Good Etiquette
If there ever is a gentleman’s game, it’s golf. Because of this, there are certain things that should be observed in the course of the game. Good golf etiquette means you don’t hold other players up, you are conscious of other players, you don’t make too much noise in the cause of the game distracting others, you make sure when you are swinging that nobody is in harm’s way, you play with the spirit of good sportsmanship etc.

Remembrance Sunday is approaching and poppies are on sale to raise money for the Royal British Legion. But what is the etiquette when it comes to wearing one?

Worn to remember the nation's war dead, the red poppy is a widely recognised emblem.

Millions of poppies were sold last year and the appeal raised £30m for the Royal British Legion's charitable work.

The tradition was started by American teacher Moina Bell Michael, who sold silk poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-service community. In 1920 the poppy was proclaimed the national emblem of remembrance in the US, and in the UK, the first poppy day was in 1921. Last year Britons bought 26m poppies, but others choose not to. Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow famously refuses to wear one on air, reportedly saying he does not want to bow to "poppy fascism''.

clipper's remarks: The first Flag Code came during a time of similar national upheaval. In 1942, Congress passed the first resolution to endorse flag etiquette, including the proper way to fold, display and dispose of the flag.
Massachusetts entered the debate in 1970, when Leominister teenager Valerie Goguen was sentenced to six months in jail for using an American flag patch on a pair of jeans. The Supreme Court overturned his conviction in the 1974 case Smith v. Goguen. Goguen still lives in Leominster, and is still adamant that the case is about love for the flag.

Sometime between five and eight years ago -- the two men differ in their recollections -- Wilmington American Legion Commander Joe Steen approached his state senator, Bruce Tarr

Steen was incensed by a story he read about a group of Texas protesters stomping on an American flag, and he had a request -- a bill that would require Massachusetts schoolchildren to recite the U.S. Flag Code along with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Among the provisions in the code: Never let an American flag touch the ground; do not display the flag on clothing; in a row of flags, always display the American flag on the far right; the correct way to dispose of an American flag is by burning.

Over the years and many trips to committee, that bill morphed into S371, a measure that would make flag etiquette a part of public-school civics classes.

Tarr said the bill does not address flag burning, which was deemed protected speech by the Supreme Court in 1990

Compliment your date on her appearance. She exerted some effort to look nice for your night out and it would make her feel good to let her know that her efforts at looking attractive for you is noticed and appreciated.

Try to keep things natural, but reading on dating tips won't hurt. Just take it easy try holding those sexual urges of yours. Imagining her on sexy lingerie or corsets and basques may make it a bit more wholesome than pushing your way to sex. But if she makes the first move, then why not?

Getting hideously drunk at a dinner party and embarrassing yourself is certainly nothing new.

As far back as the 9th Century, the beautifully named 'Dunhuang Bureau of Etiquette' insisted that local officials use the following letter template (dated 856) when sending apologies to offended dinner hosts. The guilty party would copy the template text, enter the dinner host's name, sign the letter and then deliver with head bowed.

The letter was discovered, alongside thousands of other documents, in a sealed cave library in western China.

Translated Transcript

Yesterday, having drunk too much, I was intoxicated as to pass all bounds; but none of the rude and coarse language I used was uttered in a conscious state. The next morning, after hearing others speak on the subject, I realised what had happened, whereupon I was overwhelmed with confusion and ready to sink into the earth with shame.

A CHILDBIRTH educator has given the old tradition of "wetting the baby's head" a novel twist, hosting ante-natal classes for blokes at the pub

The one-night "beer and bubs" classes will educate expectant dads on practical aspects of childbirth over an old-fashioned counter meal and a frosty beer or soft drink

The classes are aimed at busy men who might not make standard ante-natal classes with their wives or might be less inclined to speak up at them

Childbirth educator Donna Sheppard-Wright said the classes, pioneered in Sydney five years ago, were popular

"Everyone's said it's really positive," she said. "Lots of groups in the community have embraced the idea of men doing ante-natal education

"Often men, if they're in a clinical environment with a lot of people sitting in a big circle with bright light, it can be a bit confronting

Topics include birthing techniques, birthing etiquette and practical ways for men to comfort and support their partners during pregnancy and labour
