Chavez received a movie star welcome at the Venice Film Festival, where he walked the red carpet with director Oliver Stone for the premiere of the documentary "South of the Border."

"What's happening in Latin America is like a Renaissance," the Venezuelan leader told reporters. Chavez landed in Venice after visiting Iran and Turkmenistan.

Stone said he wanted to illustrate changes that put in power in many South American countries' leaders who represent the majority of their populations, a movement exemplified by Chavez. He cited Bolivian President Evo Morales, the first Indian to be elected president, and Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a well-known trade unionist.

"If you look now, there are seven presidents, eight countries with Chile, that are really moving away from the Washington consensus control," Stone said. "But in America, they don't get that story."

Morales: US planning coups in Latin America

The Bolivian president has accused the United States of planning coups in Latin America after Washington reached an agreement with Colombia over military bases.

"In Latin America, where there is a US military base there are military coups," Evo Morales told Bolivian immigrants living in Spain on Sunday.

"To the social movements of Europe and the world: Help us put an end to military bases in Latin American," he said, citing the Bolivian constitution that bans foreign bases on its soil.

According to US officials, American troops will continue to be involved in helping Colombia in counter-drug operations and in supporting its fight against leftist rebels.

However, Latin American governments believe that the US uses the regional war on drugs as a pretext to boost its regional military presence.

Morales claimed earlier that the United States was involved in a military coup in Honduras that ousted President Manuel Zelaya in June.

Over the weekend in a public address in his home patch of Villa Tupari in Chaparé, Professor Evo Morales (known as a natty dresser and President of the fastest growing country in South America) said that:

"The state will provide a house to any couple that gets married."

Honestly, this is not a joke. The population of South America's poorest country has just added a 6th social program to provide its poorest citizens with a basic need, that of a house to any couple that gets hitched. Evo continued:

don't think for a minute that he won't come through on this one, because the other five social programs and payments launched by his government so far have been resounding successes, including the old age pension, payment for meals for schoolchildren, the pre-/post natal payments for mothers who attend hospital during their pregnancies and make sure their young babies get all the necessary care until the age of two, and one-off payments for ex-soldiers

Hugo Chavez’ poodle, Evo Morales, the President of Bolivia charged the US military with leading the removal of Honduran President Zelaya from his bed chambers two weeks ago, parroting the official Bolivarian party line from Chavez;

“I have first-hand information that the empire, through the U.S. Southern Command, made the coup d’etat in Honduras,” President Morales said during a visit to the Uruguayan capital Montevideo.

The coup that saw Honduran President Manuel Zelaya swept up by the military on June 28 in his pajamas and expelled from the country “is an aggression, a provocation of the empire,” he added.

“Maybe I do not know Obama, but the imperial structure remains in force.”

Meanwhile Chavez has ramped up his anti-US rhetoric warning that he has information on other planned coups in the region in EL Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala. All of that gladhanding and smooching Obama did with Chavez got him this statement (quoted by El Universal);

Republican lawmakers have slammed US President Barack Obama for branding Honduras' political upheaval a "coup," saying he was aligning himself with leftist Latin American leaders.

"By calling this a coup and by early statements insisting on the reinstatement of Mr Zelaya, the administration now stands with the likes of (Hugo) Chavez, (Evo) Morales and (Daniel) Ortega, and not with the Honduran people," Republican Connie Mack said during a hearing by a panel of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"Zelaya was removed from office for his unconstitutional and illegal attempts to alter the constitution of Honduras for purely selfish reasons," said Congressman Chris Smith, a Republican from New Jersey.

ALBA bloc expands in Venezuela talks

The Bolivarian Alternative bloc grew to nine countries with new members Ecuador, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Antigua and Barbuda.

Other members include Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Dominica, Honduras and Nicaragua. Chavez has promoted the group as a socialist integration effort and an alternative to U.S.-proposed free trade pacts.

The group's acronym in Spanish, ALBA, means "dawn." Chavez told leaders at a summit on Wednesday that the effort is aimed at a "great battle for the independence of our America."

Leaders attending the talks included Ecuador's Rafael Correa, Bolivia's Evo Morales and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has ushered three new countries into a bloc of leftist-led allies.

Peru Indians Hail 'Historic' Day

Indigenous groups in Peru have called off protests after two land laws which led to deadly fighting were revoked.

Hailing victory, Amazonian Indian groups said it was an "historic day".

At least 34 people died during weeks of strikes against the legislation, which allowed foreign companies to exploit resources in the Amazon forest.

The violence provoked tension with Peru's neighbour, Bolivia, where Preisdent Evo Morales backed the Peruvian Indians' tribal rights.

"This is a historic day for indigenous people because it shows that our demands and our battles were just," said Daysi Zapata,

Tres arquitectos en Chile han propuesto una novedosa idea para resolver un diferendo limítrofe que ha enfrentado a su país con Bolivia, por 130 años: los expertos quieren construir un túnel que una el territorio boliviano con el Océano Pacífico.

De esta forma Bolivia volvería a tener el acceso al mar que perdió tras la Guerra del Pacífico con Chile, en 1879, y que se ha convertido en uno de los principales reclamos del presidente Evo Morales.

And this leads to the question I want to address, namely, Why isn't socialism dead?

The Peruvian economist, Hernando de Soto, has argued in his book, The Mystery of Capital, that the failure of the various socialist experiments of the twentieth century has left mankind with only one rational choice about which economic system to go with, namely, capitalism. Socialism, he maintained, has been so discredited that any further attempt to revive it would be sheer irrationality.

In addition to sending in the troops, Morales is also sending forth a good bit of inflammatory rhetoric. He refers to the foreign companies operating Bolivia's natural resources as having "looted" them, and his decision to send in troops on the traditional socialist holiday, May the First, was clearly not a coincidence.

Two men accused of being behind a plot to kill Bolivian President Evo Morales are escorted to San Pedro prison in La Paz at the weekend

THE Bolivian authorities have released the remains of an Irishman shot dead by security forces in the wake of an alleged plot to assassinate the country's president.

An Irish diplomat is meeting officials from the ministry of justice in Bolivia today amid reports Michael Dwyer was executed in an illegal operation.

The 24-year-old was shot dead by police in the city of Santa Cruz last Thursday after they claimed to have intercepted an alleged plot to assassinate Bolivia's socialist president, Evo Morales.

The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed Mr Dwyer's body had been released into the custody of an Irish official who travelled to Bolivia to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. The repatriation process is expected to take a week.
