MANILA, Philippines—An environmentalist group Sunday condemned the “gruesome slaughter” of age-old trees in a plaza fronting the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila, a week before the celebration of Creation Month which starts Monday.

Ecowaste Coalition said 29 healthy narra, mahogany, mango, neem, fire and Indian trees in Plaza Roma were cut down last Monday in violation of the cutting and balling permit issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The DENR issued a permit to the Intramuros Administration on Aug. 5 to make way for the latter’s plan to re-landscape Plaza Roma.

Standing in the hot sun in front of Large open pit coal mine in central California, John McCain again issued a plea for more offshore coal mining, suggesting it would not take long for consumers to see the benefits.

The Republican presidential candidate did not mention that the most promising spots for quick offshore production are off the coast of California, where state and local officials oppose coal mining. McCain wants to lift the federal ban and leave the decision to the states. While there is increasing support for coal mining off the coast of Florida, it would take years to explore and dig new deep coal mines in the Gulf of Mexico.

The international organization has grown to 86,000 members and become an industry in Petrini's hometown, Bra, Italy. There are Slow Food restaurants, a university and a hotel. You can buy a cashmere truffle-hunting vest embroidered with the Slow Food snail logo at the main office in Bra.

The group's budget is about $39 million, and subsidized by the Italian government. Much of the organization's work involves identifying traditional foods, like Ethiopian white honey or Amalfi sfusato lemons, and designing ways to help the people who produce them.

Its philosophy — that food is about much more than cooking and eating — is often hammered home by Petrini on his frequent trips around the world.

Here's some good news for anyone sick of being force-fed a relentless diet of pernicious environmentalist hogwash:

Last week, The New York Times noted that the advertising industry is pulling back from green-themed marketing, having "grasped the public's growing skepticism over ads with environmental messages.

And advertisers' concerns are buttressed by the recent sales figures for magazines that have published a "Green Issue" this year. Time's Earth Day issue was the newsweekly's third-lowest-selling issue of 2008 so far, according to ABC Rapid Report. A typical issue of Time sells 93,000 or so copies on the newsstand; the April 28 installment, which substituted green for red in the magazine's trademarked cover design, sold only 72,000. (As usual, The Onion nailed it.)

Look for politicians to figure out sometime around 2012 that everyone stopped listening to bogus global warming sermons in 2008.

The public agrees: Enough is enough.

Slow Food Savors Its Big Moment

AT the end of the summer, the gastronomic organization called Slow Food USA will host a little party for more than 50,000 people in San Francisco.

To get things ready, the mayor let the group dig up the lawn in front of City Hall and plant a quarter-acre garden. It will be the centerpiece of the festival, ambitiously named Slow Food Nation.

Events will pop up all around the city over Labor Day weekend. Fifteen architects have volunteered to build elaborate pavilions dedicated to things like pickles, coffee and salami. Lecture halls have been booked, politicians invited and dinner parties planned. Nearly $2 million has been raised.

(CNN) -- The liberal environmentalist Green Party nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney as its presidential candidate Saturday.

McKinney, 53, held off three rivals to win the party's nomination during its convention in Chicago, Illinois. She picked journalist and activist Rosa Clemente as her running mate.

Green Party spokeswoman Scott McLarty acknowledged McKinney was a "long shot" for the White House, but said, "Every vote that she gets helps the Green Party."

"The United States needs an alternative party," McLarty said. "The narrow two-party system we have right now has not served us very well."

In 2004 she ran again and won with a low-key campaign in which she largely avoided controversy. But voters ousted her again in 2006 after she was accused of a physical altercation with a U.S. Capitol Police officer who questioned her after failing to recognize her at a security checkpoint.

A US appeals court struck down landmark air-pollution regulations on Friday, shocking both environmental and industry groups with a decision that could severely hamper efforts to curb smog and acid rain.

The ruling, which one environmentalist called “the legal equivalent of a dirty bomb,” threatened to overshadow a separate decision Friday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to delay potential regulations for carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act.

Though many had expected the carbon dioxide non-decision, environmentalists were blindsided by the court’s decision to throw out the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), a programme designed to reduce East Coast air pollution by cleaning up coal-fired power plants in the Midwest.

“It is without a doubt the worst news of the year when it comes to air pollution,” says Frank O’Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch, an environmental group

TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese sailor and environmentalist Kenichi Horie has completed a 110-day solo voyage across the Pacific Ocean in a boat propelled by wave power to claim another world first.

Weak waves and opposing ocean currents delayed his arrival, which was originally set for late May.

"When waves were weak, the boat slowed down. That's the problem to be solved," the adventurer told reporters Saturday from aboard his catamaran Suntory Mermaid II off the Kii Peninsula in western Japan.

The 9.5 metre (31-foot) boat is equipped with two special fins at the front which can move like a dolphin's tail each time the vessel rises or falls with the rhythm of the waves.

The speech is very idealistic, but I hope it moved some of the members to start making some positive changes in their countries and the world. Since 1992 we can all probably come up with many positive and negative changes that have happened. The world probably would be a better place if adults behaved in the same way they teach their kids to act.

So where is Severn now? According to this Wikipedia article she graduated from Yale in 2002, hosted a television program called Suzuki’s Nature Quest on the Discovery channel, launched an Internet-based think tank called The Skyfish Project, in 2006 went back to grad school at the University of Victoria, and is still an active environmentalist.

The majority of the British public is still not convinced that climate change is caused by humans - and many others believe scientists are exaggerating the problem, according to an exclusive poll for The Observer.

The results have shocked campaigners who hoped that doubts would have been silenced by a report last year by more than 2,500 scientists for the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which found a 90 per cent chance that humans were the main cause of climate change and warned that drastic action was needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Lakes across Canada face being turned into mine dump sites

Lakes are in B.C., Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, NWT and Nunavut

Bush pilot Doug Beaumont and environmentalist Jim Bourquin fish on Kluela Lake, downstream from the planned dump site for the Red Chris gold and copper mining project in northwestern B.C.

16 Canadian lakes are slated to be officially but quietly "reclassified" as toxic dump sites for mines. The lakes include prime wilderness fishing lakes from B.C. to Newfoundland

Environmentalists say the process amounts to a "hidden subsidy" to mining companies, allowing them to get around laws against the destruction of fish habitat.

Under the Fisheries Act, it's illegal to put harmful substances into fish-bearing waters. But, under a little-known subsection known as Schedule Two of the mining effluent regulations, federal bureaucrats can redefine lakes as "tailings impoundment areas."

That means mining companies don't need to build containment ponds for toxic mine tailings.
