Under proposals due to be ratified at the summit, countries which cut down
rainforests and convert them to plantations of trees such as oil palms would
still be able to classify the result as forest and could receive millions of
dollars meant for preserving them. An earlier version of the text ruled out
such a conversion but has been deleted, and the EU delegation – headed by
Britain – has blocked its reinsertion.

Environmentalists say plantations are in no way a substitute for the lost
natural forest in terms of wildlife, water production or, crucially, as a
store of the carbon dioxide which is emitted into the atmosphere when
forests are destroyed and intensifies climate change.

They continue to just rewrite the press releases of politicians and corporations.
Even Mother Jones got duped.

Tags: green. hopi, lazy media, navajo, pandering media

<clipSource>http://bsnorrell.blogspot.com/2009/10/absurd-one-sided-media-coverage-of-so.html</clipSource>

Why Winning the Nobel Peace Prize Could Hurt Obama

clipped by: pennyserenade

Clip Source: www.time.com

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most powerful platforms in the world. Winners get immediate global attention and the chance to meet and influence leaders and governments everywhere. Think of it as a megaphone through which worthy, but very often obscure, activists or politicians or environmentalists can shout their message to a gathered crowd.

That's just one of the reasons the Nobel Committee's decision to award this year's Peace Prize to Barack Obama is such a stunning surprise. Obama has the world's most powerful platform: the White House. And you don't need a megaphone when you're the U.S. President. You speak and people listen.

<clipSource>http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1929385,00.html</clipSource>
