Container Gardening for Small Spaces

I just saw this great idea for a container garden by Suzanne Forsling for the Juneau Empire in her article How does your garden grow? She came up with a very clever and economical solution for gardening in a small, difficult environment by using rain gutters as planters.

She attached three "rows" of gutters to the side of her house. First, she drilled a few holes in the bottom of the gutters for drainage (although am wondering if you could just hang them at a slight angle and let the water run out the end....), then filled with halfway with Miracle Grow Garden Soil and dirt and planted the seeds, in this case, rows of lettuce, French breakfast radish, Swiss chard, beets and turnips.

Resulting in perfect garden rows, relatively safe from weeds and garden pests and rodents. A brilliant idea for urban lots where you don't have a lot of space for gardening.

“standardizing” is simply setting down what we believe is our best shot at what should work. Once reality sets in, there are nearly always things nobody thought of – opportunities to learn. Capturing those moments is impossible if there is no consistent baseline in the first place.

And, just for the sake of argument, let’s say that the process, as designed, works pretty well. The question must then be asked: “Are we able to provide our customers exactly what they need, exactly when they needed it, on demand, one-by-one, perfect quality, in a perfectly safe environment?” If the answer to that question even includes a hesitation, then it there is work to be done.

Respect your people. Simplify the things that should be simple. Let them focus their creativity on something that matters, not on how to get through the way without screwing up.

Integrity of the federal organic label

consumers, who at times must pay twice as much for organic products, are not always getting what they expect: foods without pesticides and other chemicals, produced in a way that is gentle to the environment.

The market's expansion is fueling tension over whether the federal program should be governed by a strict interpretation of "organic" or broadened to include more products by allowing trace elements of non-organic substances. The argument is not over whether the non-organics pose a health threat, but whether they weaken the integrity of the federal organic label.

In response to complaints, the USDA inspector general's office has widened an investigation of whether products carrying the label meet national standards. The probe is also looking into the department's oversight of private certifiers who are hired by farmers and food producers and inspect products to determine whether they can use the label.

Three airplanes, flying three to five miles behind each other, would save fuel by staying in formation.

To calculate differences in fuel efficiency, the team used performance models of the airline's planes. Flight plans similar to what the team proposes could yield fuel savings of up to 12 percent, Schwartz said.

In addition to saving fuel, formation flight can cut emissions of the greenhouse gases known as nitrogen oxides by one fourth.
