When your heart stops beating, there is no blood getting to your brain. And so what happens is that within about 10 sec., brain activity ceases —as you would imagine. Yet paradoxically, 10% or 20% of people who are then brought back to life from that period, which may be a few minutes or over an hour, will report having consciousness. So the key thing here is, Are these real, or is it some sort of illusion?

if you look at the mind, consciousness, and the brain, the assumption that the mind and brain are the same thing is fine for most circumstances, because in 99% of circumstances we can't separate the mind and brain; they work at the exactly the same time. But then there are certain extreme examples, like when the brain shuts down, that we see that this assumption may no longer seem to hold true.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has mooted the idea of creating a new group within Barisan Nasional to allow people to directly join the ruling coalition as members.

“There are people who don’t want to be members of a component party but they like BN, so I proposed at the last BN meeting the creation of a group who are direct members of BN,” he told a 2,000-crowd at the Gerakan event.

Elaborating, Abdullah cited examples of Malays who prefer a multi-racial party and do not want to join Umno or its rival PAS, both Malay-based party.

I'll be giving a talk tomorrow at the Philly.net Code Camp!

In this talk we will look at code that works but could be improved.

We will discuss why it needs improvement and work through several examples of doing exactly that using patterns, practices, and tools along the way.

An emphasis will be placed on the Single Responsibility Principle, Dependency Injection, Inversion of Control, and the Service Locator Pattern.

In the shade of the trees where they have been picking olives all morning, in this wadi, south-east of Nablus, a Palestinian farmer, Jamal Otman Koarik, and two of his daughters share a lunch of home-baked bread, zatar, oil, courgettes and salad with three visitors. It's a bucolic scene that could have happened any time in the past century. But what makes it notable in 2008 is that the guests who have been helping Mr Koarik pick the olives are Israeli Jews: a rabbi, an anthropologist and a youth worker, Hellela Siew.

Asked why he and his volunteers make this often risky mission each year, the US-born rabbi says "if we really believe" the Biblical text that all human beings are made in God's image, "we have got to put our money where our mouth is and be here in an active way to defend human rights". And he also cites the "dialogue of the olive groves" in which Israelis and Palestinians who "have to live and die here together" have "no choice but to communicate"

Drishti

Drishti is a point of focus where the gaze rests during asana and meditation practice. Focusing on a drishti aids concentration, since it is easier to become distracted when the eyes are wandering all over the room. Each yoga pose has a specific drishti, which also aids in alignment.

Even though a drishti can be described as a fixed gaze, the eyes should always stay soft, never straining.

Examples: In Downward Facing Dog, the drishti is your navel.

Human evolution is grinding to a halt because of a shortage of older fathers in the West, according to a leading genetics expert.

Fathers over the age of 35 are more likely to pass on mutations, according to Professor Steve Jones, of University College London.

Speaking today at a UCL lecture entitled “Human evolution is over” Professor Jones will argue that there were three components to evolution – natural selection, mutation and random change. “Quite unexpectedly, we have dropped the human mutation rate because of a change in reproductive patterns,” Professor Jones told The Times.

“Human social change often changes our genetic future,” he said, citing marriage patterns and contraception as examples. Although chemicals and radioactive pollution could alter genetics, one of the most important mutation triggers is advanced age in men.

This is because cell divisions in males increase with age. “Every time there is a cell division, there is a chance of a mistake, a mutation, an error,”

A Brief History:

The Stetson Cavalry Hat

First worn during the Civil War, the current tradition of the Cavalry Hat (Cav Hat) is believed to have begun around 1964 among the new air cavalry squad 3/17 at Fort Benning, Georgia in order to create an element of esprit de corps. As units deployed to Vietnam, the custom began to spread to other Air Cavalry units.

By the end of Vietnam virtually all Air Cavalry units and some ground units had adopted the 'Cav Hat'. Stetson was the most common hat originally purchased by troopers and has thus become the defacto standard for the 'Cav Hat'.

The Stetson Cavalry Hat is not an issued item and is purchased by each individual trooper.

Over time many army units have created specific requirements regarding the proper manner to wear one's Cav hat. Examples of these requirements can be found on these pages:
