We have discovered many odd clocks at Gear Live and this prototype is no exception. Made out one of our fave toys, the Etch-A-Sketch Clock, built on the Arduino platform, was designed by the New York mechanical engineer Angela Yuan. When a minute goes by, the device tilts, shakes to remove the current display, and changes it to update the time. We think it is a novel idea and hope Ms.Yuan continues her creative streak.

Where did the Etch-A-Sketch come from? The inventor's name is Arthur Granjean, and he lived in France. Ohio Arts bought the rights to the idea and manufactured the first Etch-A-Sketch on July 12, 1960 [Source: Etch-a-Sketch].

Turn an Etch-a-Sketch into a Kitschy Picture Frame in Just a Few Minutes

The Ingredients

An Etch A Sketch

Some photo paper and a printer

Strong glue like Goop or Gorilla Glue

A picture frame hook or easel, stolen from an old frame

A photo-editing program (We’ll use Photoshop CS2, but you can use the photo editing program of your choice.)

Switch up the photo in the frame every so often, and let your friends think you create new Etch A Sketch masterpieces whenever you’re bored.

All Things Considered, May 2, 2007 · There's a child's toy called "Etch a Sketch." Perhaps you remember it? You use it to make intricate designs on a screen, then give the screen a shake — and your drawings disappear.

That's pretty much what happened to Northern Europe and the British Isles during the last ice age. For the past 10,000 years or so, Britain's climate has been welcoming and it has allowed humans to comfortably settle in. But during the last ice age, these areas were uninhabitable.

"It's very cold, [and] it's treeless," says Clive Gamble, an archaeologist at the University of London. "In some places, it's described as polar desert. It's not somewhere you'd want to be."

There were early humans in Britain before the ice arrived, but when it got too cold, they fled to Southern France and Spain.
