How counterfeit, defective computer components from China are getting into U.S. warplanes and ships

The American military faces a growing threat of potentially fatal equipment failure—and even foreign espionage—because of counterfeit computer components used in warplanes, ships, and communication networks. Fake microchips flow from unruly bazaars in rural China to dubious kitchen-table brokers in the U.S. and into complex weapons. Senior Pentagon officials publicly play down the danger, but government documents, as well as interviews with insiders, suggest possible connections between phony parts and breakdowns.

In November 2005, a confidential Pentagon-industry program that tracks counterfeits issued an alert that "BAE Systems experienced field failures," meaning military equipment malfunctions, which the large defense contractor traced to

fake microchips. Chips are the tiny electronic circuits found in computers and other gear.

PHILIP DORLING has been a journalist for just three months. He's made quite an impact. So much so that when he and his wife were about to wrestle their two children out of their Canberra house and into the car last Tuesday morning, eight agents from the Australian Federal Police lobbed on their doorstep armed with search warrants.

Dated September 17 and signed by the Australian Capital Territory's Chief Magistrate, Ron Cahill, the warrants authorised the agents to search the journalist's home. For the next five hours they went through his house and his rubbish and took away a laptop, a mobile phone, a diary, a few random documents and a copy of The Canberra Times dated June 14 — more than three months earlier.

Its front-page story by Dorling — "Revealed: our spy targets" — triggered Tuesday's raid. The story embarrassed the defence and diplomatic establishments by revealing that Australia was focusing its espionage efforts against allies Japan and South Korea, as well as China and Nort

Which leaves us with the actions of the federal government. They truly deserve the worst opprobrium. Prosectors now admit they KNEW AT THE TIME that Ethel was innocent. At worst, she knew that Julius was spying but never aided or abetted it in any way. Yet they went at Rosenberg hammer and tong to get the confession they wanted. They drew her into the net and promised him she would die with him. This is unconscionable and an utterly depraved abuse of the judicial system. Today, such lawyers would be prosecuted themselves and disbarred. Unfortunately, the government has shielded its prosecutors’ deliberations from the light of day until today and no one knew the extent of the misconduct.

The N.Y. Times yesterday published an interview with Morton Sobell in which he admitted spying for the Russians and conceded that his friend Julius Rosenberg had done so as well. He confirmed that Ethel Rosenberg had not been involved in the conspiracy

“He was a spy, but no more than I was,” Sobell replied. “He gave nothing, in the end it was nothing. The sketch was negligible and the government lied in presenting it as the secret to the atomic bomb. They never harmed this country, because what they transmitted was wrong.”

US to strike Iran in coming weeks

The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran's weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country's De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.

The report claimed that the Dutch operation had been "extremely successful," and had been stopped because the US military was planning to hit targets that were "connected with the Dutch espionage action."

The impending air-strike on Iran was to be carried out by unmanned aircraft "within weeks," the report claimed, quoting "well placed" sources.

According to the report, whether the United States and Western countries succeed in thwarting the Islamic Republic's nuclear ambitions diplomatically, through sanctions, or whether a US strike on Iran is eventually decided upon, Jerusalem has begun preparing for a separate, independent military strike.

So here we have a massive assault led by Federal Government law enforcement agencies on left-wing dissidents and protesters who have committed no acts of violence or illegality whatsoever, preceded by months-long espionage efforts to track what they do. And as extraordinary as that conduct is, more extraordinary is the fact that they have received virtually no attention from the national media and little outcry from anyone. And it's not difficult to see why. As the recent "overhaul" of the 30-year-old FISA law illustrated -- preceded by the endless expansion of surveillance state powers, justified first by the War on Drugs and then the War on Terror -- we've essentially decided that we want our Government to spy on us without limits. There is literally no police power that the state can exercise that will cause much protest from the political and media class and, therefore, from the citizenry.

Revealed: The Internet's Biggest Security Hole

Two security researchers have demonstrated a new technique to stealthily intercept internet traffic on a scale previously presumed to be unavailable to anyone outside of intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency.

The tactic exploits the internet routing protocol BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) to let an attacker surreptitiously monitor unencrypted internet traffic anywhere in the world, and even modify it before it reaches its destination.

The method conceivably could be used for corporate espionage, nation-state spying or even by intelligence agencies looking to mine internet data without needing the cooperation of ISPs.

The technique, devised by Pilosov, doesn't exploit a bug or flaw in BGP. It simply exploits the natural way BGP works.

To intercept data, an eavesdropper would advertise a range of IP addresses he wished to target that was narrower than the chunk advertised by other networks.

The attack is called an IP hijack and, on its face, isn't new.

MINSK, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - A Belarusian court has sentenced U.S. citizen Emanuel Zeltser to three years in prison for industrial espionage and the use of forged documents, the country's Supreme Court said on Monday.

The Soviet-born lawyer and financial expert was detained by the Belarusian security service along with his secretary on arrival in Belarus on March 12, and accused of using forged documents. In late May, Zeltser was officially charged with drug smuggling and possession, and later with industrial spying.

"Minsk's city court, which considered Zeltser's case, found that his culpability in industrial espionage and the use of forged documents was proven," the Supreme Court said.

However, the court absolved Zeltser of the drug possession charges. His secretary Vladlena Funk was also handed a year in jail for illegally gathering commercial information and using forged documents.

Born in the Soviet republic of Moldova, Zeltser emigrated in the 1970s

MINSK — A U.S. lawyer went on trial behind closed doors in Belarus on Wednesday charged with carrying forged documents, drug offenses and industrial espionage — crimes that could carry up to seven years in prison.

Emmanuel Zeltser, a New York-based specialist in Russian law and organized crime, was arrested in March at the height of a diplomatic dispute between Belarus and the United States.

He was initially charged with using forged documents, and the other accusations were added subsequently.

“Under Belarussian law, he faces up to seven years in prison if found guilty,” said his lawyer, Dmitry Goryachko.

He gave no details of the court’s first, hour-long sitting on grounds that the trial was closed. Also standing trial on the documents charge was Zeltser’s secretary, Vladlena Funk.

“My client’s physical state can be described as stable but serious,” Goryachko said.

The U.S. State Department has expressed concern over Zeltser’s detention

Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin. They generally broadcast voices reading streams of numbers, words, letters (sometimes using a spelling alphabet), tunes or Morse code.

The voices that can be heard on these stations are often mechanically generated. They are in a wide variety of languages, and the voices are usually women's, though sometimes men's or children's voices are used.

Evidence supports popular assumptions that the broadcasts are channels of communication used to send messages to spies. This has not been publicly acknowledged by any government that may operate a numbers station, but in one case, Cuban numbers station espionage has been publicly prosecuted in a United States federal court.^[1]
