Google ordered to expose YouTube user viewing habits and history

A federal judge yesterday ruled that Google Inc. must turn over a YouTube logging database containing 12TB of data that includes user log-in IDs, IP addresses and video viewing habits to Viacom International Inc. The media and entertainment firm had sought the data -- recorded once a user starts to watch a YouTube -- as part of its $1 billion copyright lawsuit against Google's video unit.

However, Judge Louis Stanton of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York denied Viacom's request for access to YouTube search source code. Viacom had claimed that it needed the data "to compare the attractiveness of allegedly infringing videos with that of non-infringing videos," the order noted.

Kurt Opsahl, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted in a blog post that the ruling is "a setback to privacy rights, and will allow Viacom to see what you are watching on YouTube."

To wrap up our unit on leisure and entertainment, we tapped into a demographic group that devotes much of its time to activities in this category - college students. This demographic splits its time between classroom attendance and social events, and who doesn’t think of a keg party when they think of the college experience? We'd like to present to you our latest concept, the Kegstand.

As we began defining our concept we discussed sustainability, realizing the keg lifecycle is optimal - rent, return, refill - then rent again. So we went into the field and looked for other opportunities to improve the keg experience. We discovered that the three key areas in need of our help were transportation, maintenance, and entertainment.

Transporting a keg is sub-optimal. The weight and shape often require two strong individuals to move the keg to its party location. We added handles and wheels to our concept so that the Kegstand can easily transport a keg from the store to your backyard.

Brain scans revealed that the politically biased are virtually addicted to lying to themselves to maintain their view that their party and leaders are flawless. People of both political "sides" are equally affected by bias.

When viewing truth that doesn't suit our ideals, most of us deny it and go on as if it never happened mainly because few of us even understand the way bias affects us and makes us completely irrational.

Millions of Americans suffer from this, and nationalism bias runs even deeper. Most people think that blindly believing what our government tells us is patriotism. That is false.

Most people doubt that our leaders would ever do anything that isn't in our best interest. Most of us live in a delusional reality based on denial as a result. By definition most of us are in fact "sheeple".

All media outlets owned by 5 Mega-Corporations. CNN controlled. CBS controlled. Fox controlled. MSNBC controlled. ABC controlled. And that means your entertainment too.

She accepts without question detainee stories of widespread torture, brutal interrogation, commonplace Quran desecration and illegal confinement. But she never bothers to reference al Qaeda's "Manchester Manual," that instructs its members to allege torture and abuse as part of their defense against Western legal systems.

Besides her sympathies for the "innocent" Afghans, Kahn grew openly contemptuous of the American military men and women serving there. She describes mocking a posted "Soldier's Creed" to a guard and how she had to learn "the military's sneaky speak" - her description of terms commonly used in the detention process. She refers to one female guard repeatedly as "Rodent Face," and repeats one detainee's story about how he found the guards "androgynous" and that "we can find no sign of manhood in this army." If she was bothered by these attitudes, she doesn't mention it.

In June 2007 three detainees at Guantanamo simultaneously hanged themselves in their cells, using torn clothing fashioned into nooses. This followed on the heels of a mid-May attempt by three other detainees to ingest fatal doses of prescription medication given to and collected by their fellows and passed surreptitiously to the designated suicide candidates. The successful suicides hid their actions by convincing lenient guards to allow them to hang sheets from the ceiling to shield them for corridor lights. Yet Kahn's explanation for the suicides is that "they were killed" by U.S. captors. And she reinforces this alarming hypothesis with one family's claim that their son "would never have committed suicide."

Even when she knows she's being lied to, Kahn doesn't care.

Later she acknowledges that while she "never bought into [Taj's] goadherd story," there "was no evidence suggesting that he was al Qaeda."

"He was easy to talk to and he made me laugh . . . He was pure entertainment."

I like it when I'm right, especially about naked men. Especially about naked cowboys.

When I wrote in April that the lawsuit filed by Robert Burck "may be the end of the era of the "naked" cowboy and predicted he would be able to afford some "very nice duds," my fellow lawyers laughed at me.

One close friend -- let's call him Larry -- said as he snickered, "I read your article. You can't be serious. You really think that the Naked Cowboy is going to cash in? Well, I predict he is going to get thrown out of court. If he doesn't, maybe I will start walking around my office in my tighty whities."

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin didn't throw the cowboy from his steed. In fact, in a lengthy decision, Judge Chin ruled against the makers of M&Ms, rejecting Mars, Inc.'s attempt to dismiss the Cowboy's lawsuit. And it seems that Judge Chin has a sense of humor.

Astonishing pusillanimity

This has to be seen to believed. John Conyers asks John Yoo a simple question: "Is there anything the president could not order be done to a suspect?" He can't give a straight answer. So Conyers reduces it to a simple hypothetical: "Could the president order a suspect to be buried alive?" He still can't answer! It's a yes or no question!
