Better Golfers See Bigger Holes

Better golfers are more likely to view the hole as larger than their bogey-prone counterparts, finds a new study.

"Golfers have said that when they play well, the hole looks as big as a bucket or basketball hoop," said Jessica Witt, a psychologist at Purdue University in Indiana. "When they do not play well, they've been quoted as saying the hole looks like a dime or the inside of a donut."

Witt's team asked 46 golfers to estimate the size of the hole after playing a round of golf. From a poster, they selected one of nine black holes, ranging in size from 3.5 to 5 inches (9 to 13 cm).

In reality, the diameter of a golf hole is 4.3 inches (10.8 cm).

Those who selected larger holes had better scores on the course that day.

To clarify the results, the researchers had golfers putt on a traditional putting mat in a lab. The golfers either judged the hole size from memory after putting or did so while viewing the hole.

Effort to cut Medicaid spending may actually boost costs

A Strickland administration initiative designed to reduce Medicaid spending on costly psychotropic drugs could actually cost the state money in the long run, a new study concludes.

The administration touted savings up to $47 million by requiring pre-authorization for a handful of specialized drugs used primarily to treat bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and other serious mental-health conditions.

Even before the plan was implemented, however, the savings estimate was lowered to $20 million. And by the time state Budget Director Pari Sabety appeared before a legislative budget committee on Feb. 26, the savings estimate had been eliminated altogether.

A study

done by Howard Fleeter, a Columbus economics consultant and former Ohio State University professor, argues that the policy change might not save money, but could result in unintended added costs of $23.2 million to $38.7 million annually.

Black gold might not be as scarce as we thought. This week oil prices escalated to a record $139 per barrel, but that may partly be because the amount of available oil in known reserves has been significantly underestimated.

So says Richard Pike, a former oil-industry adviser and chief executive of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, who blames flawed statistical calculations.

Adding the numbers for each reservoir ignores statistical information about the extremes of the distribution, giving a result which underestimates the true total figure for all the reservoirs.

According to published estimates, there are 1200 billion barrels still to be extracted, but Pike says there could in fact be twice as much. "The figures are almost meaningless and just provide a conservative estimate for shareholders."

Removal of Crown of Thorns in Had Tai Muang Reef

The newly discovered coral reef off Had Tai Muang beach, Phang Nga province, rests in proximity to Kao Lumphi-Had Tai Maung National Park . The reef is situated approximately 600 metres in the ocean, away from park Headquarters with an estimate size of 1.7 square kilometres. The reef is unique in that it still maintains its richness as well as its high aesthetic and ecological value. Furthermore, the reef not only plays an important role as a nesting site for economically significant species for the local fishermen, but it also plays a crucial role as a feeding and nesting site for sea turtles whom come to lay eggs on this very beach, especially the Leatherback turtles; the largest sea turtle that continues to return to Had Tai Muang beach to lay its eggs year after year.

Homebuilders face disastrous £3bn landslide

Britain's housebuilders will see at least £3bn wiped off the value of their land assets as a further 1,300 jobs in the sector go this week.

Figures calculated by broker Panmure Gordon on behalf of The Observer suggest that if, as expected, the housing market falls by 17.5 per cent - seen as a conservative estimate - land values will deteriorate by £3bn. 'It could easily be a billion more if the market turns down further,

The slump will create new demands from banks for housebuilders to shore up their devastated balance sheets with fresh capital. This week the UK's most profitable housebuilder, Persimmon, will disclose that it is cutting at least 1,000 jobs, a fifth of its workforce. And Kier Residential is to axe 300, 60 per cent of its staff. The news, to be revealed by Building magazine, means the quoted building sector has cut 3,200 jobs in seven days. Last week, Barratt laid off 1,000 staff and Taylor Wimpey cut 900 jobs.

The results of field studies carried out between 2005 and 2007 found a significant number of Cambodians and Vietnamese rely on traditional medicine.

The growing illegal wildlife trade in the region is fuelled by the difficulty of sourcing prescribed ingredients, including parts, from globally threatened species.

The supply of many wild animals and plants for medicine in Cambodia and Vietnam is becoming scarce due to overexploitation

Some of the trade is illegal and threatening endangered species. In Vietnam, we estimate between 5-10 tiger skeletons are sold annually to be used in traditional medicine.

Over 800 types of plants--approximately 35 percent of the country's native species--are used in Traditional Khmer Medicine.

Traditional medicine systems in Cambodia and Vietnam are important components of both national healthcare systems, and are often the only means of healthcare for rural communities

The recent court order directing Google to hand over data to Viacom about every YouTube video ever watched strikes many people as an absurd overreach of the law into the privacy of anyone who has ever used YouTube (i.e., almost everyone on the Internet). Google should definitely keep fighting the ruling if it can.

But if it can’t, perhaps it should comply with it in a creative way. The data in question are data logs containing the records of every video watched on YouTube, by whom, and at what times. The court is also ordering that Google hand over all videos that have ever been taken down for any reason. The logs alone take up 12 terabytes. Google should print them out and deliver them on paper.

It would literally fill up the Library of Congress. That is roughly the equivalent of all the printed books in the Library of Congress (by one estimate, others put it at 20 terabytes—either way, it’s a lot of paper). The court order never states what form, the data must be delivered in.

The risk of extinction for many species may have been seriously underestimated, according to new research published in the journal Nature.

Current methods used to assess species on the brink overlook some key factors, a team of scientists claims.

These include the ratio of males to females in a population, which can have a profound influence on survival.

For some species, the risk could be a hundred times greater than previously thought, the team calculates.

Currently, two key factors are used to estimate risk - the birth-death ratio, and environmental conditions such as habitat destruction.

But the US researchers - Brett Melbourne and Alan Hastings - believe other elements are under-weighted.

As well as the male-to-female ratio, they point to the physical size of individuals in a species, and some aspects of behaviour.

They found that when populations are small and vulnerable, changes in the sex ratio can have a huge impact on survivability.

Hurtling through space 31 years after its launch, the Voyager 2 spacecraft has sent back the most detailed view yet of the shock wave that marks the thinning of the solar wind, the charged particles streaming from the sun.

That would mean they have exited the solar system and entered the interstellar medium. NASA engineers estimate that both probes' plutonium power packs have the potential to keep them broadcasting data until 2025.

BEIJING — With less than six weeks before it plays host to the Olympic sailing regatta, the city of Qingdao, China, has mobilized thousands of people and an armada of small boats to clean up an algal bloom choking the coastline and threatening to impede the competition.

Local officials have begun an intense effort to clean up the algae by mid-July. News reports estimate as many as 20,000 people have either volunteered or been ordered to participate in the operation, while 1,000 boats are scooping algae out of the Yellow Sea. The country’s official news agency, Xinhua, reported that algae currently cover a third of the coastal waters designated for the Olympic competition.

Water quality has been a concern for the Olympic sailing events. Many coastal Chinese cities dump untreated sewage into the sea, and rivers and tributaries emptying into coastal waters are often contaminated with high levels of nitrates from agricultural and industrial runoff.
