed to a higher concentration of the injured tadpole odour stayed motionless for longer in response to the salamander cue [BBC News]. The scientists say this demonstrates that these tadpoles learned as embryos that salamanders were more dangerous predators.

In the experiment, researchers presented a long sequence of pictures of faces paired with an outdoor scene, and finally showed the subject one landscape photo along with three faces, asking him to pick out the face that had originally be paired with the landscape.

Immediately, activity in the brain region called the hippocampus increased, followed 500 to 750 milliseconds later by eye movements directed toward one of the three faces. When the hippocampus was more active, the eyes lingered on the correct face. Less hippocampus activity occurred when the eyes dwelled on an incorrect face…. The results suggest that eye movements can reveal unconscious memories activated in the hippocampus
