VisionSpring won a Skoll Award for social entrepreneurship last week. The honor, worth more than three-quarters of a million dollars over three years, highlights the budding collaboration between the design and development communities.

VisionSpring is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers developing world entrepreneurs to sell affordable eyeglasses with its "Business in a Bag" model. The innovative product was developed by the global design consultancy Ideo with grants from the Open Society Institute and Rockefeller Foundation. More than 400 million of the world's poorest people do not have access to affordable eyeglasses, so the simple, affordable and highly portable VisionSpring model has a ready-made market and has succeeded predictably.

The Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Foundation (CCPF), traces its beginnings to the Camara de Comercio de Filipinas established by virtue of the Royal Decree of April 19, 1886 issued by the Queen Regent Maria Cristina of Spain.

The CCP was the only trade and commerce group comprising Spanish and Filipino traders. CCP members like Gonzalo Puyat, Toribio Teodoro and Ramon Fernandez started to espouse the cause of Filipino entrepreneurship to such an extent that they gave birth to the National Economic Protectionism Association (NEPA), which was established to protect Philippine industry against powerful American business interests.

Rich Germans demand higher taxes

A group of rich Germans has launched a petition calling for the government to make wealthy people pay higher taxes.

The group say they have more money than they need, and the extra revenue could fund economic and social programmes to aid Germany's economic recovery.

Germany could raise 100bn euros (£91bn) if the richest people paid a 5% wealth tax for two years

"The path out of the crisis must be paved with massive investment in ecology, education and social justice," they say in the petition.

Those who had "made a fortune through inheritance, hard work, hard-working, successful entrepreneurship, or investment" should contribute by paying more to alleviate the crisis.

The group held a demonstration in Berlin on Wednesday to draw attention to their plans, throwing fake banknotes into the air.

When Florida politics come up I always encourage my friends to get out and support this man. He's the one!!!! Crist is a political climber of the worst kind. I believe, at heart, he is a Democrat (when once that was not a bad thing in Florida) but chose to run as a Republican because of a Jeb Bush strong Republican state. As one pundit pointed out, Crist never runs for re-election...he's climbing the ladder. Floridian conservatives need to take back the GOP flag...even if the Party Leadership is trying to play the political odds game.

Leading national Republicans rushed to endorse Crist.

Because so many companies do business with state governments, governors are fundraising dynamos, so a Crist nomination would not burden the national party, which helps explain why party leaders like him.

Crist appeared at a rally with Barack Obama promoting the $787 billion stimulus that got no votes from House Republicans and only three from Republican senators. He is a climate-change worrywart who wants to cap Florida's carbon emissions. He has chosen his former campaign manager to serve as a placeholder in the Senate during the crucial next 16 months.

Rubio, whose parents fled Cuba in 1959, says, "It is hard to be apolitical when you are raised by exiles." He worries that his children's generation "will be the first to inherit a diminished country." His preventive medicine includes limited government, tax reform, spending restraint and removal of all impediments to the entrepreneurship

One of the more pernicious myths surrounding the debate over healthcare is the oft repeated claim that conservatives do not want reform. Nonsense! What we do not want is the warm bucket of snake oil currently being sold to the American people by this administration. Conservatives have long argued for the need to reduce mandated benefits, reduce the reliance on third-party payers and get rid of public policies that hinder entrepreneurship and innovation. This is the kind of reform conservatives want - the right kind of reform.

Because the number of Americans that are actually denied medical care is zero, the administration has chosen to cite the fact that 47 million Americans lack medical insurance (another myth) as the reason for its urgency in passing a huge bill that congressmen can’t be bothered to read. Negotiation = Entrepreneurship?

Do you have to be a negotiator to be an entrepreneur or do you have to be an entrepreneur to be a negotiator?

There is synergy between these two roles. Merriam-Webster defines an entrepreneur as “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.” According to Dr. Chester Karrass, good negotiators have a high need for achievement.

To achieve, it could be argued, you have to be ready to take risks. The overlap between an entrepreneur and a negotiator comes down to assuming risk. So, people who do best in negotiations are hungry for success, and are willing to take a risk to reach that success. Ditto for entrepreneurs.

It is not really surprising that good negotiators are entrepreneurial, because what they are doing is putting themselves out there in a bid to succeed. So, you don’t have to an entrepreneur to be a negotiator, but you must be entrepreneurial.

Cutting taxes, a mechanism that has proven so effective, so often, I can't believe anyone would even try to dispute them... cutting taxes lifts all boats. Tax cuts are the opposite of a "stimulus" package. They are a rallying cry for economic expansion.

Tax cuts, however, are anathema to Democrat Statists who seek control of your private property. They who seek to control the size of your cars, how much energy you can consume, how much water your toilets can flush, what kind of light bulbs you can buy... anything and everything related to your privacy. Interestingly, it never ends with Democrats. They always want more control of you and your private property. Now it's your physical well-being -- socialized medicine and control of your body. And, after that, they'll want more.

Reuters reports that President Obama will raise the projected U.S. deficit to $9 trillion, consistent with the original CBO estimate and roughly equivalent to a dozen Iraq/Afghanistan wars.

The White House took heat for sticking with its $7.108 trillion forecast earlier this year after the Congressional Budget Office forecast that deficits between 2010 and 2019 would total $9.1 trillion.

"The new forecasts are based on new data that reflect how severe the economic downturn was in the late fall of last year and the winter of this year," said the administration official, who is familiar with the budget mid-session review that is slated to be released next week."

I could recite the litany of spending disasters by the Obama administration, but I won't. As Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Castro and Chavez found out, centralized planning of the economy never works.
