The 9,000-year-old remains of a mother and her baby discovered off the coast of Israel provide the earliest concrete evidence of human TB, say researchers.

The bones were excavated from Alit-Yam, an ancient Neolithic village near Haifa, which has been submerged in the Mediterranean for thousands of years.

The experts from University College London and Tel-Aviv University used DNA technology to confirm the bacterium.

Others have found remains that hint at TB dating from about 500,000 years ago.

The Israel bones, discovered by Dr Helen Donoghue and Dr Mark Spigelman, prove the disease is at least 3,000 years older than previously confirmed in other remains found in Italy. The watery grave provided the ideal environment to preserve the skeleton and its DNA.

The size of the infant's bones, and the extent of TB damage, suggest the mother passed the disease to her baby shortly after birth.

One theory is that TB originally spread from cattle to humans.

Gameplay will revolve around the player character’s manhunt through a fictional region of Africa and will be entirely open-ended, with the player being able to ally with anyone he/she chooses. The player’s choices are completely unfettered, giving a sandbox style of gameplay and allowing the story to progress at the speed the player chooses. Instead of using individual maps, the game will take place in a sprawling African landscape, with terrain ranging from savannah to jungle. The gameplay area will be 50 km2 (19.3 sq mi). Some members of the Ubisoft Montreal team spent two weeks in several locations in Africa filming and photographing native wildlife. The team will use the animal footage and environment photos to create an extremely realistic environment.

Statistics demonstrate that, conversely, young men are the most vulnerable to actual attack in towns and cities, while women are more likely to be attacked in their own homes by someone they know well. However, these figures are possibly skewed by the fact that if women are afraid to go out on the streets alone they are less likely to become victims of crime in the urban environment.

So why not pick a clean fuel and develop it to the nth degree? Sounds simple enough. Unfortunately, it’s as complicated as a Chinese puzzle. We need fossil fuels to produce the clean fuel that allows us to use an alternative fueled future car. There are clean fuels like electricity with zero CO2 emissions, but the majority of electricity is produced at power plants that use fossil fuels.

In the pageant of competing clean fuel, synthetic fuels come in last place. Although only slightly better than fossil fuels, they may work as a transition fuel since they can be blended with gas or diesel to produce lower levels of pollutants. With gas pipelines already in the ground, another transition fuel is natural gas. Both natural gas and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) produce fewer emissions and are clean-burning fuels that don’t threaten soils or ground or surface water. Biogas is another semi-clean fuel that can be blended with hydrogen to create fewer emissions. Ultra-low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) can be blended with biodiesel to reduce emissions, but burning 100% biodiesel may release excess nitrogen oxides, and fossil fuels are used in the production process.

Trashing Batteries for Brighter Sidewalks

We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.
